in arnese da caccia.
NORMANNO, CORO 1:2 Percorrete le spiagge vicine, Percorriamo

Lo domanda... lo impone lonor.
Fia che splenda il terribile vero

(il Coro parte rapidamente) Part One
1:1 Overture
The departure
Scene 1
Hall in the castle of Ravenswood.
Normanno and a chorus of castle dwellers in hunting costume
NORMANNO, CHORUS 1:2 Cover the nearby sands
of the vast ruins of the tower.
Let the veil over such a dark mystery fall away .
Honour demands, decrees it.
Let the dreadful truth shine
Like lightening amidst clouds of horror.
The chorus leaves quickly
SCENA II
(Enrico savanza fieramente accigliato, Raimondo lo segue mesto e silenzioso. Breve pausa)
NORMANNO 1:3 Tu sei turbato!
(accostandosi rispettosamente ad Enrico)
ENRICO E nho ben donde. Il sai:
Del mio destin si ottenebr la stella...
Intanto Edgardo... quel mortal nemico
Di mia prosapia, dalle sue rovine
Erge la fronte baldanzosa e ride!
Sola una mano raffermar mi puote
Nel vacillante mio poter...
Lucia osa respinger quella mano!...
Ah! suora non m colei!
RAIMONDO (in tuono di chi cerca di calmare laltrui collera)
Dolente Vergin,
che geme sullurna recente di cara madre,
al tal amo potria volger lo sguardo?
Ah! rispettiam quel core
Che per troppo dolor non sente amore.
NORMANNO Non sente amor! Lucia damore avvampa.
ENRICO Che favelli?...
RAIMONDO (Oh detto!)
NORMANNO Mudite. Ella sen ga col, del parco
Nel solingo vial dove la madre
Giace sepolta: la sua fida Alisa
Era al suo fianco... Impetuoso toro
Ecco su lor savventa...
Prive dogni soccorso,
Pende sovresse inevitabil morte!...
Quando per laere sibilar si sente
Un colpo, e al suol repente
Cade la belva.
ENRICO E chi vibr quel colpo? Scene 2
Enrico comes forward frowning haughtily,
Raimondo follows him sadly and silently - short pause
NORMANNO1:3 You are troubled!
approaching Enrico respectfully
ENRICO I have good reason to be. You know it.
The star of my fate has so darkened.
Meanwhile Edgardo, that mortal enemy
of my lineage, from his ruin
Raises his bold head and laughs!
Only one hand can strengthen
my wavering power.
Lucia dares to reject that hand!
Ah! she is no sister of mine!
RAIMONDO in a conciliatory tone, trying to calm the other's anger
Could the sorrowful maid,
who weeps by the recent grave of her dear mother,
Turn her gaze on earthly love?
Ah Let us respect that heart which cannot feel love
Through excess of grief.
NORMANNO Not feel love! Lucia burns with love.
ENRICO What are you saying?
RAIMONDO (Oh, those words!)
NORMANNO Listen to me. She wandered there, down the park's
lonely path where her mother
lies buried: her faithful Alisa
Was by her side. Lo, a wild bull
charged them.
Without any help,
Inevitable death hung over them!
Then a shot could be heard whistling
Through the air and suddenly
brought the wild beast to the ground.
ENRICO And who fired that shot?
ENRICO Lucia forse?...
NORMANNO Lam.
ENRICO Dunque il rivide?
NORMANNO Ogni alba.
ENRICO E dove?
NORMANNO In quel viale.
ENRICO Io fremo!
N tu scovristi il seduttor?...
NORMANNO Sospetto Io nho soltanto.
ENRICO Ah! parla.
NORMANNO tuo nemico.
RAIMONDO (Oh ciel!...)
NORMANNO Tu lo detesti.
ENRICO Esser potrebbe!... Edgardo?
RAIMONDO Ah!...
NORMANNO Lo dicesti. NORMANNO One whose name has been veiled.
ENRICO And Lucia?
NORMANNO Loves him.
ENRICO When did she see him again?
NORMANNO Every dawn.
ENRICO And were?
NORMANNO By that path.
ENRICO I tremble! Haven't you found out
who the seducer is?
NORMANNO I have only a suspicion
ENRICO Ah, speak!
NORMANNO It is your enemy.
RAIMONDO (Oh Heavens!)
NORMANNO You detest him.
ENRICO Could it be Edgardo?
RAIMONDO Ah!
NORMANNO You said it.
ENRICO 1:4 Cruda... funesta smania
Tu mhai destata in petto!...
troppo, troppo orribile
Questo fatal sospetto!
Mi fe gelare e fremere!...
Mi drizza in fronte il crin!
Colma di tanto obbrobrio
Chi suora mia nascea!
Pria che damor s perfido
(con terribile impulso di sdegno)
A me svelarti rea,
Se ti colpisse un fulmine,
Fora men rio destin.
