LESSON 14: COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS (COMPOUND ADJECTIVES & ADVERBS)
Relevant Review
• Conjunctions join two or more words, phrases, or clauses.
• Coordinating conjunctions = for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
• When diagrammed, coordinating conjunctions go on straight, dotted lines
between the words, phrases, or clauses they are connecting.
• Adjectives describe nouns and pronouns.
• Adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.
Lesson
Do you remember how to diagram compound subjects, verbs, and direct objects? Good!
We'll now start diagramming compound adjectives and adverbs.
Refresher
Adjectives modify nouns and pronouns. Nouns and pronouns can perform different jobs. You’ve learned about these noun and pronoun jobs so far.
• Subject (Lesson 1) • Object of the Preposition (Lessons 9 -11) • Direct Object (Lesson 12)
Diagramming Compound Adjectives
Diagramming compound adjectives is easy! Draw a dotted, horizontal line between the adjectives that the conjunction is joining. Write the coordinating conjunction on that line.
The gray and white cat jumped.

The adjectives in the above example sentence are modifying the subject cat, but remember that adjectives can modify ANY noun or pronoun (subject, object of the preposition, direct object).
Diagramming Compound Adverbs
Guess what? Diagramming compound adverbs is similar to diagramming compound adjectives.
Draw the horizontal, dotted line between the adverbs that the conjunction is joining.
He ran happily and quickly.
It is rare to have a compound adverb modifying an adjective or adverb. For this reason, we’re only studying compound adverbs that modify verbs.
