What is a satellite?
A satellite is an object, either natural or man-made, which travels in an orbit
round another object in space.

2. Why are satellites so expensive?
3. How does a satellite produce electricity?
4. What can satellites send back to the earth?
5.Why don’t most broadcasting satellites change their positions?

1. Why is it possible for satellites to go into space?
Because when the speed of a rocket that carries a satellite up into space reaches 28,440 km/h, it can
escape the pull of the earth.
![Page 8: Lesson 54 Satellites. What was carried up into space on Oct. 15 th, 2003? Shen Zhou Ⅴ](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062314/56649efe5503460f94c1382b/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
2. Why are satellites so expensive?
Because it has to be light and it has expensive
equipment: cameras, etc.

3. How does a satellite
produce electricity?
A satellite produces electricity by using
very broad sun panels.

4. What can satellites send back to the earth?
Radio and TV programmes; signals; information and photos o
f weather conditions.
![Page 11: Lesson 54 Satellites. What was carried up into space on Oct. 15 th, 2003? Shen Zhou Ⅴ](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062314/56649efe5503460f94c1382b/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
5. Why don’t most broadcasting satellites change their positions?
Because only in this way, they are
able to connect broadcasting
stations which are a long distance
from each other.

Definition(定义)
Types
Natural satellites of the earth
An object, either natural or man-made, which travels in an orbit round another object in space, is called a satellite.
Natural satellites;Man-made satellites
The moon.It travels round the earth once every month.
Something about the man-made satellitesHow…carried up into space?

Function(功能)
By rockets.
28,440 km/h
One of the most expensive pieces of scientific equipment. The lighter, the better. It contains very expensive cameras as well as equipment for making electricity from sunshine.

People can use man-made satellites to do lots of things. When rockets _________ satellites with expensive _________ up into space, people begin to use them for different purposes. For example, we can use them for _____________. In this way, we can receive radio and TV _________ from another part of the world. We can also use __________ satellites to tell not only _______ the weather is like _____ present, but also what is _______ to happen in the _______. In this way, we can ______ ships and planes of the possible weather.

1.What was the name of the first satellite of the organization?
2. How many countries are there in this group today?
3. How can you telephone somebody on the other side of the world?
4. What was the use of special cameras?
5. What is the disadvantage of studying outer space at research stations on the earth?
It was called Early Bird.
There are now over 100 countries in this group.
With the help of a satellite you can telephone somebody on the other side of the world.
Special cameras can produce pictures showing where different metals can be found. And they can also tell the difference between healthy plants and plants that are diseased.
The disadvantage is that there is a lot of dust in the earth’s air, and the dusty air makes it difficult to get a clear picture of space.

The first satellite for telephones was sent up into space in August,1960. It measured 30 meters across. It was a simple satellite which we could not send out signals. Signals which were sent up from the earth hit the satellite and returned to the earth.
