LSO Season 2017/18
lso.co.uk
WelcomeKathryn McDowell
It is with great pleasure that the London Symphony Orchestra presents its 2017/18 concert season to you and moreover, gives you this preview of what is in store for Sir Simon Rattle’s first concert season with the Orchestra as its new Music Director.
Sir Simon’s programme with the LSO illustrates some of his longer-term plans for the future, including beginning each concert season with a world premiere from a British composer (generously commissioned by the Barbican) and continuing the January feature performances, which have included over the past and current seasons Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande, Ligeti’s Le grand macabre and 2017/18’s ‘Genesis’ project in collaboration with the Barbican, as well as a focus on late Mahler.
The LSO had a special relationship with Leonard Benstein and this season marks one hundred years since his birth. We are delighted to mark this occasion with his symphonies and concert performances of Wonderful Town in the upbeat to the centenary year. ‘Lennie’ Bernsteinwas the LSO’s President from 1987, so this season also marks 30 years since the beginning of his memorable tenure.
Last March, Gianandrea Noseda was appointed LSO Principal Guest Conductor and we will continue an exploration of Shostakovich symphonies with him that will span the next few years of his work with the LSO.
Michael Tilson Thomas, LSO Conductor Emeritus, returns to the Orchestra in May 2017 with Sibelius and Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, and throughout the season the Orchestra looks forward to programmes with Bernard Haitink, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, François-Xavier Roth, Sir Mark Elder, Nikolaj Znaider and Robin Ticciati among many more. We welcome new faces too, such as Susanna Mälkki making her LSO debut in April 2018.
I hope you can join us throughout our 2017/18 concert season.
