OFFICE HOURS
St. Charles Borromeo Church August 9, 2020
Entrance Antiphon Look to your covenant, O Lord,
and forget not the life of your poor ones for ever. Arise, O God, and defend your cause,
And forget not the cries of those who seek you.
Glory to God Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,
we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory,
Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One,
You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ, with the holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father, Amen.
First Reading I Kings 19:9a, 11-13a
At the mountain of God, Horeb, Elijah came to a cave where he took shelter. Then the LORD said to him, “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD; the LORD will be passing by.” A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the LORD— but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake— but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire— but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Psalm 85 Lord, let us see your kindness,
and grant us your salvation.
Second Reading Romans 9:1-5
Brothers and sisters: I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie; my conscience joins with the Holy Spirit in bearing me witness that I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites; theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Gospel Matthew 14:22-33
After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 9, 2020
Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and in-visible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father be-fore all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made con-substantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salva-tion he came down from heaven, and by the Ho-ly Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I be-lieve in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the for-giveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
The Liturgy of the Eucharist May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands
for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all
his holy Church.
Holy Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
Mystery of Faith We proclaim your Death, O Lord,
and profess your Resurrection until you come again.
The Communion Rite
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Deliver us, Lord, we pray… the coming of our savior, Jesus Christ.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.
Lamb of God
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.
Communion Lord, I am not worthy that you should
enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
Communion Antiphon
The bread that I will give, says the Lord, is my flesh for the life of the world.

Thank you!!
This weekend, we welcome the newly-ordained Father Joshua J. Cochrac (pronounced CORE RACK) as a parochial vicar (old term: “associate pastor”) to St. Charles Borromeo Parish. If my math is correct, he is the twenty-ninth priest I have welcomed as a pastoral staff
member. As mentioned, Father Josh was ordained just a few days ago, last Saturday, August 1. He and his classmate were originally scheduled for ordination in May. But the pandemic changed all that. Father Josh has roots in the Old Brooklyn area, just north of us. He attended the former Our Lady of Good Counsel School (now Mary, Queen of Peace). The family then moved to Olmsted Falls and Father Josh attended Olmsted Falls High School. He worked at Giant Eagle for a few years and was assigned to the Parma Day Drive Store! Discerning a call to priestly ministry, Father Josh enrolled at Borromeo Seminary, graduated from John Carroll University, and completed his theological studies at St. Mary Seminary. Father Josh completed his third year internship at St. Ambrose Parish in Brunswick (where I spent my first seven years as a priest) and, for the last year, he served as a deacon at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Wickliffe.
Welcome to St. Charles, Father Joshua J. Cochrac!
We have begun another series of phone calls to all our parishioners. If we no longer have a working phone number for you, we will send a follow-up letter requesting an update. We will also try to get an e-mail address for as many parishioners as possible. Thanks for your help!

Merici Chapel… In these uncertain times, we have a lot on our minds and are worried about many things—COVID 19, jobs, returning to work and school, politics and social unrest. One thing you don’t have to worry about, visiting Jesus in Merici Chapel. His door is always open and He’s a good listener and will calm your fears and give you peace of mind. Try a short visit once a week, it just may and should become a lifelong habit.

Thank you to all of you for your continued dedication to Merici Chapel and Eucharistic Adoration. Our Lord will certainly bless each of you for your dedication. Based upon our current records, 109 of the 168 hours in the week are covered by one or more Eucharistic Adorers. Our Goal is 100% coverage, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In an effort to update our records, please email Michael Coyle at [email protected] or drop a note to his attention at the Parish Office as to what hour or hours you are currently covering. If you are a New Adorer since our last update, please do the same — email me or drop me a note with the time you are Adoring and phone or email your contact information. Again, thank you for your dedication.