SCENA III
Coro di cacciatori, e detti.
CORO (accorrendo) (a Normanno)
1:5 Il tuo dubbio ormai certezza.
NORMANNO (ad Enrico)
Odi tu?
ENRICO Narrate.
RAIMONDO (Oh giorno!) ENRICO 1:4 A cruel, deadly clamour
have you awakened in my breast!
It is too, too horrible
This fatal suspicion!
My blood freezes and I tremble!
My hair stands on end!
Overwhelmed with such abomination
Which my sister awakens!
Rather than your guilt of such a treacherous love
with a terrible start of anger
Should be revealed to me
It would be a less terrible fate
If you were struck by lightening
NORMANNO For the sake of your honour I was cruel to you!
RAIMONDO I implore your mercy. Refute him, O heaven
Scene 3
Chorus of huntsmen
CHORUS running up to Normanno
1:5 Your doubt is now a certainty
NORMANNO
to Enrico
Do you hear?
ENRICO Tell me.
RAIMONDO Oh what a day!
CORO 1:6 Come vinti da stanchezza
Dopo lungo errar dintorno,
Noi posammo della torre
Nel vestibulo cadente:
Ecco tosto lo trascorre
Un uom pallido e tacente.
Quando appresso ei n venuto
Ravvisiam lo sconosciuto.
Ei su celere destriero
Sinvol dal nostro sguardo...
Ci fe noto un falconiero.
Il suo nome
ENRICO E quale?
CORO Edgardo.
ENRICO Egli!... Oh rabbia che maccendi,
Contenerti un cuor non pu!
RAIMONDO Ah! non credere...ah! sospendi...
Ella... Modi... CHORUS 1:6 When we were overcome by weariness
After long wanderings
We rested in the castle
In the crumbling hall.
Behold, soon a pale, silent man
Passed by it.
When he had come close
We recognised the stranger.
He, on a swift horse
hid from our gaze
A falconer told us
His name
ENRICO And what was it?
CHORUS Edgardo
ENRICO He! Oh No heart could contain
the fury that burns in me,
RAIMONDO Ah dont' believe it, ah! wait a bit..
She... Listen to me.
ENRICO Udir non vo.
1:7 La pietade in suo favore
Miti sensi invan ti detta...
Se mi parli di vendetta
Solo intender ti potr.
Sciagurati!... il mio furore
Gi su voi tremendo rugge...
Lempia fiamma che vi strugge
Io col sangue spegner.
NORMANNO, CORO Quellindegno al nuovo albore
Lira tua fuggir non pu.
RAIMONDO (Ahi! qual nembo di terrore
Questa casa circond!)
(Enrico parte: tutti lo seguono.) ENRICO I don't want to listen
1:7 Pity for her
Inspires you to mild feelings in vain.
Only if you speak to me of vengeance
Will I be able to hear you -
Villains! My fury
Already rages terribly against you.
The traitorous flame which consumes you
I will extinguished with blood
NORMANNO, CHORUS That unworthy one at dawn
will not be able to escape your fury.
RAIMONDO Ah! What a cloud of terror surrounded
this house!
Enrico leaves: all follow him
SCENA IV
1:8 Introduzione
Parco.
folle ardir.
LUCIA Ben parli! Edgardo sappia
Qual ne minaccia orribile periglio...
ALISA Perch dintorno il ciglio
Volgi atterrita?
LUCIA Quella fonte mai
Senza tremar non veggo...
Ah! tu lo sai.
Un Ravenswood, ardendo
Di geloso furor, lamata donna
Col trafisse: linfelice cadde
Nellonda, ed ivi rimanea sepolta...
Mapparve lombra sua...
ALISA Che intendo!... Scene 4
1:8 introduction
A park. in the background one side of the castle with a little stage doorIn the foreground, the so called Siren fountain,
The other side of the fountain was once covered with a pretty edifice decorated with gothic friezes, .Only the debris of this edifice surrounds it. The roof is fallen in and the walls destroyed, and the fount, which jets up, makes its way through the stones, and the debris around it forming a stream - it is just getting dark. The moon is rising.
Lucia and Alisa
LUCIA coming from the castle, followed by Alisa: both: both are deeply troubled. She looks around as if seeming someone but seeing the fountain turns her gaze away
1:9 Still not here!...
ALISA Careless girl! What have you brought me to!
To venture here, now that your brother came here
It is foolish boldness.
LUCIA Well said! Edgardo must know
That horrible danger threatens him.
ALISA Why do you gaze around
So fearfully
LUCIA I never see this fountain
without trembling.
