Lisa Melland: The People’s Sculptor – John Rogers and
the Popularity of the Rogers Groups
Lisa Melland will speak about New Canaan artist John Rogers (1829-1904), whose statuary were popular collectibles in the Victorian era. The New Canaan Museum & Historical Society has one of the largest collections of Rogers Groups in the country. It is housed in Rogers’ own studio, which was moved to the campus after his death and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. Come hear about this interesting artist and his vision for producing art for the masses.
Lisa Melland has been a resident of New Canaan for 23 years. For the last three years, Lisa served as Regent of the Hannah Benedict Carter Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, in New Canaan. Lisa was recently elected to the office of Connecticut DAR State Chaplain and appointed as a National Vice Chair at DAR Headquarters in Washington, D.C. The Hannah Benedict Carter Chapter, NSDAR, was organized in 1894 and is one of the largest and fastest growing DAR Chapters in Connecticut. Lisa founded and chaired the Mead Playground Renovation (1998) and has held multiple community service leadership positions including serving as New Canaan Cares Kitchen Tour Chair for two years. She is the recipient of a “Volunteer of the Year” Award from New Canaan Cares. Lisa graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business, B.S. Degree in Economics, magna cum laude. Lisa was a Brand Management Marketing executive with Clorox and Kenner Toys.

The heart of the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society is its clothing and textile collection. Included within this extensive collection is more than 400 pairs of shoes that span from 1750 to the present. Most have been donated over the past fifty years by New Canaan residents. Some were actually made in New Canaan at the Benedict Shoe Factory. Donna Gorman, board governor and owner of SeeDesign, Inc., conceived of, and curated, Shoes, an extensive exhibition of men’s, women’s and children’s shoes. They were curated based on a number of factors including age, condition, originality, and function. Come see early galoshes, sneakers, beaded heels, dancing shoes, furry sleigh boots, and much more. Learn about the shoe industry in New Canaan that thrived for more than 100 years and helped shape the downtown commercial district. This is the first time in the history of this Museum that such an expanded selection has been on exhibit. It is not to be missed.

Constance Old’s work comes from a tradition of upcycling materials that began in Colonial America. Settlers were quick to adhere to the mantra of “waste not, want not.” Living in rural New England with little money, women did what they could to cover the cold floors in their homes. They took the burlap from empty seed sacks, cut strips of fabric out of old clothes, ribbons, or scraps, pulled the fabric through the burlap and made floor coverings. Constance Old collects materials, including sales receipts, bar codes from merchandise or food, newspa-per bags, caution tape or other plas-tics. Then, using early American traditional skills – rug hooking,
embroidery, needlepoint, she repurposes the detritus of twenty-first century consumerism. By hearkening back to an age where conservation was born of necessity, her art speaks to the excesses of contemporary society and the need to preserve the fragile environment.
The show features more than forty works by Constance Old. In addition, the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society presents materials from its permanent collection, including Victorian samplers, a cigar ribbon quilt, and sewing tools. These items illustrate that traditional skills have produced incredible art from repurposed materials for more than 200 years.
Common Ground: Irwin reflects Torrance York's love of Irwin Park. The
photographs taken over the past 4 years emphasize the changing palette of the
seasons and represent her experience of a specific place. For this reason, she
includes the GPS coordinates in the title of each photograph. "I create these
compositions from my field of view at these particular points. I say 'created' in-
stead of 'captured' because the eye cannot play with focus on its own. A shallow
depth of field can only be examined through the camera lens."
Ms. York has exhibited locally and nationally in group and solo shows. She is the
recipient of numerous awards, and her work has been published in The Photo
Review, Connecticut Cottages & Gardens and New Canaan/Darien Magazine.

