Attheendofthesyllabusyouwillfindamatrixthatdetailsthelayout/contentfortheweek.OnWednesday,July6thwewillhaveabrassfocusedhalfdayandawoodwind(sax)focusedhalfday;eachdealingwiththeintricaciesandcomplexitiesofplaying,performingandunderstandingstylisticnecessitiesforthedifferentsectionsinajazzensemble.OnThursday,wewillhaveahalfdayonrhythmsectionstrategies.
ForWednesday,July6thyouwillbring:
- asaxophoneofyourchoosing(evenifitisyourprimaryinstrument)- atrumpetortrombone(evenifitisyourprimaryinstrument)
Yourpre-assignmentistoshedonthewoodwindandbrassinstrumentsyouarebringing,especiallyiftheyaresecondaryinstruments.Thiswillallowforyoutoensuretheinstrumentisingoodworkingorder(tomakesureyouhavetheproperreeds),andthatyouhaverevisitedthebasicsoftheinstrument,ifitisasecondaryinstrument.

CourseDescriptionTheJazzEducationSymposiumisanintensivegraduatelevelcourseforallmusiceducatorsseekingtointroduce,evolve,andadvanceknowledgeofteachingjazztostudentmusiciansofallages.Musiceducatorswillbeimmersedinlearningabouteffectiverehearsalandpedagogicalstrategiesforjazzensembles,improvisation,arranging,repertoireselection,andstylisticconsiderations.Additionally,studentswillbeimmersedinplayinginbigbandsandsmalljazzensemblesto
extendupontheirperformanceknowledgeandtogainunderstandingoftheinter-ensemblecomplexitiesandhowtodevelopmusicianship.Specialtopicssuchasdiscussionandpresentationofnotablejazzmusiciansaswellasliveperformancesbyprofessionaljazzartistswillbeafoundationalcomponentofthesymposium.
