Societal Problem Defined
Tire blowouts cause 23,000 crashes per year, including 535 fatal accidents, 66 percent of which can be attributed to low tire pressure,
according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
The NHTSA further states that the operators of 1 out of 3 vehicles are driving with low tire pressure and are unaware of the problem.

Government Solution
• Transportation Recall Enhancement Accountability and Documentation Act (TREAD Act)
• Tire pressure monitoring – Section 13
• Monitoring phased in October 2004 to October 2007

Federal Mandates Issues
• Provisions for direct and indirect monitoring– Direct Monitoring is through sensors mounted inside the
tire– Indirect monitoring is calculated by wheel rotation rates
through the ABS system
• Mandate declared ineffective and must be rewritten for only direct monitoring
