Never really a punk rocker in the traditional sense, Almstedwas more of a roots rock wise guy more influenced by John Lennon than John Lydon. In the late'70s and early '80s, he was a big part of the burgeoning pre-Replacements/Hüsker Dü Minneapolisrock scene which, at the time, included the Suburbs, Suicide Commandos, Flamin' Ohs andHypstryz. He recorded a great debut record, Courtesy (with future Replacement Slim Dunlap onlead guitar), which brought him and indie label Twin/Tone acclaim. His last album was 1988's AScarlett Letter, with ex-NRBQ guitarist Al Anderson on board. Since 1980 he has performed anannual tribute to John Lennon on the anniversary of his death. The Twin Cities’ most explosiveoutdoor concert series is back for an eighth season with a slate of bands curated by music writerJim Walsh. Featuring legendary performers from the heyday of the Minneapolis sound, theseconcerts will riff on American music in a gorgeous riverfront setting every Thursday from July 7through August 18.