Wesley Fredericks and his wife Jeanne moved to New Canaan over thirty years ago and have been members of the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society ever since. They have two adult children who were educated in the local school system. Wes is a retired partner of Jenner & Block, where he served as head of the New York Corporate Practice and is now of counsel. He specializes in corporate governance and transactions and chaired the American Bar Association Business Law Section’s International Business Law Committee. He is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and has served on the Executive Committee of its Alumni Council where he chaired the committee responsible for nominating candidates for the seats on the University’s Board of Trustees reserved for alumni. He is a recent recipient of the University’s Heritage Award. Wes received his law degree from Columbia University. He is proud to sit on the Board of Historic Deerfield. Prior to moving to New Canaan, he and his family lived in Wilton where he served on the Board of its Histor-
ical Society. Locally he has also served as a board member and officer of several sporting clubs. Fond of antiques and colonial architecture, Wes and Jeanne live in their second historic saltbox home and recently saved the Deacon Peck house of Cheshire from destruction. Of the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society, Wes says: “The New Canaan Museum & Historical Society is key to preserving and transmitting the legacy of our town and region for the benefit of future generations and I look forward to assisting ac-tively in that mission.” Originally from Toronto, Canada, Janet Lanaway and her husband and two sons moved to New Canaan in 2001. Janet is a Canadian CPA and has had her own accounting practice for 30 years. Prior to that, she was a CFO of a retail brokerage firm in Toronto and worked at Deloitte in its Toronto office. She has held board positions and served as Treasurer with the New Canaan Community Foundation, Staying Put in New Canaan, Carriage Barn Arts Center and Connecticut and New Canaan Chapters of the American Red Cross. She has been President of New Canaan High School PFA, Encore Club and Newcomers Club of New Canaan. Janet has also served on the Town’s Audit Com-mittee. “Having not grown up in New Canaan or the US, I’m very interested in the rich history of our community. The Museum & Historical Society is a valuable resource in preserving that history.”
Ashley Shackelton has been a resident of New Canaan for seven years. She has four young daughters and is actively involved in the community. She is currently on the board of West Elementary School and has held board positions with the Young Women's League of New Canaan and New Haven Youth Tennis & Education. Additionally, she is serving in a number of roles at Dartmouth College, including as President of the Class Officer's Executive Board, Outreach Chair for Fairfield County and Interview Coordinator for New Canaan. Prior to moving to New Canaan, she worked in brand management at Novartis and asset management at UBS. Ashley is a graduate of Dartmouth College and NYU Stern School of Business. "I hope to help build an appreciation for New Canaan's historical significance and cultural heritage by advancing new programming and exhibits that appeal to all ages."

BYLAWS OF
THE NEW CANAAN MUSEUM AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY (as revised and adopted, June 10, 2019)
ARTICLE I
Name and Location
Section 1. Name:
The Name of the Corporation/Organization shall be The New Canaan Museum and Historical
Society (hereafter referred to as the “Museum”) Section 2. Location:
The principal office of the Corporation/Organization shall be 13 Oenoke Ridge, New Canaan, CT 06840
ARTICLE II
Purpose
Section 1. Mission:
The New Canaan Museum and Historical Society is a cultural institution that focuses on preservation, modernism, education and
community. Through exhibits, programs, library services and events, we celebrate history and explore its role in shaping the future.
ARTICLE III
Classes of Members
Section 1. Members: Any person or family interested in the purposes and aims of the Museum may become a Member upon payment of dues, with one
vote per membership (individual, family, etc.) in person or by proxy, at any meeting of the Museum.
Section 2. Honorary Members:
The Board of Governors may elect as Honorary Members any person whose contributions to the Society have been of outstanding
significance. Such Honorary Member shall be entitled to all privileges of membership, but shall not be required to pay dues.
Section 3. Other Classes:
The Board of Governors may establish other classes of membership for financial contributions
that exceed basic membership dues.
ARTICLE IV
Meetings of the Museum Membership
Section 1. Annual Meeting:
The Annual Meeting of the Museum shall be held on the second Monday of June in each year, provided, however, that the Board of
Governors may fix another date in June for any such meeting when, in its judgment, it is not convenient or practicable to hold the
meeting on the date so designated. At the Annual Meeting, reports on the state and financial condition of Mus shall be sub-
mitted by the President and Treasurer.
At such Annual Meeting, the Governance Committee shall present a slate of candidates for election to the Board of Governors.
Museum members shall elect such number of Governors as shall constitute a Board of not less than 15 nor more than 24 members
who shall be elected for three-year terms, with the terms arranged, as far as being practical in the judgment of the Board of Gover-
nors, so that one third of the membership is subject to election each year.
Any other matter pertaining to the affairs of the Museum may be brought before the meeting for action, provided, however, that any
proposal has been submitted to, and approved by, the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors at least one week in advance
of the meeting. The foregoing shall be the sole procedure to bring matters before the meeting by any member of the Museum. There
shall be no matters recognized from the floor.
