DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
T:-:is attractive one and a half story frar:ie church stands at the heart of the Sugarland cor:u~uni ty, at the junction of the Sugarland Lane and Sugarland Road (at the southeast corner). Behind it (west) is the community center and a smaller building now used as a meeting hall for the church and community.
The church faces east, and its gable roof line runs east-west. Tne facade is three bays in width, and the building is four bays in depth. The front door is flanked by large windows with double hung sashes having two over two panes. The tops of all windows are rounded. Today the facade has a projecting vestibule, but it is an added feature. Above the front door is a small circular window, a decorative feature. A short bell tower with a pyri:rriJ'dal roof was built on the pea~c of the roof and still has its old bell. The eaves are boxed and carry short returns. The entire structure rests on cut sandstone nined from the Seneca quarry.
Behind the c;rnrch is the co:::J.TJ.r:.i ty ce:1.ter, which stands o~: t::e site of the first cl1v.rcl:, accordinc; to Tilghnan Lee. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Thi_s churc1.1 stands O'.: nronert'r ";)Urc?lased j_n 1871 and is one of the first tracts purc!'.:.ased by tl:e Black farc1ilies who founded t~rn Susarland c?~?:-mni ty. iz1i_s illustr£i:tes the high value that they placed upod~church. This deed (EBP 9/74) also declares that a school could be built on this site; either in the church building itself or separately. Thus the church and the school were the two principal institutions of the early community.
This deed of 1871 lists ·Jilliam ':laylor, :?atric~i;: Hebron, and John H. Diggs as Trustees for this I:ethodist ~iscopal Church. Tney were therefore the patriarchs of t'ie connunity and their ~10uses, wh~_c:~ :1ave bee:1 described by 'l"il[)l:-.:an Lee, have "Jee::-i recorded in t::is survey. A picture of Patricli;:: Hebron has been copied.. Interestingly, this tract was sold again in 1891 back to an enlarged set of Trustees for the churcl1 : '.'Iilliam Taylor, '.'Jashington I~errey (sic), Patrick Hebron, Fenton Taylor, Samuel Lee, John Adams, LeWis r.: .. Garnett (Deed JA 19/25).. This deed says that the church was called "Taylor's Chapel", probably after ':Jilliam Taylor, just as Warren M.E. Church was named after one of its 'I'rustees, Isaac '/iarren ..
According to ?ilghman Lee, the carpenter Scott Bell from Poolesville constructed the pres~nt church. His grandson Raymond Bell still lives in Poolesville and could be a valuable informant for future oral interviews.. Lee also says that none of the old church records have survived and does not li;::now of any photographs of the church of its congregation. .Further interviews beyond the limited scope of this prelieinary survey should be conducted to identify and record more materials related to the history of this old church, ber,un in 1871, before those r:aterials are lost.
