itallstartedabouteightyearsago.aphonecallfromhldevoreaboutacertainredpaintedShields#18,named“challenger”(howappropriateinretrospect)waslookingforahome.eighteenhadbeenoneoftheinstitutionalboatsfromMaineMaritimeacademyandhadmanyscars.paint;liberallyappliedinavarietyofshades,finallyendinginred.therewasnomast,noboom;justahullwiththeseats,floorboardsandatonoforiginal1960shardwarestillboltedtothedeck.fastforwardeightyears—ireceivedwordthatnationalsweregoingtobeinoysterBay,ny,hostedbymyhomeclub,Seawanhakacorinthianyachtclub.itwastimetopickupwhereileftoff.westartedoffbysandingthehullandthendiscoveredthatmanysmallgelcoatblistersrosetothesurface,andnowthewholehullwascoveredinpinholeblisters.

DAy TWO • SEPTEMBER 22headingtothedock,oneoftheterrificsponsors,BMw,wasonhandwithfriendlyfaces,finemotorcarsandfreewaterforthecompetitors.Muchappreciated!adelayedharborstartkeepsthefleetatthedockuntil10:45a.m.wheretheapwaslowered.thefleetsailingoutinalightnortheasterly(adirectionwhichisneverharbingerforbreeze)andpredictably,thewindfaded…andsobeganthewait.thefleetluxuriatedinsunshineandwarmthformuchoftheday.around3:45p.m.,alighteasterlyworkeditswaytowardsthefleet.withsuchadirewindforecast,thercwascompelledtotryandgetaracein.throughouttheirpreparationsthewindheldsteadyandthefleetgotoffcleanly.unfortunately,halfwayupthelegarightshiftputalltheboatsontheleftinanunenvi-ableposition.thebreezemaintainedasoutherlydirectionandraceonewascompletedaswasracingfortheday.charlieShoemakerfinishedfirstwiththeBurnham/Baerteaminsec-ondandBillBerryinthird.

DAy 3 • SEPTEMBER 23thenationalswereruninlessthanperfectconditionsthatrangedfromlightdrifting,typicaloflongislandSound,togusty15knots.inbetweentherewereperiodsofdownpourstorivalthemidsummerdelugesofcoastallouisiana,withvisibilitydroppingtolessthan50yardsatonepoint(theloose-footedmainsailwillsurelybeappreciated.Seetechnicalcommit-teenotes).asthebreezeandraincameandwent,thewinddirectionswungbackandforthasmuchas90degrees,chal-lengingtheracecommitteeintheireffortstosetacourse.thesecondracebeganinafresh12knotsoutherly,butthebreezelightenedthroughout.thedawson/frisselduo(254)werefirst,managingthechallengingconditionsaswell,asdidlarchmontlocal,fredwerblow(25),whotookthesecondspot.BillBerry(239)securedanotherthird.

EPILOGUEitshouldbenotedthathadthercnotpushedtogetinasec-ondraceondaytwo,wewouldnothavesailedthefourracesrequiredforanationalchampionship.thelongraceformatofachampionshipeventrequiresthateachracehaveaminimumofsixlegswitheachlegatleast1.25mileslong−arequire-mentthatcanbedifficulttofulfillinconditionssuchasthosein

thisyear’snationals.conversely,itisalsointerestingtonotethatdespitebigshiftsduringseveraloftheraces,whenonemightexpectoneortwooftheleadersintheeventtotankaracebybeingonthewrongsideofthecoursewhenashifthit,thebestinthefleetalmostalwaysrosetothetop.

ourviewisthattheseboatswerefastandwereabletomakebacksometimedeficitswithsuperiorboatspeed.alongcourseallowsmoretimeforthedifferenceinspeedtoovercomeshorttermadvantagesgainedinshiftyconditions.thetopfinishershadallbeentherebefore,andwillbeagainnodoubt.thankstoBurnham/reedfortheirinformativearticle(Speedcorner,pg12),whichnodoubtwillhelpallShieldssailors.

itwasindeedapleasurehostingthisyear’schampionshipevent.thedepth,commitmentandenthusiasmoftheeventcommitteemadeforahugelysuccessfulandenjoyableregatta.

likelyechothiscomment.wewerebothinthetopfiveatthefirstweathermarkineveryrace,andthewindhadusuallyshiftedatthatpoint,leavingrelativelyfewpassinglanesthereafter.

regardingspeed,whatwe’velearnedmorethananythingisit’simportanttokeepexperimenting.whenyoufindagoodsetting,thatdoesn’tmeanit’sforever.wheneverwethinkthat,somebodyalwaysstartsgoingbyus.Beparanoidaboutboatspeed;neverstoplookingformore.

ourbasicset-upstartswithmaximumrake.ifyouhaveyettodothis,talktoyoursailmakerandfleetmeasurerandgetitdone–maststepinmaxforwardlegalposition,aftedgeofpartnersatmaxaftposition.wethinkthisisthesinglemosteffectivechangeyoucanmaketogetuptospeedacrossarangeofconditions,althoughitmaynotbeasimportantinlightair.

inlightair,weconsistentlytensiontheuppersat800poundsandthelowersat300.wehavetriedlesstensiononthelowers,butwehaven’tfoundthatitprovidesanybenefit.headstaylengthduringthenationalswas48.5inchestothedatum.wehaveaSpinlockcalibratedturnbuckleontheheadstay,whichwegenerallyadjustwithinarangeofacentimeterorless,butweconsideredthisourmaxlengthposi-tionandleftittherethroughouttheregatta.

