INTRODUCTION
This portfolio of work has been assembled to showcase design work completed during the first half of my academic tenure in the Master’s of Landscape Architecture program at North Carolina State University. First and foremost, this portfolio demonstrates my design process in abstract and as applied in a studio project. Secondly, it showcases specific technical abilities such as graphics & photography, model building, and construction documentation. Beyond these topics, this portfolio includes information about my background, skills that I am currently developing, and academic interests that I plan on developing.

This graphic abstracts my overall process for my construction studio project. While there were distinct phases of developing the design for the studio, I did not continue through each phase in a
strictly linear fashion. This allowed for a stronger integration of each phase of the design. It also allowed me to address the complexities of the site while maintaining a strong design concept.

Mock-up: Testing materials and design through fabrication. Kebony® , Steel, & Concrete.
In developing a detail for my construction studio project. I revisited some of my early conceptual ideas as well as central themes of the final design. Using digital modeling and sketching, and AutoCAD, I developed a design for a bench. To take the design one step further and to test the strength and comfort of the bench, I made a full scale mock-up of a key connection point.

Modeling, along with sketching and diagramming, is an important part of my design process. Both physical and digital modeling allow me to explore design alternatives in three dimension, generating new alternatives, and refining concepts.

ACADEMIC INITIATIVESHIFT: journal 2010 & 2011: Student-produced, peer-reviewed academic journal.
SHIFT is an effort by the students of the NCSU chapter of the ASLA to produce a peer-reviewed journal featuring the best student research, writing, and design by students from around. An ambitious goal, the first edition of SHIFT was published in the Fall of 2010.
The second edition is underway, for which I am serving as the editor. This project has taught me about project management, successfully working with others, and pulling together a quality product with limited time and budget.

As we developed our schematic designs for a seating system, we outlined values important to the design.
Conceptual Sketch
Anthropometric measurements were obtained from databases. Popliteal and lower back heights were calculated using a “Design for Mean” approach - the mean of the 50th percentile of male and female popliteal heights determined seat height. This approach made certain the design met ergonomic standards.
