About MME Microturbine Marine Energy
Microturbine Marine Energy
MME offers onboard microturbine power generation solutions for superyachts, replacing traditional diesel generators with an advanced yet simple technology that meets responsible yacht owners’ demands for more sustainable energy and reduced environmen-tal impact without compromise to their comfort and enjoyment of life onboard. Microturbines are compact turbine generators designed to reduce noise and vi-brations, pollutants and greenhouse gases and not least, energy costs.
Reliable power when you need it.Comfortable. Clean. Simple.
Microturbines offer combined heat and power solu-tions that ensure very low emissions levels without the need for exhaust after-treatment or a particle filtering system. The built-in, high-speed permanent magnet generator and power electronics provide reli-able power and enhanced power quality.
Microturbines have just one moving part which is supported by air bearings, so no lubricating oil is re-quired and there are no oil disposal issues. Compared with traditional generators, the maintenance require-ment is hugely reduced.

additional paralleling system is required. Also HEV micro turbines are available with 550-700VDC output for the use in DC bus applications.
Compared to a traditional diesel generator the Caps-tone micro turbine needs very little maintenance. A diesel generator needs maintenance in 250 or 500 hours intervals resulting in engineer’s time, need for consumables (lubricant & filters) and waste oil. The Capstone micro turbines only need maintenance in 8000 hours intervals and consist mainly of cleaning of the air filter.
The trend in energy supply on Superyachts moves relentlessly towards sustainable energy. A Capsto-ne® Microturbine provides an enormous reduction in NOx and CO2 emissions compared to traditional sys-tems such as diesel generators. The MME system for the installation and operation of microturbines on su-peryachts is far ahead of the market in terms of both concept and efficiency.

MME Design solutions
Currently MME is focusing on the C30 (30kW elec-trical output) and C65 (65W electrical output) units, and also the C200 (200kW), C130 (2x65kW) and C400 (2x200kW). Microturbines are scale-able which me-ans that multiple units can be applied to provide the total desired power. The micro turbines will be availa-ble as complete and modular versions.

The speed of the micro turbines is adapted to the ac-tual load demand (load following), thus a significant fuel reduction, unlike diesel generators running in constant speed (full load). Integral part of the MME solution is the Microturbine exhaust cooler with in-tegrated heat recovery functionality that can be used for heating boilers, ship heating, HVAC re-heaters or thermal chiller.
The Microturbines have exhaust temperatures of 275°C (C30), 309°C (C65) and 280°C (C200).These temperatures are reduced to 60°C by the ex-haust cooler, providing the same temperature as die-sel generator wet exhaust systems, with the added advantage that the exhaust of the Microturbine is free of soot and is virtually odorless.Superyacht power generators must be of a sufficient size to handle peak load, plus 20% security. This often results in generators running under loaded up to 80% of the time, leading to excessive wear, ingrained soot and extensive fuel consumption. In order for diesel generators to avoid these issues, load banks and soot filtering systems (exhaust after-treatment) are ins-talled, which significantly increase costs and main-tenance. Microturbines must also be of a sufficient size to handle peak load, plus 20% security, however Microturbines run according to load. This means that the turbine speed (fuel consumption) remains parallel to the electrical power consumption. Other enormous benefits afforded by Microturbines are the complete lack of vibrations, and that they do not require any servicing, lubricants or exhaust treatment. This dramatically reduces the cost of operation and installation and eliminates the need for additional platforms for the reduction of vibrations and struc-ture and air borne noise.

Heat recovery
The MME Microturbine solution includes an exhaust cooler with integrated heat re-covery that can be used for onboard heating and cooling. The exhaust cooler reduces the exhaust temperature to 60°C so, unlike traditional diesel generators, no additi-onal exhaust cooling system is needed. The microturbine exhaust is soot-free and practically odourless, and can therefore be routed directly to the topsides or funnel.
Combined heat, power and cooling applications create a high-efficiency solution.

MME DC power concept
In DC power concepts, MME Microturbine solutions are used to produce 200-700VDC output power for high-voltage DC bus and hybrid applications. In the DC power concept, the marine vessel is powered by microturbines in combi-nation with high-voltage energy storage. Multiple microtur-bines can be applied to meet the total power requirement.
MME AC power concept
In AC power concepts, MME Microturbine solutions are used to produce 400VAC/50Hz output power for AC bus ap-plications. Multiple microturbines can be applied to meet the total power requirement. The integrated power electronics provide high quality pow-er output and have integrated paralleling functionality, so no additional paralleling system is required in multiple unit applications.

Multipac Solutions - Microturbine AC energy concept
Multipac System technology enables a set-up of up to 1MW (5x200kW). The advantage of a Multipac system (Advanced Power Server) is the flexibility that it provides. Only the number of Microturbines necessary for the current load are in operation, while the others remain in stand-by mode and instantly turn ON when required (i.e. for peak loads).

The trend in energy supply on superyachts is moving un-relentingly towards sustainable energy. MME Microturbine solutions offer very considerable reductions in NOx and CO2 emissions compared with traditional systems such as diesel generators. The MME Microturbine solutions for ap-plications on board superyachts lead the market by some distance in terms of concept, comfort, emissions and effici-ency. Extensive experience gained during a full year of tes-ting has contributed to a high level of built-in optimization for MME Microturbine solutions, and will continue to do so.