Ah! You know it.
A Ravenswood, burning
With jealous fury, stabbed his lover there.
The poor creature fell into the water,
And there she remains buried.
Her shadow appeared to me.
ALISA What do I hear!
LUCIA Ascolta.
1:10 Regnava nel silenzio
Alta la notte e bruna...
Colpa la fonte un pallido
Raggio di tetra luna...
Quando sommesso un gemito
Fra laure udir si fe,
Ed ecco su quel margine
Lombra mostrarsi a me!
Qual di chi parla muoversi
Il labbro suo vedea,
E con la mano esanime
Chiamarmi a s parea.
Stette un momento immobile
Poi rapida sgombr,
E londa pria s limpida,
Di sangue rosseggi!
ALISA Chiari, oh ciel! ben chiari e tristi
Nel tuo dir presagi intendo!
Ah! Lucia, Lucia desisti
Da un amor cos tremendo. LUCIA Listen
1:10 The night, far gone and dark
reigned in silence
The fountain was struck by the pale ray
Of a dismal moon
when a low groan was heard.
In the breeze,
And behold on that side,
The shade showed itself to me!
Her lips were seen to move
Like one who is speaking
And with a lifeless hand
She seemed to call me to her.
She stood motionless for a moment
then swiftly disappeared
The water, previously so dark
Became red with blood!
ALISA Clear, Oh Heavens, very clear and sad
is the meaning of your prediction!
Ah Lucia, Lucia desist
from such a terrible love.
LUCIA Io?... che parli!
Al cor che geme
Questo affetto sola speme...
Senza Edgardo non potrei
Un istante respirar...
1:11 Egli luce a giorni miei,
E conforto al mio penar
Quando rapito in estasi
Del pi cocente amore,
Col favellar del core
Mi giura eterna fe;
Gli affanni miei dimentico,
Gioia diviene il pianto...
Parmi che a lui daccanto
Si schiuda il ciel per me!
ALISA Giorni damaro pianto
Si apprestano per te!
Egli savanza...
La vicina soglia io cauta veglier.
(Rientra nel Castello.) LUCIA I? What are you saying!
To this mourning heart
This love is the only hope.
Without Edgardo I could not
Breathe for an instant
1:11 He is the light of my days,
And the comfort of my pain.
When delighted in the ecstasy
of the most scorching love,
With the language of the heart he swears
eternal faithfulness to me
I forget my troubles
And my tears become tears of joy.
When I am next to him
It seems that heaven opens for me!
ALISA
Days of bitter tears for you
Draw closer!
He's coming.
I alone will carefully keep watch around us.
Goes back into the castle
SCENA V
EDGARDO 1:12 Lucia, perdona
Se ad ora inusitata
Io vederti chiedea: ragion possente
A ci mi trasse.
Pria che in ciel biancheggi
Lalba novella, dalle patrie sponde
Lungi sar.
LUCIA Che dici!...
EDGARDO Pe Franchi lidi amici
Sciolgo le vele: ivi trattar m dato
Le sorti della Scozia. Il mio congiunto,
Athol, riparator di mie sciagure,
A tanto onor minnalza.
LUCIA E me nel pianto abbandoni cos!
LUCIA Che ascolto!... Ah! no... rimanga nel silenzio avvolto
Per or larcano affetto... Scene 5
EDGARDO 1:12 Lucia, forgive me
if at an unaccustomed hour
I ask to see you: a strong reason
causes me to do it.
Before the new dawn brightens
in the sky, I will be
Far from the shores of my home.
LUCIA What are you saying!
EDGARDO I set my sails for friendly French shores
There it has been granted to me
to treaty the fate of Scotland. My relation
Athol, helper in times of troubleRaised me to this honour.
LUCIA And you leave me thus in tears
EDGARDO Rather than leave you
I would see Asthon.. I will offer him my hand
in peace, and will request
your right hand as a pledge of our peace.
LUCIA What do I hear! Ah no! Keep our secret love
wrapped in silence for now.
EDGARDO (con amarezza)
Intendo! Di mia stirpe
Il reo persecutore
Ancor pago non !
Mi tolse il padre... Il mio retaggio avito
Con trame inique musurp...
N basta? Che brama ancor? che chiede
Quel cor feroce e rio?
La mia perdita intera, il sangue mio?
Ei mi abborre...
LUCIA Ah! no...
EDGARDO Mi abborre...
(con pi forza)
LUCIA Calma, oh ciel! quellira estrema.
EDGARDO Fiamma ardente in sen mi scorre! Modi.
LUCIA Edgardo!... EDGARDO bitterly