Section 2. Special Meetings:
Special Meetings of the Museum may be held whenever the Board of Governors shall decide, provided the purpose thereof shall be
given in the notice of the meeting.
Section 3. Notice of Meetings:
Notice of the Annual Meeting of the Museum and any special meetings shall be given at least seven days before any such meeting
through online communications, including the newsletter and/or other electronic communication.
Section 4. Quorum:
Twenty-five members present in person or by proxy shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of business at said meetings, except
that a majority of any members’ present may vote to adjourn.
ARTICLE V
Board of Governors
Section 1. Governors:
The Board of Governors, elected by the Museum as provided in Article IV, Section 1 of these By-Laws, shall have charge of and
direct all the affairs of the Museum, and shall be the governing Board in general control of all the business of the Museum, except
when it shall be ordered otherwise by special direction or action taken at a duly called meeting of the Museum.
Each member elected to serve as a Governor shall serve a term of three years, commencing immediately upon an affirmative vote. At
the end of that term, each member shall be evaluated by the Governance Committee. Subject to the Governance Committee’s recom-
mendation, each Governor may serve a second term of three years. After the second successive term, a member may not be re-
elected to the Board of Governors without a minimum of one year without Board service, after which such member may again be re-
elected to serve for at most an additional two three-year terms, unless determined by a majority vote of the Board of Governors to be
in the best interest of the Museum to make exception to this provision.
Section 2. Election and Appointment of Officers:
At the first meeting after the Annual Meeting of the Museum, the Governance Committee shall propose a slate of officers - President,
Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer - to be elected by the Board of Governors. Such officers serve a two-year term from the date
of their election. Officers may be proposed by the Governance Committee, and elected by the Board, to serve a second term of two
years.
The Board shall appoint such additional officers as it deems necessary for the proper functioning of the Museum.
The exact duties and responsibilities of such last-mentioned officers shall be prescribed and directed by the Board, and they shall
serve for such terms as the Board shall determine.
Section 3. Resignation and Vacancies:
Any elected Governor who shall miss three consecutive Board meetings without having given prior notification shall be deemed to
have submitted his or her resignation to the Board. The Board only may waive this provision. Any vacancy occurring in the Board of
Governors or in any of said offices, before the expiration of its term, may be filled for the unexpired portion thereof by the Board of
Governors. Board members fulfilling unexpired terms with one year or less shall be eligible to complete two full terms subsequent to
the expiration of the fulfilled term. All others filling vacancies shall be eligible to complete one additional full term.
Section 4. Meetings of the Board: At least six regular meetings of the Board of Governors shall be held annually.
Additional or Special meetings may be held whenever the Board shall so vote and whenever the President shall
deem the same necessary. The President shall call a Special Meeting whenever four members of the Board request such a meeting in
writing.
Notice of all Special or Additional meetings shall be given by the Secretary in writing and to include online, electronic notices to all
members of the Board at least seven days before such meeting, unless Special or Additional Meetings shall be called by a vote of the
Board at the regular meeting.
Section 5. Electronic Meeting Policy: Meetings of the Board of Governors, or any committee designated by the Board of Governors, may be held through the use of a con-
ference telephone or similar communications equipment such as email, text, instant messaging or similar communication so long as
all members participating in such meeting can communicate with one another at the time of such meeting. Participation in such a
meeting constitutes presence in person at such meeting. Approval of said meeting motions may be accomplished via email, text or
fax.
Section 6. Emergency Meetings:
In the event of an emergency, the President, or, in the President’s absence, any officer of the Board, may convene a meeting of the
Board of Governors. Such an emergency meeting may be convened telephonically or via Skype if necessary in the interest of expedi-
ency. Formal notice provisions will be suspended provided, however, that no action may be taken at an emergency meeting except
by majority vote of the Board.
Section 7. Quorum:
At any meeting of the Board, one-half of the members present in person shall constitute a quorum to transact any business, except
that a majority of any number present may vote to adjourn.
ARTICLE VI
Committees
Section 1. Committees of The Board of Governors:
The Board of Governors shall appoint four committees – an Executive Committee, a Finance
Committee, a Governance Committee and a Development Committee.
