LiteracyatGreatSankeyHighSchoolIntroductionGreatSankeyHighSchoolseekstoensurethatallstudentshavetheopportunitytodevelopthehighestlevelsofliteracyacrossthecurriculum.Literateyoungpeoplewillhaveaccesstoafarwiderrangeofopportunitiesonleavingschoolandhighlevelsofliteracyhelpprovidethefoundationsforstudentstobecomelife-longlearnersandsociallyresponsiblemembersofsociety.Weseektodevelopourstudents’sothattheylearntoreadandwriteforpleasureandthatthesebecomelife-longhabits.Itisourbeliefthatallchildrenshouldengagewithreadingandwritingandthatthisisawholeschoolresponsibility.Inadditiontoreadingandwriting,wealsobelievethatliteracyhelpsdevelopeffectivespeakingandlisteningskillsandenablesstudentstouselanguageinordertobecomeindependentlearners,thinkersandcommunicatorsandenhancestheirfutureemploymentprospects.TheimpactofourworkcanbeseenmostobviouslyinourstrongEnglishresults.HowliteracyispromotedThereareanumberofdifferentwaysinwhichliteracyispromotedthroughouttheschool.Theseinclude:

• LiteracytrainingformspartofourCPDwithformtutorsbeingsupportedtodelivertheliteracypassportsinPSHE

• Allstudentsaretrackedannuallyforreadingandspellingagesinyear7.Theinformationisalsosharedwithallstafftoenableappropriatedifferentiationaswellassupportingprogressacrossthewholecurriculum.

• TheEnglishfacultyholdregularmeetingswithprimaryY6teacherstobridgethegapbetweenYear6andYear7andtoensuremoderationofmarksacrossbothsettings.