I understand! The guilty persecutor
Of my lineage
Still isn't satiated!
He took my father from me. My birthright
he usurped with iniquitous plots.
Isn't that enough? What more does he want?
What does that false, angry heart desire?
My complete perdition, my blood?
He abhors me.
LUCIA Ah no!
EDGARDO Abhors me
more forcefully
LUCIA Calm, oh Heavens that extreme anger.
EDGARDO An ardent flame flows through my breast! Listen.
LUCIA Edgardo
EDGARDO Modi, e trema.
1:13 Sulla tomba che rinserra Il tradito genitore,
Al tuo sangue eterna guerra
Io giurai nel mio furore:
Ma ti vidi...in cor mi nacque
Altro affetto, e lira tacque...
Pur quel voto non infranto...
Io potrei compirlo ancor!
LUCIA Deh! ti placa...deh! ti frena...
Pu tradirne un solo accento!
Non ti basta la mia pena?
Vuoi chio mora di spavento?
Ceda, ceda ognaltro affetto;
Solo amor tinfiammi il petto...
Ah! il pi nobile, il pi santo
De tuoi voti un puro amor!
EDGARDO (con subita risoluzione)
Qui, di sposa eterna fede
Qui mi giura, al cielo innante.
Dio ci ascolta, Dio ci vede...
Tempio, ed ara un core amante;
EDGARDO Listen to me and tremble
1:13 On the tomb which encloses my betrayed father,
I swore eternal war against your blood
In my fury.
But I saw youin my heart another love
was born, and the anger was silent.
Yet that vow is not broken.
I could still fulfil it.
LUCIA Heavens! Calm down. Alas! Control yourself.
One word can betray you!
Is my grief not enough for you?
Do you want me to die of terror?
Give up, give up every other passion
Let love alone inflame your breast.
Ah! the most noble, most holy
of your vows is a pure love!
EDGARDO with sudden resolution
Here swear to me to be my faithful wife forever
Swear it before Heaven
God hears us, God sees.
Temple and altar are a loving heart
My fate is united to yours.
puts a ring on Lucia's finger
I am your spouse.
In the times in which this event takes place, there was in Scotland a common belief that the breaker of an oath made with certain ceremonies will be made an example of by Heaven while on earth, almost like the law of perjury. For this reason, then the oaths of the lovers, far from being regarded as trivial, have at least as much importance as a marriage contract. The most common of these ceremonies was that the two lovers should break and divide a coin between them. This is in place of a ring, as is more adaptable to the stage.
A miei voti amore invoco.
EDGARDO A miei voti invoco il ciel.
LUCIA, EDGARDO Porr fine al nostro foco
Sol di morte il freddo gel...
EDGARDO Separarci omai conviene.
LUCIA Oh parola a me funesta!
Il mio cor con te ne viene.
EDGARDO Il mio cor con te qui resta.
LUCIA Ah! talor del tuo pensiero
Venga un foglio messaggiero,
E la vita fuggitiva
Di speranza nudrir.
EDGARDO Io di te memoria viva
Sempre o cara, serber. LUCIA And I yours.
Handing in her turn, her own ring to Edgardo
I call upon love to witness my vows.
EDGARDO I call Heaven to witness my vows
LUCIA, EDGARDO Only the frozen cold of death
Will be able to put an end to our fire.
EDGARDO For now it is necessary to separate.
LUCIA Oh what sad words to me!
My heart goes with you.
EDGARDO My heart remains here with you.
LUCIA Ah, let your thoughts sometimes
come in a letter,
And I will nourish this fuggitive life
with hope.
EDGARDO I will always keep
A living memory of you.
LUCIA, EDGARDO 1:14 Verranno a te sullaura
I miei sospiri ardenti,
Udrai nel mar che mormora
Leco de miei lamenti...
Pensando chio di gemiti mi pasco, e di dolor.
EDGARDO Io parto...
LUCIA Addio
EDGARDO Rammentati! Ne stringe il cielo!...
LUCIA E amor.
(Edgardo parte; Lucia si ritira nel castello.) LUCIA, EDGARDO 1:14 My ardent sighs will come to you
On the breeze,
You will hear in the murmuring sea
The echo of my laments.
Thinking that I nourish myself with groans and pain.
Shed a sad tear over this pledge.
EDGARDO I'm leaving.
LUCIA Farewell
EDGARDO Remember! Heaven binds us!
LUCIA And love.
Edgardo leaves; Lucia retires to the castle

