Catawba County plans to testcharging non-residents a fee topark at its parks.

The Catawba County Boardof Commissioners suggested afee for out-of-county residentsvisiting the county’s parks. Thedesire is to bring income in fromthose not paying property taxes. On Monday, county staff pro-posed a $5 fee per car parked atRiverbend or Bakers Mountainparks.

“The goal of the fee would beto give citizens a sense of exclu-sivity of the use of the parks andto recoup money for those who

do not pay property taxes whouse the park,” county Budget andManagement Director JenniferMace said.

The fee would also meancounty residents would haveto show proof of residence inCatawba County, Mace said at

Monday’s board of commission-ers subcommittee meeting. Res-idents would be required to showproof of residency with a driver’slicense, a vehicle registration, abill or other documentation toreceive a county resident park-ing pass. They would be able toget the pass online or in personat the park ranger stations or thecounty’s planning office.

Non-residents would also beable to get their $5-per-day passonline or in person. There wouldalso be a $60 annual pass avail-able, Mace said.

The pass would be requiredfor Bakers Mountain Park andRiverbend Park. When Moun-tain Creek Park in Sherrills Fordopens next year, the fee couldapply there as well.

The members of the subcom-mittee — commissioners SherryButler and Kitty Barnes — ap-proved the test program. The fullboard will vote at their regular
