MAGLEV
Faster than a speeding bullet!

What is Magnetic Levitation?
• trains float over a guide-way using the basic principles of magnets to replace the old steel wheel and track trains.
• maglev trains do not have an engine • Instead of using fossil fuels, the
magnetic field created by the electrified coils in the guide-way walls and the track, combine to propel the train.

The magnets are repeatedly turned on in front of the train and turned off behind the train as it passes a point.
Supports in the track simply “guide” the train’s wheels as it moves along.

History of MagLev• 1934 - On August 14, Hermann Kemper
of Germany receives a patent for the magnetic levitation of trains.
• 1965 - Maglev development in the U.S. began as a result of the High-Speed Ground Transportation (HSGT) Act of 1965.
• 1966 - In the USA, James Powell and Gordon Danby propose the first practical system for magnetically levitated transport, using superconducting magnets located on moving vehicles.

History of MagLev• 1977 - April, Miyazaki, Japan 7 km. maglev
test track was opened.• 1984 - a small train was unveiled in
Birmingham, England. It was used to ferry people between the town's airport and the city's main train station.
• 2001 - In China, a contract is concluded between the city of Shanghai and the industrial consortium consisting of Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Transrapid International to realize the Shanghai airport link.