The blind love in Lucia's heart.
ENRICO She's approaching. Give me the forged letter
Normanno gives him a letter
and go out on the way which leads
to the city of the Scottish queen,
And amidst applause and happy cries
bring Arturo here.

Lucia e detto

ENRICO 1:17 Come closer, Lucia.
Lucia comes a few steps forward mechanically and still staring fixedly into the eyes of Enrico.
I hoped to see you happier on a day like this
On this day when the marriage torches
Are lit for you.
You look at me and are silent!
LUCIA Tape 1B 1:18 Il pallor funesto orrendo

ENRICO Spento Guglielmo; a Scozia comander Maria...
Prostrata nella polvere la parte chio seguia...
LUCIA Tremo!...
ENRICO Dal precipizio Arturo pu sottrarmi: sol egli...
LUCIA Ed io?...
ENRICO Salvarmi Devi.
LUCIA Ma!...
ENRICO Il devi.
(in atto di uscire)
LUCIA Oh ciel!.. LUCIA Woe is me! Alas! The lightening has struck!
1:19 I suffered in tears, I languished in pain
I entrusted my hope, my life, in one heart*That unfaithful heart was given to another!
The moment of death has arrived for me.
ENRICO A madness inflames you, a false love
You betrayed your blood for a vile seducer.
But appreciate that you had grace from Heaven
That unfaithful heart was given to another!
in the distance could be heard the echo of sounds of celebration and noisy shouts
LUCIA What's happening!
ENRICO Do you hear the floods of rejoicing sound out?
LUCIA Well?
ENRICO Your husband is coming
LUCIA A shiver runs through my veins!
ENRICO The nuptial bed is prepared for you.
LUCIA The tomb is prepared for me!
ENRICO This is a fateful hour! Listen to me!
LUCIA I have a veil over my eyes.
ENRICO William is dead. Mary will command Scotland.
The party which I followed lies in the dust
LUCIA I tremble!
ENRICO Only Arturo can pull me back from the precipice
LUCIA And I
ENRICO Must save me.
LUCIA But..
ENRICO You must do it
leaving
LUCIA Oh heavens!
Tu minvoli onore, e vita;
Tu la scure appresti a me...
Ne tuoi sogni mi vedrai
Ombra irata e minacciosa!...
Quella scure sanguinosa
Star sempre innanzi a te!
(Enrico parte affrettatamente. Lucia si abbandona su duna seggiola, ove resta qualche momento in silenzio;quindi vedendo giungere Raimondo, gli sorge allincontro ansiosissima.) ENRICO returning to Lucia and with a fast but energetic voice
1:20 If you could betray me
My fate would already be sealed.
You steal honour and life from me
you bring the axe close to me
You will see me in your dreams
An angry and threatening shade!
That bloody axe
Will always be before you!
LUCIA turning to Heaven eyes swollen with tears
You who see my tears,
You who can read my heart,
if my pain is not rejected
In heaven as it is on earth,
Take from me, Eternal God
This desperate life
I am so unfortunate,
That death is a blessing for me
Enrico leaves hastily. Lucia collapses on a chair where she remains in silence for a few moments, then seeing Raimondo arrive, rises to meet him in great anxiety
SCENA III
Raimondo, e detta.
LUCIA Ebben?
RAIMONDO Di tua speranza lultimo raggio tramont!
Quel silenzio assai
Dinfedelt ti parla!
LUCIA E me consigli?
RAIMONDO Di piegarti al destino.
LUCIA E il giuramento?...
RAIMONDO Tu pur vaneggi! I nuziali voti
Che il ministro di Dio non benedice
N il ciel, n il mondo riconosce.
LUCIA Ah! cede persuasa la mente...
Ma sordo alla ragion resiste il core.
RAIMONDO Vincerlo forza.
LUCIA Oh, sventurato amore!
RAIMONDO Deh, tarrendi, o pi sciagure
Ti sovrastano infelice...
LUCIA Taci... taci: tu vincesti... Non son tanto snaturata. Scene 3
Raimondo and above
LUCIA Well?
RAIMONDO Your last ray of hope has faded
I believed your suspicion , that your brother closed
all the routes, on the French soil,
To the man who you swore to love.
so that your news might not reach him: I myself
had a letter, written by you,
brought to him by a safe hand. In vain!
He is still silent! That silence
speaks much to you of his infidelity
LUCIA And what do you advise me to do?
RAIMONDO Resign to fate.
LUCIA And the oath?
RAIMONDO You're talking nonsense! Marriage vows
Which a minister of God did not bless
Neither Heaven nor earth recognises.
LUCIA Ah! My minds persuades me to yield
But my heart resists, deaf to reason.
RAIMONDO Master it by force.
LUCIA Oh, unfortunate love!
RAIMONDO Heavens, submit, or more disasters
Will overcome you, unhappy girl.
for my tender cares, for your dead father,
Let the danger to a brother
move you, and change your heart
Or your mother in her tomb will tremble at you in horror
LUCIA Be silent, You win. I am not so unnatural!
RAIMONDO Oh qual gioia in me tu desti!
Oh qual nube hai disgombrata!...
Al ben de tuoi qual vittima
Offri Lucia, te stessa; E tanto sacrifizio
Scritto nel ciel sar.
Se la piet degli uomini a te non fia concessa;
V un Dio, v un Dio,
che tergere Il pianto tuo sapr.
LUCIA Guidami tu... tu reggimi.. Son fuori di me stessa!..
Lungo crudel supplizio La vita a me sar!
(Partono.) RAIMONDO Oh what joy you awaken in me
Oh what clouds you have cleared away
For the good of your people
Sacrifice yourself, Lucia and a sacrifice like that
Will be written in Heaven.
If the mercy of men is not given to you,
There is a God, there is a God
Who will know how to dry your tears.
LUCIA Guide me, lead me. I am beside myself!
Life will be A long cruel torture to me

LUCIA I go to the sacrifice!
RAIMONDO (Good Lord, support the unhappy girl)
ENRICO Don't hesitate.
(softly to Lucia and flinging her furtive and terrible glances)
LUCIA Woe is me!
full of horror and almost out of her wits she, too signs the document.
(I have written my condemnation!)
ENRICO (I breathe again!)
LUCIA I freeze and burn! I feel faint!
In the background can be heard from the door, the din of people, who, withheld in vain, come quickly forward.

GLI ALTRI Oh terror!
A general rumpus. Alisa with the help of some ladies, lifts Lucia and lays her down carefully on a seat.)
EDGARDO 2:5 Chi mi frena in tal momento?...
Chi tronc dellire il corso?

E la man che al brando corse?
Della misera in favore
Nel mio petto un grido sorse!
il mio sangue! io lho tradita!
Ella sta fra morte e vita!...
Ah! che spegnere non posso
Un rimorso nel mio cor!)
LUCIA (Io sperai che a me la vita

