Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 28, 2019

A song written by John Denver “Take Me Home, Country Roads” was with me last week (and it still sounds in my ears). I spent this time in Appalachia in the beautiful countryside of West Virginia. This was my first experience as part of the Youth Ministry project so I must admit I was a little bit nervous during the week preceding the day of my departure. I was asking Fr. George and Fr. Przemek what it is all about; what we would do there; what should I take; and would two suitcases of clothes be enough… So my brother priests told me all about the Appalachia project. Also we went shopping with Fr. George to get work stuff and as days passed by I felt more comfortable about going to Rowlesburg in Preston County, WV. And when I saw the Veterans of Foreign Wars building (our Appalachia home) with 20 boxes of cereals I knew I would be good! After Sunday dinner, at the organizational meeting, we were told all about the time which we were going to spend in West Virginia and our project of “helping others to help themselves”. Every morning I said Mass asking God to bless our day and our work. After breakfast, we headed to our jobs. The task for my team was to build a bedroom for a disabled person. It was a great time of work, fun and learning new things. Thanks to the CEO of our team, Mr. Drew; Ms. Michelle, teenagers from our parish and myself learned some carpentry skills. We learned how to use a saw, a nail gun and a screw driver. Moreover, I learned what fractions are! During our work break we went for lunch and we were able to find some good spots in the area. At 6.30 p.m. we had dinner and after that we prayed, met together learning something new about ourselves. We gave nicknames to each other, we talked about our hobbies and plans for the future. I was even able to play basketball with teens and taught them some Polish! At the end of the week each one of us shared what the Appalachia week taught us and then we were served dinner by the local Church members as an appreciation for our work. After experiencing the Appalachia trip I must say it is a great project of our Parish. For me it was a time of work, fun, prayer, living among the beautiful hills of West Virginia, but mostly it was a lesson of putting into action the most important commandment of our faith – loving God and our neighbor. I saw people who are less fortunate than me and it brought great happiness to help them and to make their lives a little bit better. I met fantastic, joyful adults and teens who sacrificed their time and vacation to help others. This time in Appalachia was for me, a young priest, an experience which strengthened my faith and improved my thoughtfulness for others. And I hope I will be back on the Appalachian roads again. It is a must do thing!

May God bless you, Fr. Chris

Stewardship

The Our Father truly is the ultimate steward’s prayer. In it, we call upon God in an intimate way, as Father. We ask that His will be done (not ours!) and that His kingdom come (not ours!). In other words, we remember that He is our Creator, everything is His, and our focus in life should be on His priorities, not our own. Then we ask Him to supply our needs (to give our daily bread), forgive our sins, and protect us from evil. That is, we proclaim our complete trust in His provision for us and mercy towards us. We, too, commit to extending mercy ourselves (as we forgive those who sin against us). As we pray the words of the Our Father, we recognize this basic truth about ourselves and God: God is our Father and we are beloved and infinitely blessed to be His children. This is the basis of a stewardship way of life.

Stewardship Opportunity for Families: Parent and Child Lectors

Serving as a liturgical minister is a special way to share your gifts! We are recruiting new Parent and Child Lector Teams for the Fall. This is a beautiful way to participate even more fully in the Mass each week and to spend time as a family reviewing the upcoming readings. The Parent/Child Team proclaim the Readings at the 9 AM Sunday Liturgy. Children should be in the 4th to 8th Grades. A short training is required and materials are available to the family for review before reading. Families are scheduled once every 2 months or so. For more information, please contact Jeanne Buckley at [email protected]. (Teens interested in being Lectors can also contact Jeanne Buckley.)

A Family Perspective

Today's gospel guarantees if we "ask" we will "receive," perhaps not what we wanted but what our Heavenly Father knows is best for us His children. All the love we have for our children, God has for us and more. As our children trust us, we must trust "Our Father."

Page 9: Mass Intentions Sacraments · 7/28/2019  · Mass Intentions SATURDAY, JULY 27 5:00 pm Peter, Regina & Patty O'Brien, Nicholas Nazad, Diane Drago, Jim Dirlam, Elvira Bledt 7:00 pm
