Panel Discussion Background: The Role of Broadcasters in SA – Business as usual?Once again, the Broadcasting landscape in South Africa is changing and once again, the possibilities (and responsibilities) of the broadcasting industry seems to be malleable. The SABC is re-evaluating processes, staffing, editorial guidelines and the independents are reacting to the appearance of new platforms, making the business of broadcasting more democratic and more direct. New channels are born and putting new content on air is much easier than before. The idea of LSM’s have been put to rest, to accommodate SEMs. How do we create a common goal to keep our audiences entertained, informed, educated and empowered?
This panel would like to open a communication channel between content makers and broadcasting professionals to see whether there are issues currently at hand that need to be re-thought. Are the contractual Intellectual Property clauses still valid? How do we all re-navigate the impact of the proposed new Copyright Amendment Act? Will the fragmented audiences perspective allow us to make more feasible productions in future?

INPUT (International Public Television Screening Conference) is a a non-profit organisation of television programme makers and broadcasters, the conference is held in a different location each year to discuss and challenge the boundaries of TV in the interest of the audience. Mini-INPUTs are organised around the world to accommodate the fact that important themes, solutions and programmes which are presented at the conference should be available to all TV makers. The National Coordinators for INPUT in South Africa currently are Henriette de Villiers and François Smit. AFDA hosts the African Hub of the INPUT Conference. INPUT 2019 will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, in May 2019 hosted by Thai PBS and the Goethe Institut. The deadline for South African Programme submissions for #INPUT19 is Friday, 19 October 2018. Information on how to submit can be obtained from François ([email protected]) or Henriette ([email protected]).
