Page Two St. Charles Borromeo Church Ascension
From the Desk of Father José…..
This Sunday we are celebrating the Ascension of our Lord Jesus. This celebration is cele-brated 40 days after Easter. It marks an important event in the life of the living Church, through the apostles—the first witnesses of the living faith. He leaves them behind to con-tinue doing the work of the Church trusting in the Holy Spirit. There are so many artistic de-pictions that remind us of Jesus ascending to heaven and the disciples looking up to heaven where He dwells.
Some years ago I was on a pilgrimage with priests from the Archdiocese, and I had the blessing of witnessing, in person, the representation of El Greco, “Ascension of Jesus.” It happens to be part of a larger mural of the Holy Trinity. It is located in Museo del Prado, Spain. What really caught my attention was the humanity of Jesus ascending to heaven. His journey was finished here, and He was ascending to the Father, but somehow the imagery of the depiction reminds me of today in our midst. There are so many figures standing on the side of the painting, and here is Jesus simply being lifted up. Even His body seems broken, weak, elongated—very Greco style. But what I love the most about that depiction is that I can always identify with the journey of being a disciple, trying to follow the will of God, and, for sure, in all the broken journey of my humanity, I still have hope to be accepted by God the Father who Jesus taught me to trust wholeheartedly. The clarity of the Holy Spirit ever present is so clear in this depiction, that it gives clarity to the journey. I loved this painting of El Greco and look forward to when I can go back and pray with it differently, after all that we have been trough during this pandemic. But just as the Father receives Jesus, so are we invited to go to the Father with our Brother Jesus and surren-der our ALL to Him. May the Holy Spirit guide us in our next chapter here at St. Charles as a parish commu-nity. We are so blest to journey together in the midst of it all. And to add extra blessing, we are more than half way done with our centennial year. We have finished our OMOFOP renewal and are looking forward to start our most new catechetical approach: being mission driven and accompanying our brothers and sisters of all ages as they come seeking the sacraments in our church. More of this pilot program is to come in the next couple of weeks. Just know we are so ready to continue the journey. Today, as we celebrate the Ascension of our Lord Jesus, I also would like to ask you to take some time to pray for the gift of gratitude for all that we have received. This coming Sunday we will be doing a livestream Mass with our parish community leaders and Archbishop Jose Gomez, celebrating our Centennial Year. The Mass will be livestreamed at 5:00pm on Sunday, May 23, 2021. I invite you to join us. What a great way to jump start our coming back as a parish community on Pentecost Sunday, where the disciples received the Holy Spirit and were given the many different gifts the community needed after the Ascension of Jesus. Some great news to share is that on Sunday, May 30th, we will resume our Sunday Masses inside our St. Charles church. The new schedule is as follows: Sunday: 8:00am, 9:30am, 11:00am (this will continue to be our livestream Mass) and the 1:00pm which will be Spanish, with a welcoming approach to our English com-munity. We will have a hybrid approach to it all. If I have learned anything this year, it is to be open to the Holy Spirit guiding us. We are almost done setting up speakers and a video connection on our Piazza San Carlo, where we will be able to host more people during our Sunday Masses, since I know not everyone feels comfortable going inside our church yet. We are aware that it is going to take some time, but we are looking forward to resuming Sunday Masses in our Church. More information to come in next week’s bulletin and via Flocknote, as we get closer. So many things seem to change so rapidly. Also please take time to look at our new Logo for our St. Charles parish community. We have been working on this Logo for the past couple of months, and finally we all agreed on this design, as it represents who we are! where we have been! and where we are going! This new Logo will be used in all our correspondence as a parish, a parish school and Holy Family Service Ministry. It celebrates our One Parish Mission. May the movement of the rays from the Cross be an active action in our lives as we bring Christ to others and receive Christ in the Eucharist. For now, let us continue praying for each other, and may Jesus our brother take our prayers and needs to our Father, who has sent His Holy Spirit to guide us.
Fraternally, Fr. José Magaña, V.F. Be at peace, God will provide

ternal love, generous - even repeated - forgiveness, and above all divine worship in prayer and the offer-ing of one's life." As parents, we want to keep our children safe from any harm. That includes harm from identity theft, which can lead to compromised credit scores and financial ruin, before your child even gets his/her first job! Take steps to minimize the risk of identity theft by setting up credit freezes on your child’s
social security number, or getting an IRS identity protection PIN that will prevent fraudulent use of your child’s identity. To learn more from the VIRTUS® article “Minors and Identity Theft,” visit

Holy Family Service Ministry
“Mary, give me your Heart: so beautiful, so pure, so immaculate; your Heart so full of love and humility that I may be able to receive Jesus in the Bread of Life and love Him as you love Him and serve Him in the distressing guise of the poor.”- St. Teresa of Calcutta
We have a new name!
Father Jose, in conversation with our ministry director, Deacon Louis Roche, has given us a new name. We are no longer the Holy Family Service Center. We are the Holy Family Service Ministry. Why? Father Jose has recognized a need for all of us in our ministries to be united as a parish, one mission, one faith, one parish. Each ministry is a part of our mission based on our faith. Our unity as a parish family working together in faith is of primary importance. Yes, we develop friendships within our ministries, but we are not a parish made of separate silos each communicating primarily within a closed circle of acquaintance. When the public sees our building as the Holy Family Service Center it is confusing. Are we part of the church across the street? Of course we are, and our name will show that we are a ministry of our church, not a separate center.
A Fun Fund-raising Challenge for Our Ministry
Along with our new name, Father Jose has issued a fund-raising challenge to benefit our ministry. Get out a jar to collect some coins. For the rest of 2021, every time you say the word “center” in connection with our ministry put a quarter in that jar, and when you come to the service center, err, ministry, or to church, bring us that money as a donation. You could write a check for your quarters, with a note in the memo: “Holy Family Service Ministry: name violations”. That will be credited for the Holy Family Service Ministry. No doubt our own volunteers will be putting in a lot of quarters for a while. This name change will take some getting used to, so let’s all have some fun with it!
What Do We Need Most Right Now? (besides quarters)
Men’s jeans in good condition, especially sizes 34-40 Canned meat, tab top cans of foods that can be meals Packages of new underwear and socks Basic toiletries New volunteers (Stop by during our operating hours for an application.)
