WHERE PLANTS LIVE- ADAPTATIONS
Learning objectives:
• Habitat
• Adaptation
• Terrestrial plants
WHERE DO THEY LIVE?
A habitat is the natural home or environment of a plant,
animal, or other organism. It provides the organisms that live
there with food, water, shelter and space to survive.
For e.g- water is the natural environment /habitat of lotus
plant and land is the natural environment of mango tree.
HABITAT
ADAPTATIONS
Adaptation is the process where an organism
becomes better suited to its habitat.
Adaptation are special features that help a
plant survive in its habitat.
CLASSIFICATION OF PLANT HABITAT
❑ Land or terrestrial habitats
❑ Water or aquatic habitats
Land or terrestrial plants:
i. Plants in the plains
ii. Plants in deserts
iii. Plants in mountains
iv. Plants in heavy-rainfall areas
v. Plants along the sea coast
vi. Plants in Marshy or swampy areas
PLANTS IN THE PLAINS
• Grow in plain and flat Surface of the earth.
• Have several branches and leaves.
• Grow in warmer climate of the plains and shed their leaves in
autumn.
• E.g
Mango tree Neem tree
PLANTS IN DESERTS
• Long root system in desert plants spread and go deep into
ground to absorb the available water.
• Have spines which discourage animals from eating plants for
water.
• Leafless plants conduct photosynthesis through their green
stems.Lack of leaves helps reduce water loss.
• Waxy coating on stems and leaves help reduce water loss.
• E.g
Cactus Prickly spines
PLANTS IN MOUNTAINS
• In mountains plants are tall, straight and cone shaped.
• Have needle –like leaves which prevents too much
water loss and helps shed snow more easily.
• They are usually flowerless.
Deodar tree Pine tree
PLANTS IN HEAVY-RAINFALL AREAS
• In areas with heavy rainfall the plants are
evergreen, which means they do not lose their
leaves.
• E.g
Cotton plant Lychee plant
PLANTS IN MARSHY OR SWAMPY AREAS
• The place where the soil is very clayey and
sticky is called marshy area.It is difficult for
plants to grow in such areas as air cannot
reach the roots. To overcome this problem
plants here have breathing roots tp absorb air.
• E.g-
Mangroves
PLANTS ALONG SEA COAST
• Coconut trees grow well in these areas. They are
adapted to grow in salty water and high
rainfall. The seeds of plants growing in coastal
regions are carried from place to place or
dispersed by water.
Plants in coastal areas
WORKSHEET
Observation activity:
• Make a list of plants and trees growing in your
surroundings.
• Talk to the plants of your own choice and write a
dialogue about how they survive.
Exercise
Q. In a tropical rainforest ,where it is hot and it rains a
lot, which of these would be helpful adaptation for
plants.Also say why.
(a)Waxy leaves (b)Tips © Both of these
Q. What are the adaptations of desert plants?