Who curtailed the flow of my anger?
Her pain, her terror
Are the proof of remorse!
But like a withered rose
She stands between death and life!
I am vanquished!. I am moved.
I love you, ungrateful girl, I still love you!
ENRICO Who holds back my anger
and the hand which flys to my sword?
The miserable girl causes a cry to arise
In my breast!
She is my blood! I betrayed her!
She stands between death and life!
Alas that I cannot extinguish
the remorse in my heart!
LUCIA I hope that my terror
coming to
has shortened my life
But death doesn't help me
I still live to my torment!
The veil falls from my eyes
Heaven and earth have betrayed me
I would like to cry but I cannot.
Ah even tears fail me!
ARTURO, RAIMONDO, ALISA, NORMANNO, CHORUS What a terrible moment!
I cannot utter a word!
A dark cloud of terror
Seems to cover the sun's rays!
Like a withered rose
She stands between death and life!
Anyone who is not moved by her
Has a tiger's heart in his breast)
ENRICO, ARTURO, NORMANNO, CAVALIERI 2:6 Tallontana sciagurato...
O il tuo sangue fia versato...
(scagliandosi con le spade denudate
contro Edgardo)
Pace pace! Egli abborrisce
Lomicida, e scritto sta:
Chi di ferro altrui ferisce,
Pur di ferro perir.
Tutti ripongono le spade. Un momento di silenzio.
ENRICO (facendo qualche passo verso Edgardo,
e guardandolo biecamente di traverso)
Ravenswood in queste porte
Chi ti guida?
EDGARDO (altero)
La mia sorte, Il mio dritto... s;
Lucia la sua fede a me giur. ENRICO, ARTURO, NORMANNO, CAVALIERI 2:6 Go away, wretch
Or your blood will be spilt
They hurl forward with drawn swords against Edgardo
EDGARDO Also drawing out his sword
I will do, but along with mine, other blood will flow.
RAIMONDO putting himself between the adversaries and in an authoritative voice)
Respect, both of you, the great majesty of God.
In his name I command you,
to put down your anger and your sword.
Peace, peace, he abhors
murder and it is written
That he who kills another with the sword
Will die by the sword.
All put down their swords. A moment of silence.
ENRICO Taking a few steps towards Edgardo and regarding him askance sullenly
Ravenswood within these doors
Who brought you here?
EDGARDO clearly
My fate, my right, yes,
Lucia pledged her troth to me.
RAIMONDO Questo amor per sempre obblia; Ella daltri!...
EDGARDO Daltri!... ah! no.
RAIMONDO Mira.
(gli presenta il contratto nuziale)
EDGARDO dopo averlo rapidamente letto, e figgendo gli occhi in Lucia)
Tremi!... ti confondi! Son tue cifre?
(mostrando la di lei firma)
A me rispondi:
(con pi forza)
Son tue cifre?
LUCIA (con voce simigliante ad un gemito)
S...
EDGARDO (soffocando la sua collera)
Riprendi Il tuo pegno, infido cor.
(le rende il di lei anello)
Il mio dammi.
LUCIA Almen...
EDGARDO Lo rendi.

EDGARDO Another! Ah, no!
RAIMONDO Behold.
presents the marriage contract to him
EDGARDO after quickly reading it and fixing his eyes on Lucia
You tremble! You are apprehensive! Is this your writing?
Shows her her signature
Answer me.
More forcefully
Is this your writing
LUCIA with a voice like a groan
Yes
EDGARDO suppressing his anger
Take back your pledge, unfaithful heart.
Gives her back her ring
Give me mine.
LUCIA At least
EDGARDO Give it back
Lucia's bewilderment lets one perceive that the disturbed mind of the unhappy girl hardly understands everything which is happening as, trembling, she takes the ring from her finger, which Edgardo immediately gets hold of.
You have betrayed Heaven and love!
losing his control over his repressed disdain, he throws the ring, and stamps on it
Be accursed the moment
which made me love you
Evil lineage. In loathing, I must fly from you!
Ah! may the angry hand of God scatter you
ENRICO, ARTURO, NORMANNO, CAVALIERI Insane boldness!
Get out from here, flee the fury which burns
only one moment delays its blows.
But soon it will fall more appallingly, more fiercely
On his hated head
Yes, the stain of such a black outrage
Will be washed out with your blood.
Calpestando lesangue mia spoglia
Allaltare pi lieta se ne andr!
LUCIA (cadendo in ginocchio)
Dio lo salva... in s fiero momento
Duna misera ascolta laccento...
la prece dimmenso dolore
Che pi in terra speranza non ha...
E lestrema domanda del core,
Che sul labbro spirando mi sta!
RAIMONDO, ALISA, DAME Infelice, tinvola... taffretta...
(a Edgardo)
I tuoi giorni... il suo stato rispetta.
Vivi... e forse il tuo duolo fia spento:
Tutto lieve alleterna piet.
Quante volte ad un solo tormento
Mille gioie succeder non fa!
(Raimondo sostiene Lucia,
EDGARDO Throwing down his sword and offering his breast to his enemies)
Slaughter me, and may the best man at the wedding
be the fool with a betrayed heart.
The ground bathed with my blood
will be a sweet sight for the false woman!
Trampling over my bloodless remains,
she will go more happily to the altar!
LUCIA falling to her knees
God save him, in such a fierce moment
hear the words of a miserable woman.
It is the prayer of immense pain
Which has no more hope on earth
And the last request of my heart
which rests on my dying lips!
RAIMONDO, ALISA, DAME Unhappy girl, go away, hurry
to Edgardo
Respect her rank, live out your days
and perhaps your sorrow may be come to an end
All is joy to eternal piety.
How many times does not a single torment
Cause a thousand joys to follow.
Raimondo supports Lucia in whom anguish has reached its height. Alisa and the ladies are around her. The others chase Edgardo right up to the door. Meanwhile, the curtain falls

SCENA I
S, tuona o cielo...
Imperversate o turbini... sconvolto

Scene 1
A ground floor room near Wolferag castle, next to a hall. A table, bare of all ornament and an large old chair form all the furnishings. At the back is a door that leads to the exterior. It is flanked by two windows which, having broken panes, allow one to glimpse most of the ruins of the aforementioned castle, and one side of the same leaning over the sea.
It is night. The place is feebly lit by a dim lamp The sky is horribly black; thunder, lightening and the howling wind mingle with the falling of rain.
Edgardo is seated near the table immersed in his melancholy thoughts, after a few moments he shakes himself and looking through the windows:
EDGARDO This night is horrible
Like my fate!
Lightening flashes
Yes, thunder Oh heavens,
Rage, O storm, the order of things
is upset, and may the world die.
I don't deceive myself! I hear a horse
Pawing the ground nearby - it is stopping!
Who could come here to me
through danger and fury
of the storm.

