Mr. Sherpinsky
Computer Use Council Rock School District
Internet Usage
Children's Internet Privacy Act (CIPA)Requires schools to provide an internet filter
for all school district computers. Whether these computers are operated by
staff or students, the filter operates to keep out information that is deemed "inappropriate".
Practical Operations
Filter generates a list of inappropriate searches, sites, names, and IP addresses.
Beware!!! Searching in Google otherwise - comes back in this report when it triggers a word that is considered "inappropriate" by the filter software.
Practical Operations
These words are mostly characterized as relating to weapons, drugs/alcohol, suicide, pornography, obscenity, and abuse.
Every hour a filter report comes out to our IT department and is forwarded to the Principal.
Practical Operations
A Suspicious Search string would look like this on the report:
IP Address UserName Host Name Site Query String Time10.30.4.228 crsd\1000031 crsd\crn-w355 Google Heroin 1/25/11
10:32AM
Why Does it Matter?
A query appeared in December at an elementary school that read "Why do parents abuse their children".
Alone, that string may be explainable as a search for a report or assignment - but it could be a red flag to an already concerning situation with a child.
How Do You Get Access?
