Patterns may be as simple as plain blocks/bricks of regular or irregular lengths laid as strip
flooring. But today Parquet is laid in a herringbone, basket-weave or brick pattern along with a
border of single or double block/brick, or a clean effect with no border.
The chosen pattern is what makes Parquet an art and a skill only a select few craftsmen
posses as they lay down Parquet in a geometrical pattern.

Wood Finishes
Lacquered Surface
The surface of the board has been pre-treated with either an
acrylic, UV or ceramic lacquer. This is a relatively hard smooth
surface coating. It can have between 5 and 10 layers of lacquer
applied, depending on the range of products, making it a very
hard wearing and durable surface. A lacquered surface is
normally smooth with either a dull matt sheen or a shiny gloss
appearance.
Natural Oiled Surface
The application of natural oil to a floor deepens the natural colour
of the wood. It brings out the natural beauty of the grain and
soaks right into the wood. Once the floor has been laid it is
advisable to treat the surface immediately with a top coat of hard-
wax oil so as to give it a protective layer. The beauty of using
natural oils is that if the floor becomes scratched or bruised the
damaged area can easily be touched in by applying another coat
of hard-wax oil.
Brush Matt Lacquered
The surface of the board has been brushed to remove the soft
fibres from the grain leaving a textured surface. The Matt
lacquered surface gives the same impression as an oiled floor but
has the added benefits of the reduced maintenance required from
a lacquered floor.
Lacquer sits on the surface of the timber after the soft grain has
been brushed out of the board
Hard-wax Oiled
As explained above, this has the same characteristics as natural
oil, but it doesn't sink into the surface quite as much, staying more
on the surface due to the greater viscosity of the wax. This floor can
easily be touched in and when buffed restores itself to its original
condition.
The oil soaks into the surface of the board, but the wax surface sits
on the top creating a protective layer with a dull sheen

Block Flooring Explained
Real wood engineered: These floors offer
added stability and a greater variety of
design. They are normally constructed in 3
layers, using the chosen species as a top wear
layer, with a central core of either softwood*, high density
fibreboard (HDF) with a balancing spruce veneer, or birch
plywood. Our range of Engineered Woods have a top wear
layer can from 3mm to 6mm depending on the product.
Solid wood: Each board Is made from a single piece of timber, usually with a
tongue and groove joint, on the ends as well as the long sides.
We normally recommend that all of these floors are fitted by
an experienced parquet floor layer. Wood is a natural product and
is susceptible to dimensional changes due to moisture and humidity –
each installation needs to be professionally assessed and the floor acclimatised
before installation commences. Solid Wood Floors gives you the assurance of a solid
structure with an air of quality that enhances any home adding value to your property along with
ease of maintenance.
Wood Flooring Cuts - The angle at which a board is cut makes
big differences in how the finished product looks. Wood flooring
is either plain-sawn, quarter-sawn or rift-sawn.
Plain-sawn is the most common cut. The board contains more
variation than the other two cuts because figure patterns resulting
from the growth rings are more conspicuous. Quarter-sawing
produces less board feet per log than plain-sawing and is
therefore more of a premium.
Quarter-sawn wood twists and cups less and wears
more evenly. Rift-sawn is similar to quarter-sawn, but the cut is
made at a slightly different angle.
Engineered Wood Floors offers you more options when compared to Solid Wood Flooring
when installing Wood Flooring it demanding environments, offering you a sound
structure and long wear, delivering great value for money without compromise
on quality.
Maples & Birch engineered block comes in thicknesses of 14mm thick
with a selected 3mm top hardwood layer, this top hardwood surface is
sufficiently thick to take up to 5 or 7 sanding’s and information from all
manufacturers claims that it is usually 10-12 years between sanding’s in
a normal domestic conditions.
The structure is made up using layers of quality birch and hevea softwood as a core to provide
the stiffening and weight, making this the ideal Real wood floor to be used with under-floor
heating or in a Conservatory.

Installation and Suitability
Glue down:
This type of installation is where the wooden floor is stuck
directly to a concrete subfloor using a special adhesive,
which remains flexible indefinitely while still having
immense bonding strength. This enables the wood to
expand and contract without damaging the structure of the
timber. When a wood floor is stuck down a liquid damp
proof membrane is required which is formulated to work
with the adhesive for added strength.
Secret Nailing:
This type of installation is the wooden planks are nailed using
cleats into the tongue of the new floor board at 45°, into either a
suitable sized existing wood (pine or ply) board subfloor or on to
battens. Never use non-kiln dried battens as this can lead to
cupping or warping of the floor due to excess moisture in the
battens. When installing a floor in a ground floor area then the use
of a special membrane is required
Floating:
The new floor is fitted over an underlay without being fixed
to the subfloor. This is ideal when there is a question as to
excess moisture in the subfloor. A polythene damp proof
membrane can be used to isolate the wood floor from any
moisture beneath it. This method also provides a slight
cushioned feel to the floor.

