Restoring the Citizen in Digital CitizenshipOctober 15 (9:00am - 3:00pm)When we take citizenship classes in school we learn how to participate and contribute in our democratic society. When it comes to digital citizenship, though, we often focus on what students shouldn’t do and where they shouldn’t go. The greatness of the Internet, however, lies in a dedicated subpopulation that builds, maintains, and adds to the digital landscape. This class focuses on:• How we can encourage our students to be the police officers, politicians, community activists, artists, and volunteers of the digital realm and• How we can do this without shirking our responsibility to keeping them safe and secure

MATHEMATICS Mathematics Vision Project | Joleigh Honey & Travis LemonDecember 10-11 (8:30am - 3:30pm)Mathematics Vision Project (MVP) has a strong functions approach in there materials come and experience with the MVP authors rich tasks with a strong focus on functions and the progression of functions.
Big ideas about functions from a Mathematics Vision Project perspective:• Families of functions are defined by their rates of change.• Recursive forms reveal rates of change and cumulative change, are intuitive for students, and are a natural starting point for thinking about functions. • Each of the representations for functions: table, graph, equation, story context, and geometric figures offer different ways to access, understand, and communicate the ideas of functions.• A deep understanding of a function includes being able to describe its mathematical features such as x-intercepts, y-intercept, intervals of decrease and increase, end behavior, etc, from any of the representations and to connect the features to the type of function under consideration.• Procedures and definitions can be formalized based on intuitive understanding of concepts.
• Algebra may be approached from a functions perspective, motivating procedures and anchoring student thinking in the work of functions. • Understanding of functions grows and builds over time with ideas about more complex functions built upon simpler functions and combinations of functions, both composed or combined using arithmetic operations. • Functions and their inverses are important models for real-life phenomena. SCHOOL CLIMATEPositive Behavioral Interventions & Support (PBIS)“PBIS” is short for Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports. PBIS is based on principles of applied behavior analysis and the prevention approach and values of positive behavior support.
PBIS is a framework or approach for assisting school personnel in adopting and organizing evidence-based behavioral interventions into an integrated continuum that enhances academic and social behavior outcomes for all students. PBIS IS NOT a packaged curriculum, scripted intervention, or manualized strategy. PBIS IS a prevention-oriented way for school personnel to (a) organize evidence-based practices, (b) improve their implementation of those practices, and (c) maximize academic and social behavior outcomes for students. PBIS supports the success of ALL students.
In Monterey County, there are several districts implementing PBIS and experiencing positive results. If your district is interested in learning more about PBIS, please complete the PBIS survey .

Transitional Kindergarten 101- What All Administrators Need to Know About This Grade Level September 3 (2:00 - 4:00pm)In the early years, children learn through hands-on experience and benefit from many opportunities for practice. They strive to make connections between all the new ideas and information they are learning. The most successful teachers make a deliberate effort to reinforce connections by explicitly relating topics and incorporating rich themes into their lesson plans. Throughout each day, TK teachers integrate math, language and literacy development, social emotional skills and English language development. For example, teachers plan lessons that allow young children to:• Absorb new vocabulary while they explore math concepts;• Practice turn taking and cooperation while they persist through a sorting activity;• Rhyme and learn alliteration in songs and chants involving science; and• Learn new academic English through meaningful play, explicit instruction and contextualized, personalized learning.
