Plans are Tentative Because…
Term starts in 2009; 8 months from now. Plans will probably change by next January.
President’s powers are limited; can’t make major changes without the Board of Directors’ approval
Term is short; i.e., 1 year; I would like to do many things; but, can’t do everything; must focus on a few goals
What should be these few goals???
![Page 3: Moving IEEE Ahead in 2009 – Tentative Plans](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062803/568148d7550346895db5f0ed/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
What I Would Like to Do - 1
Public Visibility, Marketing, MembershipChange the membership message to “be proud to be
a member…; identify with IEEE…, IEEE makes the world better,” instead of “Knowledge,” and “Community”)
Greatly improve student retention – develop loyalty & identification with IEEE
Reinvigorate the merchandise program, for students, especially
Expand the IEEE’s marketing efforts, including the marketing at conferences activity
Start a “Technology News,” similar to Science News
![Page 4: Moving IEEE Ahead in 2009 – Tentative Plans](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062803/568148d7550346895db5f0ed/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
What I Would Like to Do - 2Membership (continued)Many members do not identify themselves as
“engineers” (e.g., about half of Computer Society members)
IEEE and its fields of interest are multidisciplinaryFrom what fields will future growth come? “Moose” Issue: Is IEEE an “engineering”
organization? Should we welcome & recruit all who work in IEEE’s fields-of-interest? YES!
Humanitarian Activities“Presidents’ Real-World Problem-Solving
Competition” for students
![Page 5: Moving IEEE Ahead in 2009 – Tentative Plans](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062803/568148d7550346895db5f0ed/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)

What I Would Like to Do - 3Improve IEEE Establish an open access policy Develop new sources of revenues in anticipation of an OA
publishing world Make conference presentations & tutorials available on-line Continue the India initiative Create a great IEEE website to improve member
satisfaction and reduce customer service costs Start a “milestones” program for seminal papers & patents Show how the IEEE, IEEE members and the profession
make the world a better place Increase nominations & app’tmts from R8-10 (N&A comm’s) Add blog-like features to Xplore and myIEEE Write IEEE’s and the OUs’ history
![Page 7: Moving IEEE Ahead in 2009 – Tentative Plans](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062803/568148d7550346895db5f0ed/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
What I Would Like to Do - 4
Improve IEEE (continued) Start a “life sciences” activity - “What physics was to the 20th
century biology will be to the 21st” – headline, The Economist Reposition IEEE-USA as a global professional activities center Digitize IEEE Press books & make them a membership benefit Mergers, acquisitions, partnerships (leverage the IEEE’s
advantages) Collaborate more with other professional societies Use data mining of IEEE (members, authors, conf.
attendees…) Greatly improve submission-to-publication delays of our journals
![Page 8: Moving IEEE Ahead in 2009 – Tentative Plans](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062803/568148d7550346895db5f0ed/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
What I Would Like to Do - 5
• Dance more!
![Page 9: Moving IEEE Ahead in 2009 – Tentative Plans](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062803/568148d7550346895db5f0ed/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)

IEEE Conference Presentations Online
![Page 10: Moving IEEE Ahead in 2009 – Tentative Plans](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062803/568148d7550346895db5f0ed/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
IEEE Conferences
• In 2007 IEEE…– Sponsored over 850 conferences
558 financially sponsored (52% in R7-10) 350 technically cosponsored (84% in R7-10)
– In 62 countries
– Touched approximately 400,000 attendees
– >100K presentations
– Generated over $100 million in revenue
![Page 11: Moving IEEE Ahead in 2009 – Tentative Plans](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062803/568148d7550346895db5f0ed/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Access to IEEE Conferences
– Typical attendance is a few hundred
– Typical attendance in a session is several tens
– Typical cost of participation ~US$2K to $5K
Airline tickets, hotel, meals, registration fee, loss of time from work…
– Cost (in time and money) is the major barrier for many potential attendees
– Many are interested in just one session, or just a few papers at a conference; not worth the cost of attendance.
![Page 12: Moving IEEE Ahead in 2009 – Tentative Plans](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062803/568148d7550346895db5f0ed/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Goals
Make conference presentations available online, quickly, easily, cheaply and, thereby:
– Make presentations available to a worldwide audience
– Provide timely information – preferably, the same day
– Enhance the value of conferences by providing on-line access to presentations during the conference
- Allow viewing of missed papers in parallel sessions
- Allow the replaying of papers for better technical and English understanding
– Create a new source of revenues for IEEE
– Increase the value of IEEE Xplore’s contents
![Page 13: Moving IEEE Ahead in 2009 – Tentative Plans](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062803/568148d7550346895db5f0ed/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Other Uses
– Tutorials
– Workshops
– Distinguished lectures
– Business meetings, e.g.,