Information Q&A
People are often confused as to how a room should be measured for installation of real wood
flooring, so please use this easy to follow guide on how to measure a room. These instructions are
supplied as a general guide to help you.
To eliminate doubt on room floor measurements just sketch the room and write down the
measurements as per our examples, use metric measurements when measuring it really is that
simple.
Use a tape measure and measure the room from one wall to the
opposite wall make a note of the distance). Now measure the
distance of the opposing walls to each other and make a note of
this on your sketch.
Measure both walls, the width and the length, write down the
measurements i.e.: width = 3.15 metres or 315 cm and the length
4.85metres or 485 cms. To calculate the area just multiply width x
length Area = 3.15 x 4.85 = 15.3m2 and add an additional 10% for
wastage.
The most common room is the rectangle, usually with one door and
perhaps 1 or 2 windows, this shape accounts for nearly all rooms in
one way or another. The two basic dimensions are the width, usually the shorter of the walls, and
the length. When measuring it is easy to make a mistake, and when calculating an area this
mistake is compounded. So always remember Measure Twice.
When measuring the room, if it is an unusual shape with for example bay windows the overall
room flooring area measurements must still be taken. But do take the measurements of the
irregular shape i.e. the bay window from the widest points of the width and length.

How to measure
Your floor?
Standard Room
1. Identify the two widest areas (a =width b = length)
2. Measure and note between the two identified
areas
3. Multiply the two sizes 4.35 x 5.25 = 22.83m2
4 Total meterage required = 22.83m2
L Shaped Room
1. Divide room into two rectangular sections
2. Take the four sizes and multiply as below
3. 2.33 x 5.25 = 12.23m2 and 1.75 x 4.25 = 7.43m2
4. Add the two sizes together
5. 12.23 + 7.43 = 19.76m2
6. Total metres required 19.76m2
Complex Shaped Room/Hallway
1. Divide room into three rectangular sections
2. Take all sizes and multiply them as below...
3. 1.10 x 1.75 = 1.925m2
4. 1.10 x 1.75 = 1.925m2
5. 5.00 x 1.00 = 5.00m2
6. Add the three sizes together
7. 1.925 + 1.925 + 5.00 = 8.85m2
6. Total metres required 8.85m2
NOTE: Don’t forget to allow an additional 5-10% for wastage

