LISBON, PORTUGAL Arrive: 0800 Saturday June 21, 2014
Onboard: 1800 Tuesday June 24, 2014
Brief Overview: During the Age of
Discovery, the Portuguese people
took to the sea and colonized much
of Africa and South America between
1325 and 1700. The country’s
rugged coastline, scenic views and
city monuments remind visitors of this
nautical heritage. The maze-like
narrow streets and alleys of the
Alfama area of Lisbon provide the
perfect place for a cultural Scavenger
Hunt that will lead to the discovery of
many amazing sights, including the
Jeronimos Monastery in Belem.
Visitors to Lisbon will quickly notice
that the Portuguese “canvas” of
choice for centuries has been tile
painting. Beautiful murals adorn the
sides of common buildings, churches and museums alike. The traditional music of Fado can be heard and
enjoyed in restaurants and clubs at night. Nature lovers will enjoy a peaceful yoga and surf retreat or
exploring the ruins and zip-line at Sintra. Check out the SAS Fall 2013 Student Photo Gallery.
Out of town: Marvao and Portalegre offer a cool, relaxing alternative to the hot, crowded southern beaches of

LIS 103-101 LISBON & DISCOVERY TOUR Half Day
You will head to the
Belém area where you
will visit the Jeronimos
Monastery. This
monument, designed in
the Manueline style,
was built in the 16th
century, under the
orders of Manuel I, to
commemorate Vasco da
Gama's successful
return from India. Next,
you will visit the Maritime Museum, just next door. This is one of the most
important museums in Europe, evoking Portugal's domination of the
seas. It houses model ships from the Age of Discovery to present day.
Next, you will visit Confeitaria Nacional to taste the famous Pastel de
Belém. Across the street, you will visit the Belém Tower and the Monument to Discoveries. The Belem Toward was
built in 1515 as a fortress to guard the entrance to Lisbon's
harbor. It was the starting point for many of the voyages of
discovery, and was the last sight sailors had of their homeland. The
Monument to Discoveries was built in 1960 to commemorate the
500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. It
represents a three-sailed ship ready to depart, with sculptures of
important historical figures.

LIS 119-101 THE WATER TRAILS Half Day
The arcs of the ancient aqueduct are
an obligatory photo-op for any visitor
to Lisbon. Most people stop there.
Not you! You will actually get to walk
across the aqueduct (approx. 45 min)
and tour through century old tunnels
on this unique experience, all while
learning about the importance of
water to the city of Lisbon.
Lisbon Aqueduct was built in 1746 to bring the city its first clean drinking
water. Lisbon's remarkable aqueduct is made up of 109 stone arches. At
the time they were built, they were the tallest stone arches in the world.
The aqueduct’s total length is 36 miles and the most visible are the 14
arches crossing the Alcantara Valley. The tallest rise to a spectacular 213ft. You will be visiting the Lisbon
Aqueduct, Mãe de Agua reservoir, and the Loreto Gallery in the company of an expert who will explain this rare and
complex 18th century water supply system that used gravity to feed the major fountains of Lisbon.

LIS 105-101 LISBON PANORAMIC, AZEITÃO, & PALMELA Full Day
This is the ideal tour for those who would like to have a general view of
Lisbon, while also getting outside the city and in touch with Portuguese
culture, traditions, and history.
You will begin your visit to the Belém District, famous for its landmark
tower on the bank of the Tagus
River. Here, many explorers
embarked on their voyages of
discovery. You will have a
photo stop at Jeronimos
Monastery, a 16th century
architectural masterpiece
designed in Gothic Manueline
style. The riches brought back
by Portuguese explorers paid
for the splendid religious
monument.
You will travel over the Tagus River Bridge towards Azeitão, known for
its famous Moscatel de Setúbal wine where you will have the opportunity
to taste the local wines and learn about its production while visiting the wine lodge. After some free time in Azeitão
you will continue to Palmela Castle, where you will have fine views over 'Parque Natural da Arrábida' and Sesimbra.
Lunch will be at charming Pousada de Palmela rebuilt over a former castle and once convent. Today it houses a
beautiful posada, which is a landmark of Portuguese heritage and culture. After lunch, you will cross the Vasco da
Gama Bridge. The bridge is the largest in Europe and will take you to the eastern part of Lisbon, also know as
Nations Park. This area was rebuilt for the World Exhibition Expo 98. Among its highlights is the Lisbon Aquarium,
inhabited by 10,000 animals and plants representing over 350 different species and reconstituting several of the
oceans’ ecosystems.
Enjoy a panoramic drive through this area before reaching Rossio - the heart of city center, where you will have
some time on your own for shopping or simply strolling around before returning to the ship.

