Residents who visit LA Fitnesson Dearborn Circle in Mt. Laurelwould be well advised to lock uptheir belongings after a series of theft reports this month.
Mt. Laurel Police have receivedfour theft reports from the men’slocker room of the LA Fitness ina span of 10 days from July 2through July 12. The thefts haveincluded items such as wallets, cash, credit cards, cell phones andkeys.
Lt. Stephen Riedener of the Mt.Laurel Police Department saidthe police have received seventotal reports of theft from LA Fit-

The nature of the crimesvaries. In most of the cases, thevictims left the items while theyworked out at the gym. They did-n’t notice the items were missing
until they returned. In two cases, victims had valu-
ables stolen from outside thegym. In a report on July 4, a vic-tim’s car keys were stolen from alocker. The suspect used the keysto enter the victim’s car, move itto another area of the parking lot,and steal a wallet, cell phone andcash.
One thing all of the reportshave in common is all of the vic-tims’ lockers were unsecured.Riedener said gyms are commontargets for thieves since visitorsdon’t carry valuables with themwhen they are working out.
“They’re certainly going to tryunsecured lockers first beforegoing after secured ones,” Rieden-
er said.In all of the reports from July,
the victims left their lockers un-secured. Riedener said crimessuch as the recent thefts are easi-er to prevent when gym patronsbring a lock to secure theiritems.

On July 10 at 3 p.m., an officerwas on foot patrol at a hotel onRoute 73 when he was approachedby a hotel guest. Theguest reported thatthere was an uncon-scious 17-year-old fe-male in one of therooms. The officer lo-cated the female and determinedthat she had overdosed on drugs.
Officers administered a dose of Narcan and revived the victim. She was transported to a localhospital by Mt. Laurel EMS fortreatment.
An employee of a company onGaither Drive reported that theyreceived an email that appearedto be from their company CEO di-recting them to transfer more

The Lenape Regional High School Dis-trict has built a dynasty when it comes toteaching the community about safe driv-
ing.For the third consecutive year and the
fourth time in five years, the school districtwas one of three grand prize winners inthe U Got Brains Champion Schools Com-petition. In the competition, schools from
across New Jersey create campaigns topromote safe driving. The team was hon-ored for its achievements at last Wednes-day’s LRHSD board of education meeting.
Lenape District Television students par-ticipate in the contest annually. Every year,
the team is challenged to create a video of 10 minutes or less showing how it promot-ed safe driving in their school and localcommunities.
John Donaldson, director of televisionservices for the school district, said the
challenging part of winning three years ina row is coming up with new ideas to stayahead of the competition. There were 59teams participating in this year’s competi-tion, and Donaldson said other schools em-ulate or take ideas from what Lenape has
done in the past.“We know they’re gunning for us,” he
said. “So every year we put a little more ef-fort in it.”
Lenape district drives home another winDistrict wins U Got Brains competition with its ‘Heads Up, Eyes Forward’ campaign
It’s hard to believe, but just last
week, we saw the first back-to-
school advertisement on TV. It took
us by surprise. “Oh, no,” we thought,
“did we sleep through all of July?”
Of course we didn’t; it’s just stores
trying to get ahead of the game and
boosting sales in a traditionally downmonth.
It got us thinking, though: We have
been presenting back-to-school cover-
age in The Sun for quite awhile now, in
many different towns, but how can we
make this coverage better?
Our quick answer – by being better
prepared.
So, even though the beginning of the
next school year is the last thing on
your mind here in mid-July, we’re ask-
ing that you put it at the forefront of
your brain –or at least in part of your
brain – for a few moments.
What will be different about this
school year?
We’re going to find out. Right now,
our reporters are compiling lists of
questions for school leaders about thenew school year.
Are there new classes students and
parents need to know about?
How about scheduling changes?
Was any work done at the schools
over the summer?
Generally, we’ll be asking school
leaders to tell us about things that
you – parents, taxpayers and students –
need to know before the 2015-16 school
year begins.
Then, we will pass that information
along to you.
Do you have any questions you’d like
our reporters to ask? If so, the time to
act is now. The more questions we get
from you, the better prepared we can
be, and the better information we can
pass along to you.
Maybe you are concerned about the
budget (who isn’t?). Or maybe you’ve
heard about a new program that you
think might be ideal for your child. Or
perhaps you are wondering about re-
pairs that were scheduled for your
child’s school. We’d love to get those questions from
you. Just send an email to us so that we
can include them on our lists.
Most school districts have done a lot
in recent years to be more responsive
to questions submitted by the public. It
makes sense. Everyone wants to have
great schools. Everyone wants to keep
taxes as low as possible, while still pro-
viding great service. One of the best
ways to achieve these goals is to build a
true public-private partnership be-
tween schools and the communities
they serve. And building that relation-
ship starts with effective communica-
tion.
So send us your questions. We’ll do
our best to get answers.
in our opinion
Ready for school?Of course you’re not, but there’s no better time to prepare than now
Any questions?
We are tracking down school leaders toask them questions about the upcomingschool year. So what’s on your mind? Sendus your questions, and we’ll do our best toget answers.

When it began competing inthe competition, LDTV createdthe “Heads Up, Eyes Forward”campaign. The campaign warnsmotorists against the variousdangers of distracted driving.
Last school year, the team cre-
ated t-shirts to distribute to stu-dents and staff. The front of the t-shirts included the Heads Up,Eyes Forward logo on the frontand a few examples of distracteddriving on the back.
The team also created magnetswith the campaign logo to distrib-ute to students. The studentssigned a pledge against distracteddriving and then received a mag-
net for their car. Students whohad the magnets on their car hadthe chance to win a “StudentParking Space of the Month.”
For winning the competition, the school district receives a driv-ing simulator, a computer pro-gram complete with a seat, steer-ing wheel and pedals that areused in driver’s education classes. With the Lenape district winningfor a fourth time, all four highschools now have one driving
simulator.“We’ll donate this one toSeneca, so now we’ll have one ateach of the four schools,” Donald-son said.
The Lenape district does notplan to see its streak of wins at UGot Brains end at three. Donald-son said the LDTV students arealready brainstorming new ideasto promote its “Heads Up, Eyes
Forward” campaign in new waysagain next year.
Lenape students preparedto succeed again
Last year, the school district de-buted a Prepared to Succeedvideo, where graduates from thefour high schools talked abouthow the Lenape Regional highschools best prepared them forcollege. The school district re-
leased its second Prepared to Suc-ceed video earlier this month.Superintendent Carol Birn-
bohm said the video allows thecommunity to hear about the pos-itive aspects of the school districtdirectly from the students.
“They really talk about the suc-cess and excitement they experi-enced at our schools,” shesaid.