Flooring Accessories
We have the widest range of wood floor accessories through our exclusive partnership with
'Wooden Floor Accessories' who offer the widest range of quality wood flooring accessories and
installation materials available from leading suppliers and branded manufacturers.
Oil Maintenance
Failure to care for any oiled or hard-waxed wood floor on a regular basis can
prove to be costly and as such end with a big for floor refurbishment/renovation.
Floor Cleaning As with oiled floors it is just as imperative to care for lacquered finished wood floors and
laminate wood floors and to do so is easy but only with the use of the right cleaning
products. Most care products available from your average supermarket tend to contain
waxes and chemicals that could damage the lacquer or finish.
Threshold Profiles Also known as T-Bars, Ramp Bar, Wood to Carpet, Square Edge and Stair which are
available in a choice of wood species or finishes like Oak, Merbau, Walnut, Maple,
Beech, Kempas, Cherry, Ash, Iroko, Red Oak and Antique Oak. All our profiles are
carefully selected and beautifully machined, our range of floor and door trims have all you
need to ensure a really professional looking finish to your wood floors and doors.
Underlay For the installation of engineered and laminate wood flooring and different insulation
types we stock a variety of underlays within our wide range for every type of installation.
The correct selection of underlay to the type of wood floor and sub-floor is very important
and that's why we only stock products that are sourced by quality and features, our range
is wide enough to cover all types of installation.
Wax Oils We carry the widest range of Hardwax Oils Oil finishes which provides a ‘comfortable’,
natural looking surface through a blend of hardening natural oils and waxes. It makes the
surface water and dirt repellent and is designed for the surface treatment of untreated
hardwood and other types of wooden floors exposed to normal or heavy wear.
Lacquers & Seals Lacquers and Floor Seal for wood floors enhances the natural wood grain while
protecting against dirt and moisture ingress and can be used on most types of wood
floors. By focusing on quality we only offer branded Lacquer and Seal.
Adhesives, Liquid & Damp Proof Membranes There are many manufacturers and the quality of these products vary considerably, we
sell only the best adhesives as used by the professional wood floor fitters., for a floated
wood floor the use of a quality PVA adhesive is essential. Damp Proof Membrane as
the name suggests, a liquid chemical that is applied to a clean, sound and flat concrete
sub floor to prepare it to take a either a fully glued down floor installation or a floated floor
and will drastically slow down the evaporation of moisture from wood screed.
Do Solid wood floors increase the value of your home? Solid wood floors, just like ceramics are recognised as a high quality building material. They are long lasting and completely
renewable with very little effort. Aside from these benefits solid wood floors are fashionable, minimalist and above all, desirable
which means that they increase the value of your home.
Can I have a wood floor on top of under floor heating? Yes and because of their stability, engineered floors are recommended.
Can I have a wood floor in the conservatory? Yes, engineered floors are best suited to conservatories because of their stability.
Can you fit solid wood onto concrete?
If you are laying the solid wood flooring over a concrete subfloor then you will need to check the latter’s moisture levels
beforehand. It should be less than 4%. If it is not then use a barrier to help prevent moisture affecting the solid wood
Can I have a wood floor in the kitchen and which one? Yes a wooden floor in a kitchen is just fine! You can use both solid and engineered.
Can I have a wood floor in the bathroom and, if so, which one? We do not recommend hardwood flooring of any type in a bathroom.
Do I need to acclimatise my floor before it is fitted?
Engineered floors don’t need to acclimatise and in fact once a pack is opened the floor must be fitted. A solid floor will need a
minimum of two weeks to acclimatise.
I am worried about my neighbours, can I have wood floor in the flat?
Yes you can have wooden floors in your flat, but remember to use an approved acoustic underlay and opt for Engineered
wood.
How do I keep my floor clean? New hardwood floors need very little looking after. Regular sweeping and / or vacuuming will keep the floor free of surface dirt.
Good mats inside and outside all entrances will keep shoes free of grit and dirt. It is a combination of surface dirt and dirt on
shoes that damages the lacquer on your new floor. A floor can be mopped using mild floor soap with a well rung out mop as
required.
Can I fit solid wood straight onto joists? As with any other sub floor, joists or battens must be level to within plus or minus 3mm over a two–metre span. The distances
between the joists or battens will determine the amount of fixings that can be used (you can only nail where there is a joist).
Solid floors must be fixed every 250mm – 300mm and 20mm engineered floors every 400mm. Most houses in the UK have
joists that are 16 inches or 400mm apart. If you are fixing a hardwood floor to battens on top of an existing concrete or screed
subfloor, the concrete/screed must comply with the conditions laid above.
How is a solid floor fitted using the glue down method? Glue downs are installed by trowel spreading of adhesive on the subfloor in a pre determined area. Usually professionals will
measure out three feet or enough for twelve rows to cover, using a three inch wide board as an example. Each and every
individual board is placed one at a time into the adhesive until the glued area is covered. Once completed, another area is
marked and laid.
Why do I need a damp proof membrane when laying on top of concrete? Timber is a hydroscopic material which means in layman terms that timber will shrink or expand to suit it surroundings. The
movement isn’t linear but warping motion as it depends on the growth rings to how a board moves. To avoid extreme
movement you need to lay DPM over the concrete, it is like a plastic sheet, on that would be a foam layer of 50mm minimum.
This will help towards any damp problems.
How long will my floor last? With the right care and attention, a quality hardwood floor will last for hundreds of years.
We have tried to help you answer these questions and guide you through
these pages, so you can certainly find the floor that suits your tastes and
creates that special feeling and atmosphere that will be unique to your home
and individual to reflect your style.

Proper use of vacuuming,
sweeping, and damp mopping is
usually all that is required to
maintain the cleanliness and
appearance of a wood floor.
Oil soaps should not be used to
clean the floors.
The best suggestion is to use the
manufacturers recommended
cleaning products.
Like all floors, excessive grit and
foot traffic will affect appearance.
Unlike carpet or rugs, a properly
finished wood floor, does not
accumulate hidden soil or odorous
compounds.
