Our professionally accredited three-yearMathematics BSc Honours degree provides afirm foundation in the ideas and techniques ofmodern mathematics.
All our degrees focus on three core areas - puremathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics – and youhave the flexibility to tailor the combination of these to suityour interests.
On this degree, you will select mostly mathematics modulesin the later stages. These include:
• introduction to vector calculus• methods for solving differential equations• algebra and linear algebra
You can also choose optional modules linked to theresearch expertise of our staff and learn about the latestdevelopments in the discipline, such as advancedhydrodynamics, quantum mechanics, and Bayesianinference.
Highlights of this degreeQuality and ranking• 11th in the UK for research – Research Excellence
Framework 2014• 91% overall student satisfaction score – National
Student Survey 2019
Professional accreditation*Our degrees are accredited by the Institute of Mathematicsand its Applications (IMA).
IMA accreditation means our degrees meet, in part, theeducational requirements for the Chartered Mathematician(CMath) designation, with some additional study orexperience required.
*All professional accreditations are reviewed regularly bytheir professional body.
Build your knowledge with core modulesAll of our mathematics and statistics degrees follow acommon core of modules at Stages 1 and 2, to equip youwith the key skills and knowledge that all mathematiciansand statisticians need. You study topics such as:
• applied mathematics and statistics• vector calculus• differential equations• fluid dynamics• algebra• linear algebra
• complex variable• statistical inference• Bayesian inference• stochastic modelling• mathematical computing
This provides you with a solid foundation on which to buildmore specialist knowledge later in your degree. It alsomakes transfer between degrees relatively easy. There isalso flexibility (mainly at Stage 1) to choose topics from otherareas of the University, for example:
• accounting• music• a foreign language• another science
Explore our research expertiseTeaching at Newcastle is research-informed, meaning you'lllearn from staff actively engaged in research in appliedmathematics, pure mathematics and statistics.
Their research feeds into the modules available for you tostudy, especially at later Stages. So you'll graduate withknowledge of the latest theories in mathematics andstatistics.
Your choice of cutting edge modules includes:
• fluid mechanics• advanced hydrodynamics• group theory• applied probability, focusing on stochastic financial
modelling• stochastic systems biology, focusing on understanding
genetic networks and cellular systems
Boost your employability with a work placementApply to spend 9 to 12 months on an optional workplacement between Stages 2 and 3. You can apply tospend your placement year with any organisation and willreceive University support to do so.
You’ll gain first-hand experience of working in the sector, putting your learning into practice and developing yourprofessional expertise.
It will extend your degree by a year and is subject toavailability.
Find out more about Work Placements.
BSc or MMath? We offer our degrees at two levels:
• three-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) degrees• four-year Master of Mathematics (MMath) or Master of
Mathematics and Statistics (MMathStat) degrees
Our four-year degrees are more in-depth and include:
• advanced topics and a wider choice of modules• a specialist study, tailored to your own interests,
that develops your skills in research and communication• more technical skills, for those who wish to enhance
their employability or proceed to postgraduate study
Take a virtual tour at www.ncl.ac.uk/tour 3
Transfer between the two levels is possible up until themiddle of Stage 3.
To qualify for Stages 3 and 4 of the MMath/MMathStatdegree, you must normally have obtained at least anupper-second-class average mark in Stages 2 and 3.

Careers
Mathematics careersMathematicians and statisticians have always been highlyvalued by employers for their analytical and problem-solvingskills, and their ability to think logically and quantitatively.
As well as developing these skills, our degrees also equipyou with the key skills which are essential for theemployment market such as communication, teamwork, planning, and organisation.
There are some careers for which a degree in mathematicsis usually required, for example, teaching mathematics, statistical work, actuarial work, some research anddevelopment, and some areas of computing.
Mathematics graduates are also strong candidates insectors such as:
• management consultancy• finance• accountancy• information technology• logistics• transportation
Industry too is always looking out for specialists with aninterest in the applications of mathematics to engineering.
A degree in mathematics and statistics can also lead on tofurther study including PhD, MSc and PGCE courses. Inshort, mathematics graduates can be found in a very widecross-section of careers, and in both the private and publicsectors.
Approximately 50% of graduate jobs advertised in the UK donot specify any particular degree subject. Many employersare more interested in the skills and personal qualities youhave acquired at university than in the degree course youhave studied.
The University has very good links with employers. Manycompanies visit the University to give presentations, attendjob fairs and carry out interviews, and some of them arespecifically targeting mathematicians. Examples of some ofthe well-known companies that our recent graduates havefound employment with include:
• Ernst and Young• NHS• Atkins• the Army• Newcastle City Council• Network Rail• National Audit Office• Aon• Santander• KPMG• Irwin Mitchell LLP