Jiblufftensiononournew-this-seasonQuantumjibwaseaseduntilwesawsmallscallopsbetweenhanks.wecarryourjibtackprettyhigh(setontwoshacklesplusafewloopsofSpectrainbetween),soperhapsonly50percentofthefootsweepsthedeck.Sinceweraisedthetackafewyearsago,wecarryourjibleadsfartheraft,andthebackedgeofourjibcaris1to2inchesaftofthe“t”wherethetwojibtracksmeet.wefoundthatwiththeheadstaysagwewerecarryingforthelastcoupleraces,inverylightair,thewholejibmigratedaft,andweneededtomovetheleadfartherafttomatch.oncewehadalittlemorewindandcouldsnugupthebackstay,ithadtheeffectofpullingthejibforwardandopeninguptheleech,whichmeantwecouldmovetheleadforwardagain.

itwouldbehardtomakeanykindofprecisestatementaboutourleechtensions,butwemadeaseriousefforttomaintaintwistinoursailswheneverwecould.timhealy,thesailmakerfromQuantum,wherewehaveboughtourwhitesailsfrominrecentyears,wassailingaboard John Dory,#217.heobservedthatwewerecarry-ingourleechesmoreopenthananumberofotherboats,andhethoughtthathadhelpedusfindsomeextrajuice.allweknowforsureisthatourjibleadswereslightlyaftofwhereweoftensetthemintheflatterwaterofnarragansettBay.

ultimately,itcamedowntosheettension,andweconsciouslysailedwithsheetsmoreeasedthanusual.wewereprettyslowattimesintheextremechopatthe2010nationalsatMasonsislandayearago,sothisyearweweredeterminedtoalwaysbefast,ifpossible,beforewetriedtopoint.

SurelyallofthecrewsontheleadboatshavereplayedthatlegafewtimesintheirmindssinceSeptemberanden-visionedadifferentresult.wewerefortunatetogettheresultweneededtowintheregatta,butwhatmadeushappiestatthetimewasthatwewereabletosettleinagainst#160toweatherand#245and#239toleeward,matchspeeds,andfinallyedgeaheadneartheendoftheleg.

Beginningin2007,membersofindianharboryachtclubconduct-edanextensiveanalysisofwhatfellowmemberswantedinaonedesignclass,andwelookedatawiderangeofboats.thekeyattri-butesmemberssoughtinaboat-astrongclassassociation,nearbyfleets,reasonablecostandfreedomfromthehasslesofdrysailing–areallmetbytheShieldsandnootheronedesignboatinourarea.thenextstepsweretogetthosewithinterestoutforatestsailandfollowupwithopenhousestoprovidemoreinformation,andtheopportunitytospeakwiththefolksfromcapecodShipbuildingandnorthSails.thefinalelementforsuccess-localfleetsforsupportandtoaddressconcernsthatwewouldn’tbe“lonerangers”-wascoveredbyfleets1and5whicharewithin5milesofcaptain’sharbor,andtheywereextremelysupportiveofoureffortstogetShieldsfleet2launched.

welookedatutilizationofclub–ownedideal18sasanexampleanddeterminedthatwith5membersperboatavailabilitywouldnotbeanissue,andonheavilysubscribedracedaysall5memberscouldsailtogetherononeShields.akeyelementofthevalueproposi-tioniscost–acompetitiveShieldsthatdoesn’tneedalotofworkcanbeacquiredforabout$20,000.addinrefurbishment,anewsailandfixedcostssuchaspurchasingamooringwasestimatedtoadd$7,500foratotalof$27,500allinoraveryreasonable$5,500pershare.theabilitytosellsharestoothermembersorbacktothesyndicateensuresliquidity,andacomprehensivesetofBy-lawsweredraftedwiththegoalofestablishingproceduresupfrontforawiderangeofeventsandoutcomes.establishingthecaptain’sharboronedesignfleetassociationasa503c7non–profitwaspainlessthankstolegalzoom,andwedevelopedadetailedoperatingbudgetfromwhichquarterlysyndi-cateduesweredetermined.therobustnatureoftheShieldsandabsenceofseveralthousanddollarsofexpensiveharkenhardwaretofinetuneeverycontrolontheboatmeantwecouldkeepdueslowat$1,750permember,peryear.thisincludesretainingapro-fessionaltocommission/decommissiontheboatsandhandlemajormaintenance.

wefinisheduptheyearonoctober9withourlastdayoffallsailing.takingtophonorsinourfallSerieswasedcassidywithintrepid#98,followedbythedayton/SlaughterteamonBlackpearl#73andJohnShannahaninthirdplaceonoldpaint#71.

asforhighpointfortheseason,tophonorswenttoJaydaytonandrichardSlaughteronBlackpearl,JohnShannahaninsecondplaceandedcassidyinthirdplaceoverallfortheseason.ourhighpointwasscoredonatotalof33raceswhichwereracedduringourthreeShieldsSeries:spring,summerandfalland,inadditiontothethreeseries,wealsoincludedtworegattassponsoredbytaycduringthesummer,theoxfordregatta(the80thannual)andalsotheheritageregatta.