EDGARDO What boldness! Asthon!
ENRICO Yes!
EDGARDO Do you dare to show yourself
to me within these walls?
ENRICO I stand here for your downfall
Did you not come under my roof?
EDGARDO Here the unavenged spirit of my father
still roams about and he seems to tremble!
Each breeze here breathes death for you!
The earth quakes for you!
In crossing the terrible threshold
You should truly pant with fear.
Like a man who, while still living
Goes down to dwell in his grave.
ENRICO with fierce joy
The sacred rite was conductedAfterwards at the nuptial bed of Lucia
EDGARDO He tears the wounded heart still further!
Oh torment! Oh jealousy!
ENRICO My abode resounds with joy
and acclamation,
But within my heart, revenge speaks even louder!
I brought myself here, in the middle of the wind
To hear his voice still,
And the fury of the elements
responds to my fury!
EDGARDO What do you want from me?
with lordly impatience
ENRICO Listen to me.
In order to punish the offence
to my people, my avenging sword
hangs suspended over you
Could another snuff you out?
Ah! never! you know who must cut your throat!
EDGARDO I know that to my father's ashes
I swore to tear out your heart.
ENRICO You!
EDGARDO When?
with noble disdain
ENRICO At the first light of morning.
EDGARDO Where?
ENRICO By the chill caskets of the Ravenswoods.
EDGARDO I will come.
ENRICO Prepare to remain there.
EDGARDO There I will kill you.
O may the sun rise more quickly

Thus may it light upon you - the horrible contest

Sopraggiungono molti gruppi di Dame e Cavalieri
sfavillanti di gioia, si uniscono in crocchio

"Il mio sposo ov?" mi disse:
E nel volto suo pallente
Un sorriso balen! Infelice! della mente
La virtude a lei manc!
TUTTI Oh! qual funesto avvenimento!...
Tutti ne ingombra cupo spavento!
Notte, ricopri la ria sventura
Col tenebroso tuo denso vel.
Ah! quella destra di sangue impura
Lira non chiami su noi del ciel.
RAIMONDO Eccola! RAIMONDO gesturing that all should surround him and having somewhat recovered his breath
2:10 From the room to which I
brought Lucia with her husband ,
came a wail, a cry
As of a man close to death!
I ran swiftly into that room.
Alas, a terrible calamity!
Arturo lay stretched out on the ground
Silent, cold, bloody!
And Lucia clutched the knife
That had killed him!
All are horrified
She stared into my eyes
"Where is my husband?" she asked me:
And a smile flashed across her pale face.
Unhappy girl! her mental faculties
have failed her!
TUTTI Oh! what a lamentable thing to happen!
We are all full of dark horror!
Night, cover the dreadful misfortune
with your thick, shadowy veil.
Ah! For that right hand besmirched with blood
do not call down on us the anger of Heaven!
RAIMONDO There she is!
SCENA V
Lucia, Alisa e detti.

