The Muchelney
-
The early success of Minsterstone is owed to its innovative founder, William Hutchings, who first incorporated the business on 5 January 1920, although he had been active as a builder and undertaker since 1885. He was the pioneer in reconstructed stone and developed a system of manufacturing fireplaces, ornaments and architectural dressing that had the local gentry and nobility queuing up for his services.
The classical fireplace designs of the Minster Dillington, Haddon Hall, Chilworthy and Muchelney were first drawn up in the time of William Hutchings. These designs, so powerful yet simple in their lines, are 100 years old now and are just as sought after and just as popular as they were in William Hutchings days. They are truly architectural masterpieces.
How it all began...

Minster Fireplaces are available in 30 main designs with many variations in a theme giving approximately 90 choices of fireplaces. But you dont have to be limited by what you see in this brochure. All our designs can be customised to your particular needs, or we can make to your own particular design if you wish.
What you have as a standard is the choice of design from our range, the choice of stone and finish, whether rubbed or tooled and, where alternatives are available, a choice of size.
There are many new materials that have been developed for fireplace manufacture but none matches the resilience, the solidity, strength and sheer weight of a Minster fireplace. Your fireplace has the capacity for burning solid fuel, wood and coal, indeed was designed to do so, long before the advent of gas fires.
Of course you can benefit from installing a gas fire in a Minster but, extraordinary as it may seem, modern materials used by competitors preclude the use of coal burning fires.
Individual customisation such as a change or addition of a shelf, increased depth of recess, change of height or projection of hearth can be accommodated in most models. Your choice of fireplace will be made for you in the way you want it.
Minsterstone is delighted to present you with a wonderful collection of fireplaces displayed in a whole range of different settings...
Making Beautiful Fireplaces Since 1885

When you choose a Minster fireplace you can be confident that...
Your choice will be hand made by craftsmen who have spent an average of 25 years honing their skills so you know they have the experience and expertise to
manufacture your fireplace to an incomparable standard and finish.
The six unique processes in manufacture that have been tested over 100 years to achieve a long life and enduring style. There are Minster fireplaces still in daily use
that are over 100 years old.
You have a choice of six different limestones, each with their own individual texture and colour, to suit your dcor.
You have a choice of finish, either fine rubbed or traditional tooled finish and a wide choice of style and size, so you can pick a fireplace that will suit your tastes.

The MidelneyWhilst identical to the Muchelney design in jambs, arch and shelf, the Midelney allows the installation to fit a standard 16 or 18 fire opening. The interior recesses at a shallow angle and the fire opening mirrors the arch of the main head section.

About our fireplacesThe characteristics of stone when heated by fire
Because the flame of a solid fuel fire is hot it will eventually scorch the stone and may cause some pitting of the stone immediately around the area of the fire.
The stone inside the fire opening of open hearthed fires, at the back behind the basket, should be protected using a traditional heat plate or a fire basket with integral fire brick.
Constant use of the fire will cause some discolouration of the stone around the opening and to the underside and rear of the fire basket. Small cracks may also appear over the fire opening. These changes to the stone are not a threat to the structural strength of your fireplace and will not reduce the expected life of your fireplace.
Wooden shelves All wooden shelves made for our fireplaces are delivered in their natural state i.e not polished or stained.

The principal methods of manufacture of Minster fireplaces have not changed in 100 years. This is a traditional craft born in Ilminster in Somerset and the factory remains on the same site as the one it moved to in 1920. We are proud of our Somerset heritage and many of our fireplaces are named after beautiful Somerset villages and stately homes...
