The nervous system is made up of the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system.
Multiple Sclerosis
Definition :Multiple sclerosis or MS is a disease that affects
the brain and spinal cord, resulting in loss of
muscle control, vision, balance, and sensation
With MS, the nerves of the brain and spinal cord
are damaged by one's own immune system.
Thus, the condition is called an autoimmune
disease.
CAUSESNo one is sure what causes the body's immune system to go awry in multiple
sclerosis. Some scientists believe that it is a combination of genetics and something in the
environment to which the person was exposed to early in life.
Myelin can be compared to the insulation on electrical wires. When myelin is damaged, the messages that travel along that nerve may be
slowed or blocked.
Signs and symptoms:
1. Partial or complete loss of central vision, usually in one
eye, often with pain during eye movement (optic neuritis)
2. Double vision or blurring of vision
3. Tingling or pain in parts of your body
4. Electric-shock sensations that occur with certain head
movements
5. Tremor, lack of coordination or unsteady gait
6. Slurred speech
7. Fatigue: you may feel tired even after a good night’s
sleep
8. DizzinessDiplopia
Complications:
LoL, What’s my name ?
• Muscle stiffness or spasms
• Paralysis, most typically in the legs
• Mental changes, such as forgetfulness or
difficulties concentrating
• Depression
• Epilepsy
• Difficulty swallowing
• Difficulty thinking
Prognosis: The average life expectancy is 30 years from onset, which is 5 to 10 years lower than that of unaffected people. Almost 40% of people with MS reach the seventh decade of life