LIS 201-201 MARVAO, CASTELO DE VIDE, & PORTALEGRE 2 Days/ 1 Night
Marvão is a medieval walled
village built up on steep rock.
At an altitude of 860 meters, it
overlooks a barren scene of
endless, almost volcanic, rocky
outcrops. Castelo de Vide is a
quaint little place for a short
visit, with its dazzling, white,
ancient cottages huddle
around a castle. In the 13th
century, it served as a place
for young couples to flock. Shoppers flock to Portalegre to sample the
world-renowned wool industry—tapestries that are extraordinarily detailed
and tightly-woven woolen reproductions of paintings are most popular.
Day 1: Drive by air-conditioned motorcoach to Alter do Chão. Visit the
great state horse-breeding establishment with rare equine breeds ,such as the Lusitano. Next, stop at Crato, where
the fortified Monastery of Flor da Rosa lies. After lunch, at the Pousada of Crato, proceed to Marvão. The road to
the Spanish border goes below the 3,000-foot-high escarpment of sheer rock crowded by the battlements of the
walls surrounding the castle town.
Day 2: After breakfast at the hotel, visit Marvão, resting between Castelo de Vide and the border of Spain. Continue
the tour towards Castelo de Vide. The town covers the slopes around the 14th century castle. Many of the little
whitewashed cottages have Gothic doors and windows, especially on the Jewish quarter. Enjoy lunch at Castelo de
Vide. After lunch, drive to Portalegre, in the foothills of the Mountain of São Mamede. The streets leading up to the
top of the town are lined with rococo houses adorned with fine ironwork balconies and azulejos (tiles). Explore
Portalegre before returning to Lisbon

LIS 204-201 ALGARVE 2 Days/ 1 Night
Depart from Lisbon towards
the region of Algarve, famous
for its temperate climate and
sandy beaches.
Travel past the cultivated
and picturesque Algarve
countryside toward Silves,
the former capital of the
Moorish province of Algarve.
The city retains its proper character and an interesting historical center.
Visit the castle, built in original Moorish architecture and enjoy the views
from the town.
You will then head north to the foothills of the Serra de Monchique, a
green and wooded mountain range of cork, chestnut, and eucalyptus.
From here, you will go to Alvor, famous for its deluxe and private resorts where you will enjoy some time to relax
and have lunch at a local restaurant.
After lunch, visit the historical town of Lagos (Google it!). The sturdy medieval walls of Lagos testify to its
importance in the 15th century, when shipyards built the caravels. Reminders of the past can be seen around
every corner, including the site of Europe’s first slave market and the ornately gilded Chapel of Saint Anthony. Drive
to the Hotel in Praia da Rocha for dinner and an overnight stay.
In the morning, search for the enigmatic dolphins off the Algarve coast! Sadly, most people only ever get to see
dolphins in captivity. This is an opportunity to see them in their natural environment! The RIBS (Rigid Inflatable
Boat) are the same as those used by the Coastguard and Greenpeace, conforming to the highest of safety
standards. This tour offers spectacular sea views of the Algarve coastline as well as the deeper offshore waters
where the dolphins can be found.
Please Note: This tour is not suitable for those with injuries or conditions, which may be affected by the bumpy ride. A degree
of agility is required when boarding the RIB. Pregnant women and children under 6 may not participate. If you are prone to
seasickness, please take the necessary precautions. Prior to boarding, you will be given a safety briefing. The tour is subject
to weather and sea conditions and may be cancelled on the morning of arrival in port. Passengers are advised that whilst
every effort will be made to find the dolphins, these animals are in their natural habitat and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

LIS 110-203 LISBON WITH FADO & FOLKLORE MUSIC DINNER Evening
Experience Portugal’s most famous
musical form Fado (“fate”) in this tour.
The essence of Fado is saudade, “to
miss,” which is carried in the lyrical
and sentimental expression of the
singer accompanied by Portuguese
guitar. It’s an urban music, whose
origins are uncertain but certainly
involve influences from Portugal’s overseas explorations.
The guide will meet the group at port and then start a panoramic drive to
the city center. Alfama is the oldest quarter of Lisbon where the best Fado
houses are located. Enjoy a brief walk until Pateo de Alfama, a restaurant
full of history and charm. Here you will taste authentic Portuguese cuisine and see a Fado show representing

The Casas do Gaiato
were born of the
intuition felt by Priest

Aguiar, after visiting the
poor men in the area’s
degraded
neighborhoods. The
purpose of each Casa

educate, and integrate
infants and young
children who do not
have family support, into society. Priest Américo used to say "we are the
family for those who do not have family". The Casas do Gaiato are private
Institutions living day by day the evangelical risk of the human solidarity.
Through the division of tasks and sharing resources we will provide some improvements in the institution premises.
Each team, conducted by a specialized monitor, will be in charge of a certain area: painting,
decorating, and gardening are just a few to name. All in unison, we will provide moments of joy for
both participants and the children.

LIS 116-401 COOKING EXPERIENCE Half Day
It is through gastronomy that
one may discover the most
genuine characteristics of a
country. Experience the
Portuguese way around the table,
at a workshop with a fully
equipped kitchen, where you will
first taste some appetizers. This
means, a glass of wine,
traditional bread, Portuguese
country sausages, cheese, and olive oil.
After this introduction you will get down to business as you prepare the starters, the main
course and dessert. Everything in this workshop will relate to Portuguese traditional
gastronomy, some of it sharing century old recipes created at monasteries. The workshop
will end at the table, where you will have the chance to savor all the delicacies you have
cooked.
