Parent Newsletter
Dear Parents,
It is hard to believe that we have reached the midpoint of the school
year. We are asking for your assistance as we make one final academic
push for the last days of 1st semester. Tutoring is available Monday
through Thursday from 3:30 to 5:00 in the Free State library. In addition a
Cocoa and Cram session will be held Wednesday, December 12 from 6:30
to 8:30 to help students prepare for finals.
Please check the newsletter for the semester finals schedule for
Wednesday, December 19, Thursday December 20 and Friday, December
21. On December 21, we ask that students leave the building immediate-
ly at 11:45, as the construction process will be moving inside immediately.
Students needing to make schedule corrections for 2nd semester need to
see their counselor before the winter break. Schedule corrections after
the winter break will be limited to graduation requirements.
As we enter the winter sports schedule please remember that demonstrat-
ing good sportsmanship is an essential characteristic in promoting and
development of quality sports programs.
Again thank you for supporting the many excellent programs at Free State
High school. We hope that everyone has an excellent winter break. As
students return to class on Tuesday, January 8 this is a reminder that it will
be a regular schedule day with 0 thru 7 periods, (7:00 to 3:10).
Thank you,
Myron Graber LFSHS Principal

ENTREPRENEURSHIP CLASS PROJECT
A Tradeshow took place on November 15 at the Lawrence College and Career Center for
entrepreneurship and marketing students to showcase their businesses.
On Thursday, December 13, during all lunch periods, five (5) student businesses will be
selling different beverages as the culmination of their entrepreneurship class project.
These businesses have researched the market, developed their product, decided on their
location, secured financing and promoted this event and their product. Any profit after
covering expenses and repaying bank loans will go to the new I.C.A.N. fund housed
through Lawrence Schools Foundation that covers immediate/emergency needs of
USD497 students. Please encourage your student(s) to participate by choosing to support
one of these businesses by buying their product and providing feedback.

2019 EUTIN EXCHANGE TRIP
Dear FSHS Community,
My name is Arne Scholz and I am the German teacher at LHS. I have the privilege to be the
trip chaperone of the 2019 Eutin Exchange trip.
As part of our close cooperation with our Sister City of Eutin in Germany, up to twelve high
school students from the secondary schools in Lawrence visit Eutin in the summer while 12
German high school students from Eutin come to Lawrence in the following fall. The Ameri-
can students visit Eutin for some 4 weeks in June/July and stay with the family of their ex-
change partner. They will go to a high school in Eutin and learn about German culture, his-
tory and language in a special class with their chaperone. They will take day trips to cities
like Hamburg, Lubeck and Kiel as well as the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. The program al-
so includes a 5-day trip to Berlin. This program is open to all high school students in Law-
rence. No prior German language experience is required.
In September/October the Eutin students will visit Lawrence where they will stay with their
host families and enroll in the high school of their exchange partner. The German students
will pick their own schedule upon arrival in Lawrence. They too, will go on day trips to Kan-
sas City, the Flint Hills, Topeka, etc. with their German trip chaperone.
The total cost for the trip including airfare, transportation, hotel in Berlin and food is about
$1700. Need-based scholarships are available.
There will be an informational meeting at Lawrence High School, room 305 (in the Annex),
on Thursday, December 6 at 7 p.m.
Please feel free to contact me via email at [email protected] if you have questions. I’m
looking forward to meeting you soon.
Kind regards,
Arne Scholz
