17
Importance of Cleaning
Maintenance different than other pavements.
• Owner’s responsibility.
• Keep permeability close to design.
• Ensures longevity of system.
![Page 18: Maintenance Guidelines for Pervious Concrete · Importance of Cleaning • Pervious concrete pavement can still function with no cleaning • Will work better if sand, dirt, leaves](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022011911/5f941a0d19cc1d6f4a0b766d/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
18
Importance of Cleaning
• Pervious concrete pavement can still function with no cleaning
• Will work better if sand, dirt, leaves and other debris are removed
•Before Cleaning
•After Cleaning
![Page 19: Maintenance Guidelines for Pervious Concrete · Importance of Cleaning • Pervious concrete pavement can still function with no cleaning • Will work better if sand, dirt, leaves](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022011911/5f941a0d19cc1d6f4a0b766d/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)

20
Frequency of Cleaning
• Depends on amount of sediment
• Inspect pavement regularly
• Observe drainage during a storm event
• Trash, leaves or paper, may degrade into small particles and migrate into the voids
![Page 21: Maintenance Guidelines for Pervious Concrete · Importance of Cleaning • Pervious concrete pavement can still function with no cleaning • Will work better if sand, dirt, leaves](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022011911/5f941a0d19cc1d6f4a0b766d/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)

22
Three Levels of Maintenance
• Routine Maintenance
• Periodic Maintenance
• Deep Cleaning/Unclogging
![Page 23: Maintenance Guidelines for Pervious Concrete · Importance of Cleaning • Pervious concrete pavement can still function with no cleaning • Will work better if sand, dirt, leaves](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022011911/5f941a0d19cc1d6f4a0b766d/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
23
Routine Maintenance
• Visual Inspection
• Leaf blowing or vacuuming
• Can reduce infiltration of materials into pavement
![Page 24: Maintenance Guidelines for Pervious Concrete · Importance of Cleaning • Pervious concrete pavement can still function with no cleaning • Will work better if sand, dirt, leaves](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022011911/5f941a0d19cc1d6f4a0b766d/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
24
Periodic Maintenance
• Water flushing removes debris
• Dislodged sediment vacuumed
![Page 25: Maintenance Guidelines for Pervious Concrete · Importance of Cleaning • Pervious concrete pavement can still function with no cleaning • Will work better if sand, dirt, leaves](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022011911/5f941a0d19cc1d6f4a0b766d/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
25
Deep Cleaning/Unclogging
![Page 26: Maintenance Guidelines for Pervious Concrete · Importance of Cleaning • Pervious concrete pavement can still function with no cleaning • Will work better if sand, dirt, leaves](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022011911/5f941a0d19cc1d6f4a0b766d/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
26
Deep Cleaning/Unclogging
• Regenerative Vacuum Sweeper
• Pressure Wash/Vacuum
• Stop cleaning if damage to surface is observed
![Page 27: Maintenance Guidelines for Pervious Concrete · Importance of Cleaning • Pervious concrete pavement can still function with no cleaning • Will work better if sand, dirt, leaves](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022011911/5f941a0d19cc1d6f4a0b766d/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
27
Moss Control
![Page 28: Maintenance Guidelines for Pervious Concrete · Importance of Cleaning • Pervious concrete pavement can still function with no cleaning • Will work better if sand, dirt, leaves](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022011911/5f941a0d19cc1d6f4a0b766d/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
28
Moss Control
• Add 10 to 30 oz of baking soda to five gallons of warm water (64F or higher). Spray on surface at 100 to 120 sf per gallon.
• Mix 5 pounds of hydrated lime with five gallons of water. Spray onto surface.
• Mix solution of 10 to 20 percent household bleach and water and spray on surface.
![Page 29: Maintenance Guidelines for Pervious Concrete · Importance of Cleaning • Pervious concrete pavement can still function with no cleaning • Will work better if sand, dirt, leaves](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022011911/5f941a0d19cc1d6f4a0b766d/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
29
Please note…
• Sweeping pervious may be ineffective
• Small sediment gets trapped in coarse surface
• Do not sweep or flush from impervious areas onto pervious areas
• Use cleaning chemicals with EXTREME caution.
• Periodically check permeability
![Page 30: Maintenance Guidelines for Pervious Concrete · Importance of Cleaning • Pervious concrete pavement can still function with no cleaning • Will work better if sand, dirt, leaves](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022011911/5f941a0d19cc1d6f4a0b766d/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)

32
Testing Permeability
• Perform ASTM C1701 once curing is completed

34
Freeze-Thaw Resistance
• Depends on saturation level
• Avoid critical saturation– Design
• Infiltration System • Secret of success is to provide the water a place to go
– Maintenance• Cleaning, as needed, in severe climates
