The Pirate’s Spyglass
It’s difficult to believe we have only one quarter left and our students will be on
summer break. As the year winds down, please make note of the upcoming
activities under “Important Dates” and plan accordingly. We have EQTs after the
Memorial Day holiday so please do not plan a vacation until the students are
finished with the last one on the 31st at 9:00 a.m.
National Junior Honor Society Inductions
Sixth and seventh graders will be inducted into the
Phillips Preparatory School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society
on Tuesday, March 20.
Excessive Messages to Students
We are receiving an excessive number of calls from parents throughout the day with transportation requests
to pass on to students. I am pleading with you to take care of transportation matters before the student
reports to school. Classes are being interrupted too frequently and this interferes with classroom
instruction and student learning. Please make a conscious effort to arrange transportation with your child
before school.
Thank you for being such A-W-E-S-O-M-E parents!!!

Overall Middle School Winner for Mobile County: Sarah Bowman
Congratulations to the following people that placed at the Mobile County Science Fair:
Almost half the awards given at the county science fair went to Phillips students and 15 of the 18 students who attended won awards. Additionally, half of the students who placed in the high school division, including the overall high school winner, were former Phillips students. Good job students and thanks to the teachers for all their hard work!!! Again, congratulations to these students and to all of our students who represented PPS at the Mobile County Science Fair. Good luck to them as they travel to the University of South Alabama on March 30th to go head to head in competition with students from all over southwest Alabama.

The following students made the Alabama All-State Band:
David Matranga, Bari Sax
Taylor Hall, Trombone
Anna Wood, Clarinet
Carlos Wilson, Snare Alternate
These students worked very hard for this audition and had to perform three prepared pieces, twelve major scales & arpeggios from memory, two minor scales and arpeggios also
from memory, and a sight-reading piece. They will now participate in the Alabama All-State Festival, which is being held April 12-14 (Thursday through Saturday). We are very proud of these students and wish them the best of luck!
Advanced Band
The advanced band students will be participating in the Music Performance Assessment (MPA), formerly known as state contest on Thursday, March 8th at Saraland High School. The students have been working each day after school from 2:45-4:30 since returning from Christmas break and we are looking forward to their performance. They will be performing for band students, directors, administrators, and supervisory personnel from Washington, Baldwin, Mobile, Clark, Choctaw, and Wilcox counties.
We wish them luck as this is the biggest performance of their middle school band experience!

Alexandra Jenkins, student at Phillips Preparatory
School, was recognized Thursday, March 1, 2012, by
the AT&T Alabama Pioneers, employees and retirees
dedicated to community service. AT&T Alabama Pio-
neers encouraged middle school students across the
state to interview and capture history in the personal
stories of a senior citizen from the state of Alabama.
Select stories were chosen and included in the book,
Reflection: Book of Alabama Stories –An Alabama Time Capsule. Included in the book is the interview of Mary
Ann Bond Bedgood by Alexandra Jenkins. Alexandra,
Mary Ann Bond Bedgood and the Phillips Preparatory
School Library were presented with a complimentary
copy of the book.
