Introit (Spoken Responsively—Psalm 119:81, 169-176):
P My soul faints with longing for Your salvation, but I have put
my hope in Your Word.
C May my cry come before You, O LORD; give me
understanding according to Your Word.
P May my supplication come before You; deliver me according
to Your promise.
C May my lips overflow with praise, for You teach me Your
decrees.
P May my tongue sing of Your Word, for all Your commands are
righteous.
Page 1
C May Your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen
Your precepts.
P I long for Your salvation, O LORD, and Your law is my delight.
C Let me live that I may praise You, and may Your laws
sustain me.
P I have strayed like a lost sheep. Seek Your servant, for I have
not forgotten Your commands.
C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy
Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be
forever. Amen.
P My soul faints with longing for Your salvation, but I have put
my hope in Your Word.
Kyrie and Gloria in Excelsis ............................................... Page 204
Salutation and Collect of the Day (Prayed in Unison):
C Blessed Lord, You have caused all Holy Scriptures to be
written for our learning. Grant that we may so hear them,
read, mark, learn, and take them to heart that, by patience
and comfort of Your holy Word, we may embrace and ever
hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus
Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You
and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Old Testament Reading........................................ Jeremiah 23:16-32 In contrast to the lies of the false prophets, the true Word of God is
symbolized by three figures of speech: grain, because it spiritually feeds
and nourishes, unlike the false prophecies which are only straw; fire,
because it sears away all pretense and hypocrisy; and a hammer,
because it smashes all false teachings with the divine truth.
This is what the LORD Almighty says:
“Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you;
they fill you with false hopes.
They speak visions from their own minds,
not from the mouth of the LORD.
They keep saying to those who despise Me,
‘The LORD says: You will have peace.’
And to all who follow the stubbornness of their hearts
they say, ‘No harm will come to you.’
Page 2
But which of them has stood in the council of the LORD
to see or to hear His Word?
Who has listened and heard His Word?
See, the storm of the LORD
will burst out in wrath,
a whirlwind swirling down
on the heads of the wicked.
The anger of the LORD will not turn back
until He fully accomplishes
the purposes of His heart.
In days to come
you will understand it clearly.
I did not send these prophets,
yet they have run with their message;
I did not speak to them,
yet they have prophesied.
But if they had stood in My council,
they would have proclaimed My words to
My people
and would have turned them from their evil ways
and from their evil deeds.
“Am I only a God nearby,”
declares the LORD,
“and not a God far away?
Can anyone hide in secret places
so that I cannot see him?”
declares the LORD.
“Do not I fill heaven and earth?”
declares the LORD.
“I have heard what the prophets say who prophesy lies in My name. They
say, ‘I had a dream! I had a dream!’ How long will this continue in the hearts of
these lying prophets, who prophesy the delusions of their own minds? They
think the dreams they tell one another will make My people forget My name,
just as their fathers forgot My name through Baal worship. Let the prophet who
has a dream tell his dream, but let the one who has My Word speak it faithfully.
For what has straw to do with grain?” declares the LORD. “Is not My Word like
fire,” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?
“Therefore,” declares the LORD, “I am against the prophets who steal from
one another words supposedly from Me. Yes,” declares the LORD, “I am against
the prophets who wag their own tongues and yet declare, ‘The LORD declares.’
Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams,” declares the LORD.
“They tell them and lead My people astray with their reckless lies, yet I did not
send or appoint them. They do not benefit these people in the least,” declares the
LORD.

C Thanks be to God.
Gradual (Spoken Responsively—John 8:31-32, 2 Timothy 3:16-17):
P If you continue in My Word, you are truly My disciples, and
you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.
C All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is useful
for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in
righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly
equipped for every good work.
Epistle Reading ..................................................... Ephesians 1:3-14 Today we begin a series of eight Epistle Readings from
Ephesians. Paul introduces his letter by recounting the blessings
we have received through the Father (verse 3), the Son (verses
4-13a), and the Holy Spirit (verses 13b-14). The cause of our
predestination and salvation—and indeed every blessing we
receive—is found “in Christ,” since His meritorious act of
redemption is the sole reason for the bestowal of divine blessing.
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed
us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For He chose
us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight.
In love He predestined us to be adopted as His sons through Jesus Christ, in
accordance with His pleasure and will—to the praise of His glorious grace,
which He has freely given us in the One He loves. In Him we have redemption
through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of
God’s grace that He lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. And He
made known to us the mystery of His will according to His good pleasure,
which He purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times will have
reached their fulfillment—to bring all things in heaven and on earth together
under one head, even Christ.
In Him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan
of Him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of His will, in
order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of His
glory. And you also were included in Christ when you heard the Word of truth,
the Gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in Him with a
seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance
until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of His
glory.

P The Holy Gospel according to St. ______ , the ______ chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.
Holy Gospel .............................................................. Mark 12:18-27 The Sadducees denied all supernatural occurrences including
resurrection. Their question on resurrection, therefore, was not to elicit
information but to find a way to make Jesus look foolish by presenting an
extreme hypothetical case. Jesus responds that although there will be no
marriage in the resurrection, there certainly will be a resurrection.
Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him with a
question. “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies
and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and have
children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers. The first one married
and died without leaving any children. The second one married the widow, but
he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third. In fact, none of the
seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too. At the resurrection
whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”
Jesus replied, “Is not this the reason you are in error, because you do not
know the Scriptures or the power of God? When the dead rise, they will neither
marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. Now
about the dead rising—have you not read in the book of Moses, in the account of
the bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and
the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are
badly mistaken!”
After the reading:

with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

TODAY’S WORSHIP — The Lord Brings His People from
Death to Life by the Preaching of His Word. The Lord Jesus
causes fear and trembling and division among His enemies because
His Word is “like fire … and like a hammer that breaks the rock in
pieces” (Jeremiah 23:29). His Law puts us all to death, whereas
only His Gospel can bring us to life. He has fulfilled that Word for
us by His cross and in His resurrection from the dead. Christians
therefore live as “sons of God, being children of the resurrection”
(Luke 20:36), for the Lord our God “is not God of the dead, but of
the living” (Mark 12:27). “Those who say there is no resurrection”
(Mark 12:18) neither know the Scriptures nor the power of God,
but the baptized faithful know “that the dead are raised” (Mark
12:25). For Christ is the destruction of death itself and “before the
foundation of the world,” and even now by faith, “the God and
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” has blessed us in Christ “with
every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 1:3-4).
Through Baptism into Christ, you also “were sealed with the
promised Holy Spirit,” for life and salvation (Ephesians 1:13).
