Localschoolsandcommunitygroupshavebeenbusycelebratingtheirlocalnaturereserve.Here’sasampleofwhattheyhavebeendoingtoexplorethehistoryandnaturalheritageofthisfascinatingsite.

Early historyAs low-lying land by the river, the reserve was

used as grazing marsh from the Palaeolithicera until recent decades.

The nearby streetname, West Town Road,remembers a small brick-making village thatoccupied part of the site in the 18th century.

The Severn Beach railway line runs across thepresent site. It dates from 1865 and linksAvonmouth with the centre of Bristol.

Schoolandcommunity

Modern historyAt the start of World War I, a vast‘remount’ depot was set up atShirehampton to import, train andsend horses on active service.

After World War II, part of the areawas used as a landfill site. When

this closed down in 1976, thearea’s regeneration began.

By 2003, the conservationvalue of the site had beenrecognised. Shire Greensstarted habitat managementworks, footpaths, fencing

and other improvementsworking with

Bristol City Council.

In 2010, Lamplighter’sMarsh became a local

nature reserve.

Lamplighter’s Marsh lies at the mouthof the Severn Estuary – on the flood

plain of the River Avon just above highwater level. The site is about one kmlong.

The slightly alkaline soils give rise tosemi-natural habitats including scrub,grassland and salt marsh that supportparticular wildlife communities that areunusual in this region.

What to look out for along the Yellow Brick Road ...

Coastalbirds

! Thenarrow-borderedfive spotburnet isattractedto grasslandflowers.

▹ Look out for the buzzards soaringabove you. They are searching forsmall mammals, birds and carrionto eat.

# The common bluebutterfly takes nectar fromflowers across the reserve.

Sedum worldColonies of sedum andnotable grassland plantssuch as Viper’s bugloss areabundant in summer nearthe broken-up remnants ofthe old railway line. Theycreate a good habitat forthe shy slow worm.

The MarshThe original Lamplighter’s‘Marsh’ (currently inprivate ownership), supportsa large population ofcommon reed and otherwetland plants.

The Daisy FieldThis former land fill site wasraised by tipping and capping.Despite this, the site now hostsseveral species of grasslandwildflower species such as Beeorchid and Ox-eye daisy.

This woodland strip and theroadside hedgerow areimportant for nesting birdssuch as wren, blackbird,chaffinch and blackcap.