In addition, the Board may appoint such additional committees as it deems necessary from nominations made by the President. All
committees shall be subject to the direction of the Board of Governors.
Section 2. The Governance Committee: The Governance Committee shall present at the Annual Meeting a slate of candidates for election to the Board of Governors. Any
member of the Museum may nominate one or more members to the Board of Governors. The nominating process shall adhere to the
established Nominating Policy, approved by the Board of Governors, and amended from time to time, as deemed necessary by the
Board. The foregoing shall be the sole procedure to nominate members to the Board of Governors other than those nominated by the
Governance Committee. There shall be no nominations from the floor.
The Governance Committee shall present to the Board of Governors at the first Board meeting following the Annual Meeting a slate
of officers as set forth in Article V, Section 2.
ARTICLE VII
Duties of Officers
Section 1. The President:
The President shall preside at all meetings of the Museum and the Board of Governors; shall nominate members of committees ex-
cept as provided in Article VI, Section 1, hereof; shall sign all deeds, leases, contracts, and legal documents in the name of the Muse-
um, when authorized or approved by the Board of Governors, and in general shall be the executive head of the Museum and chief
administrative officer of the Board of Governors. The President shall make a report to the Annual Meeting of the Museum and to the
Board of Governors whenever requested.
Section 2. Vice President:
In the absence or inability to act as the President, the Board of Governors shall designate the Vice President to perform all duties of
the President. The Vice President shall perform such other duties as may be assigned by the President.
Section 3. Secretary:
The Secretary shall keep complete and accurate minutes and records of all Meetings of the Museum and of the Board of Governors.
The Secretary shall certify to all deeds, documents, and acts of the Museum or Board as required, and shall make such reports as re-
quired or requested by the Museum or the Board. The Secretary shall notify the President, prior to the next Board meeting, any
elected Governor absent from two consecutive Board meetings without having given prior notification of such absence.
Section 4. Treasurer:
The Treasurer shall be the fiscal agent of the Museum and the custodian of all funds and securities of the Museum. The Treasurer
shall make financial reports to the Board at each meeting thereof, and shall make a report to the Annual Meeting of the Museum. The
Treasurer, with the Finance Committee, shall be responsible for presenting a proposed annual budget to the Board of Governors at its
meeting in June of each year.
ARTICLE VIII
Fiscal Year
The fiscal year of the Museum shall be July 1 through June 30.
ARTICLE IX
Dues
The dues payable to the Museum for each class of membership shall be fixed from time to time by the Board of Governors.
ARTICLE X
Checks, Drafts, etc.
All checks, drafts, or order for the payment of money from the funds or accounts of the Museum shall be signed by any of the fol-
lowing: the President, Treasurer, Secretary, Vice President or the Executive Director, as specified in the Procedures of the Finance
Committee.
ARTICLE XI
Amendments
These By-Laws may be amended, altered, or repealed by a two-thirds vote of the members present and voting, either in person or by
proxy, at any meeting of the Museum where a quorum is pr s , provided notice of the proposed amendment, alteration or repeal
had been given in the notice of such meeting and as established as accepted practice.
NewsBank Partners with the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society to Provide the Digital Library of Early American Newspapers Thanks to the generosity of Dan Jones, President and CEO of NewsBank, the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society now offers researchers the opportunity to explore two major historical archive collections – Early American Newspapers and Historical News Ar-chives. Students and historians alike will be able to explore what was going on in local communities to research national and interna-tional episodes, and to compare and contrast the impact of such major events as the Civil War, the Great Depression and the Civil Rights Movement on cities and towns throughout the country. Early American Newspapers is a comprehensive online resource with more than 6000 searchable newspapers from 1690-2017. Created through partnerships with the American Antiquarian Society, the Library of Congress and more than 90 other institutions, the papers come from all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Historical News Archives is a database of more than 100 newspapers, including such well-known publications as the San Francisco Chronicle, the New Orleans Times Picayune and the Miami Herald, as well as the local Norwalk Hour and Stamford Advocate. Both collections are searchable by key word for ease of use. Together they form a comprehensive digital record of American history, culture and life. “This is an amazing addition to the resources we have available to our members,” said Nancy Geary, Executive Director of the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society. “I know this digital library will spark curiosity and promote learning.
