UNIT I
III (a)A differential manometer is used to connect two pipes A and B. The pipe A contains a liquid of Sp.
Gravity 1.1 under a pressure of 150kN/m2.The left limb of the manometer is connected to pipe A which
is1.6 meter above the pipe B. The pipe B contains oil of Sp.gravity 0.8 under a pressure of 250kN/m2
.The level of mercury in the left limb is 1.5m below level of pipe B the level of mercury in the right limb
is below to that in the left limb. Find the difference between the mercury levels. (8)
b. Differentiate between simple and differential manometers. (7)

IV (a)Distinguish the terms atmospheric pressure, gauge pressure, vacuum pressure and absolute
pressure.(8)
(b) If 5m3 of oil weighs kN, calculate its specific weight, specific volume, mass density and relative

V(a) A horizontal venturimeter is provided in a pipeline 300mm diameter carrying oil of Sp. Gravity
0.8.The throat diameter is 150mm.If the differential manometer gives a reading of 250mm of mercury
find the discharge in liters per second. Assume coefficient of discharge as 97 (8)
