GPS TREASURE HUNT ROCK AND MINERAL IDENTIFICATION LESSON
CONSTANCE R. MILLER, 7th grade science
EVANS MIDDLE SCHOOL-OTTUMWA, IA
PURPOSE: In this lesson, the students will combine using a GPS device with rock and mineral identification.
MATRIALS NEEDED: (1) GPS unit, (2) clipboard, (3) pencil or pen (4) GPS user guide, and
5) GPS worksheet, and rock and mineral identification guide.
DIRECTIONS: Students who will be grouped in sections of groups of 2-4, depending on availability of
GPS devices will use give waypoints to find 5 different rocks and minerals. Working as a group,
The students use the waypoints given, after finding the location after using the waypoint, the students find
ock and mineral that will be at that location and identify it. Each if the 5 rock or minerals will be marked
with a white X so that it will not be confused with any other rock and minerals near the area.
Students will be advised to be courteous and to return the rock or mineral to its exact location so that
t will not be confused with other rock and minerals in the area.
Following the activity, the students will meet back in the classroom to share with the class as to where the
he rock or mineral was found, what type of rock or mineral was found, and for class discussion on the
activity.

SUPPLIES NEEDED: (1) GPS Rock and Mineral Find worksheet, (2) clipboard (3) GPS device, (4) GPS
user guide, (5) rock and mineral guide.
DIRECTIONS:
1. As a group of 2-4 members you are to use the waypoints that will be given to you to
find a rock or mineral at 5 different waypoints in Wildwood Park.
2. Use the waypoints and decide as group of the location you find is the waypoint thats given to you.
3. After agreeing as a group that you are in the correct location find the rock or mineral that is below
for each waypoint and as a group identify it according to its given name.
EXAMPLE: WAYPOINT 1-- Look for the igneous rock - (You might decide that it is
obsidian) Hint: It isnt!!!
4. After using GPS device to go to each waypoint and making the rock and mineral
identifications, using the rock and mineral guide go back to your meeting point.Please be courteous and replace the rock or mineral where it was found.
5. After the class sharing and discussion, put your worksheet in the activity tray for
your class period.
