7 Characteristics of living things (Organisms)
List 5 things that are alive-
How are these things different than a rock?
What do you think it really means to be alive?
![Page 3: Life Science Chapt2](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022020122/54b4f9d54a795945748b4569/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
7 Characteristics of living things (Organisms)
Most living things move in some way.
![Page 4: Life Science Chapt2](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022020122/54b4f9d54a795945748b4569/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
7 Characteristics of living things (Organisms)
Energy is the ability to do work and cause change
• Walking
•Talking
•Thinking
•Breathing
•Playing
•Studying
All require
energy!
Where do living organisms get their energy?
![Page 5: Life Science Chapt2](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022020122/54b4f9d54a795945748b4569/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
7 Characteristics of living things (Organisms)
Living things all grow and change. Whether talking about a person or a tree changes will take place as long as the organism is alive.
![Page 6: Life Science Chapt2](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022020122/54b4f9d54a795945748b4569/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
7 Characteristics of living things (Organisms)
Organisms respond to the environment around them. What are some common responses to your environment?
![Page 7: Life Science Chapt2](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022020122/54b4f9d54a795945748b4569/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
• Stimulus: A change in the environment that occurs and causes a reaction.
• Response: The way an organism reacts to the stimulus

7 Characteristics of living things (Organisms)
All organisms must reproduce-offspring are
the result of reproduction.
Asexual- One member of a species splits
into two
Sexual- Two members of the same species are needed

Cells are the building blocks of life

Unicellular-
An Organism that has only
one cell
Multicellular-
Organisms that have more than
one cell
Cells are the building blocks of life
Cells are the basic structure and function in all living things. Most cells are too small to be seen without a
microscope.

Review
• Living things are called organisms
• Most organisms have 7 characteristics in common: The ability to move, use energy, grow and develop, respond to their environment, reproduce, homeostasis, and are made of cells.

Review
• Organisms are made up of elements. Examples of elements found in organisms are hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen. A combination of two or more elements is a compound.
• Elements form compounds. The most common compounds found in organisms are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.
