Study Habits
Reinforce Study Skills at Home
While your child may be able to do homework on her own now, it is unlikely that he will be able to take on
the task of studying alone. Top strategies:
1. Set up a quiet study area for your child.2. Plan a study schedule. It will keep both you and your child on track and prevent cramming the
night before a test.3. Break studying into manageable chunks. This helps him retain more information and reduces
test anxiety.4. Be flexible. You needn't limit studying only to structured study time or let the responsibility fall
exclusively on one parent.5. Read together. To ace her tests, your child will need to use higher-level thinking skills, so it helps to
emphasize these skills at home. After you read with her, discuss the material. Ask her to summarize what she read, identify new or unfamiliar words in the text, or predict what will happen next.
Responsible School Habits
● Eat breakfast every morning.● Have a set time to have your child go through his/her
binder to empty the take home section and review the assignment book.
● Be sure all study guides are returned and/or kept in your child’s binder daily.
● Be sure your child’s binder is returned to his/her backpack every night. The binder will be needed each day at school.
● Keep your child’s backpack in an easily accessible place to to return to school each day.
Binder
● Students will use a binder for organization beginning in 3rd grade. This carries over to 4th and 5th grades.
● The binder has labeled sections for all subjects, homework, and items to be removed nightly. You will find study guides and classwork in these sections. They should NOT BE REMOVED! I will help students clean out the binder at school.
● The assignment notebook (planner) should remain in the binder at all times.