RAIMONDO Savanza Enrico!... Scene 5
Lucia, Alisa and above
Lucia is dressed in a simple, white dress; her hair is tousled, and her face, covered with the gloom of death, making her more like a ghost than a living creature.
Her petrified gaze, convulsive words, and finally an ill-omened smile show not only a terrible madness but also the signs of a life that is already drawing to its close.
CHORUS Oh merciful heavens! She looks as if she has come from the tomb!
LUCIA The sweet sound of his voice strikes me
Ah! That voice
Descends here into my heart
Edgardo! I am restored to you.
I have fled from your enemies. Ice
snakes through my breast! Every part of me trembles!
My feet stumble! Sit down with me for a while,
near the fountain. Alas!
The dreadful phantom rises up and separates us!
Here let us take cover, Edgardo, at the foot of the altar
It is scattered with roses! Say, do you not hear
A heavenly harmony? Ah the marriage hymn sounds!
The ceremony is prepared for us, for us!
How happy I am! Oh a joy that is felt
and cannot be uttered.
The incense burns, the sacred torches
shine all around ! Look, there is the minister!
Give me your right hand. Oh happy day!
At last I am yours, you are mine! God gave you to me
Every pleasure is better to me when shared with you.
From a kindly heaven, life will be laughter for us.
RAIMONDO, ALISA e CHORUS Have pity on her Lord in her appalling state.
raising their hands to Heaven
RAIMONDO Enrico is coming!
SCENA VI
ENRICO (accorrendo)
Ditemi: Vera latroce scena?
RAIMONDO Vera, pur troppo!
ENRICO Ah! perfida!... Ne avrai condegna pena...
(scagliandosi contro Lucia)
RAIMONDO, ALISA, CORO Tarresta... Oh ciel!...
RAIMONDO Non vedi lo stato suo?
LUCIA Che chiedi?...
(sempre delirando)
ENRICO Oh qual pallor!
(fissando Lucia, che nellimpeto di collera
non aveva prima bene osservata) Scene 6
ENRICO running up
Tell me, is the appalling scene real?
RAIMONDO Only too real!
ENRICO Ah traitor! You will be suitably punished for it.
hurling himself at Lucia
RAIMONDO, ALISA, CHORUS Stop! Oh heavens!
RAIMONDO Don't you see what a state she is in?
LUCIA What do you want?
still delirious
ENRICO Oh what pallor!
staring at Lucia who in the impetus of rage he had not observed properly at first
LUCIA Me misera!...
RAIMONDO Ha la ragion smarrita.
ENRICO Gran Dio!...
Segnai quel foglio vero...
Nellira sua terribile
Calpesta, oh Dio! lanello!...
Mi maledice!... Ah! vittima
Fui dun crudel fratello,
Ma ognor tamai... lo giuro...
Chi mi nomasti? Arturo!
Ah! non fuggir... Perdono...
GLI ALTRI Qual notte di terror! LUCIA Woe is me!
RAIMONDO She has lost her reason.
ENRICO Great God!
RAIMONDO You should tremble for her life, O cruel man.
LUCIA Don't look a me so fiercely.
I signed that paper, it is true -
In his dreadful anger, Oh God
he tramples on the ring!
He curses me! Ah! I am the victim
Of a cruel brother,
But I always loved you, I swear it.
Who did you appoint for me? Arturo!
Ah! don't flee. Forgive me.
GLI ALTRI What a night of terror!
LUCIA Presso alla tomba io sono...
Odi una prece ancor.
Deh! tanto almen tarresta,
Chio spiri a te dappresso...
Gi dallaffanno oppresso
Gelido langue il cor!
Un palpito gli resta...
un palpito damor.
2:13 Spargi d'amaro pianto Il mio terrestre velo,
Serba il rimorso a me!)
Si tragga altrove... Alisa, Pietoso amico...
(a Raimondo)
Ah! voi la misera vegliate...
(Alisa e le Dame conducono altrove Lucia)
Io pi me stesso in me non trovo!...
(parte nella massima costernazione:
tutti lo seguono, tranne Raimondo e Normanno)
RAIMONDO Delator! gioisci dellopra tua.
NORMANNO Che parli?
RAIMONDO S, dellincendio che divampa e strugge
Questa casa infelice hai tu destata
La primiera favilla.
NORMANNO Io non credei...
RAIMONDO Tu del versato sangue, empio! tu sei
La ria cagion!... Quel sangue
Or vanne, e trema.
(Egli segue Lucia: Normanno esce per lopposto lato.) LUCIA I am close to the grave
Hear one more prayer.
Alas! Let this at least stop you,
that I am breathing my last before you.
Now, oppressed by anguish
my icy heart fails!
One beat remains to it,
It is a beat of love.
2:13 Sprinkle with bitter tears my earthly veil,
while up there in Heaven I will pray for you.
Only when you arrive
will Heaven be beautiful for me!
she remains almost lifeless in arms of Alisa
RAIMONDO, ALISA, CHORUS Now it is impossible to restrain tears
ENRICO
Remorse offers me
a life of mourning, of tears
Take her away, Alisa, merciful friend
To Raimondo
Ah! Watch over the poor girls
Alisa and the ladies lead Lucia away
I am beyond myself!
leaves in greatest consternation, all follow him, except Raimondo and Normanno
RAIMONDO Informer! Enjoy your work.
NORMANNO What are you saying?
RAIMONDO Yes, you raised the first sparks
of the fire that flared up
and consumed this unhappy house.
NORMANNO I didn't think
RAIMONDO You, traitor, you are the dreadful cause
of spilt blood!
May that blood accuse you before Heaven,
And already the Supreme hand signs your sentence.
Now go away, and tremble.
He follows Lucia, Normanno leaves by the opposite side)
SCENA VII
Albeggia.
EDGARDO 2:14 Tombe degli avi miei, lultimo avanzo
Duna stirpe infelice Deh! raccogliete voi.
Cess dellira Il breve foco... sul nemico acciaro
Abbandonar mi vo. Per me la vita
orrendo peso!... luniverso intero
un deserto per me senza Lucia!...
Di liete faci ancora splende il castello!
Ah! scarsa fu la notte
al tripudio!... Ingrata donna!
Mentrio mi struggo in disperato pianto,
2:15 Fra poco a me ricovero dar negletto avello...
Una pietosa lagrima
Non scender su quello!...
Fin degli estinti, ahi misero!
Manca il conforto a me!
Tu pur, tu pur dimentica
Quel marmo dispregiato:
Scene 7
Exterior of the castle with the entrance door: a room there, is still lit from within. Further away, a chapel, the way to it is scattered with the graves of the Ravenswood family -
It is dawning
EDGARDO 2:14 Tombs of my forefathers, gather up
the final remnant, alas, of an unlucky lineage,
The brief fire of anger has ceased.
To the enemy's sword I would abandon myself,
Life, for me is a dreary weight! The whole universe
Is a desert to me without Lucia!
The castle still shines with festive lanterns
Ah! the night is scarcely long enough
for all that rejoicing! Thankless woman!
Whilst I pine in hopeless tears,
You laugh, rejoicing next to your happy spouse!
You with joy in your heart, I with death!
2:15 Before long, a neglected tomb will shelter me
A pitying tear
Will not fall upon that!
Until I am dead, ah, how unhappy I am!
I will have no comfort!
You too, forget
That despised marble:
But never pass by it, cruel girl
By the side of your husband.
At least respect the ashes of one who died for you.
SCENA VIII

CHORUS For Lucia

CHORUS The peal of death is already resounding

My fate is decided!
I want to see her again
See her again and afterwards
