The purpose of this project was to design a package and brand for coffee. I created a brand called Inti Organic Instant Coffee. My objective for this brand was to create coffee that appeals to a fast paced, working adult lifestyle as well as a health conscious, organic lifestyle; two types of coffee that are not often seen together. This style can be seen in both materials used to create the product as well as the clean design of the logo and natural colors used.

I chose a brand, Holistic Select Dog Food, to re-design the logo and packaging as well as develop marketing strategies to increase the value of the product. I packaged the smallest version of the dog food in a box with a handle and spout for easy pour. I changed the graphics to a more modern yet vintage appeal while still allowing the product to express it’s all natural ingredients.

I created advertisements for my re-branding and re-packaging project. I created these to be a series of a nutritionally focused campaign each representing a different aspect Holistic Select offers; total digestive health, pet parents dedicated to health and nutrition, and all natural healthy ingredients. They work as a series, but also send a message across individually. The ads also display my new package design.

lauren farmerMy topic I chose for this social issue poster was child hunger. I played off the irony of contrasting a childlike image and font with the topic of malnutritioned children. The bear, who I distorted in photoshop to look “unstuffed” and malnourished represents the starving child.

lauren farmerFor this project I chose to create a how-to two magazine two page spread with the topic of how to tie a tie like a pro. My design is clean with a simple color scheme. The overall theme was to make it look like a business presentation to “tie” in with the tie theme, pardon the pun.

lauren farmerThis is a re-branding project done for Contoure Full Spectrum Spa. The salon currently displays an ongoing visual structure appealing to earthy tones, and nature-driven experience. This new system designed for Contoure incorporates these same elements, keeping a sense of calmness, soothing, and relaxation in mind.

eBook Design
lauren farmerThis project was created in dreamweaver in order to make a funcitonal eBook. My cover design represents the symbol in the story that tells the lesson of the story. I used a playful font that also played off the curve of the hair. I also handmade illustrations of other symbols seen in the story that are placed on different pages in the book.

lauren farmerThis project design was created in illustrator then converted into flash to create a working calculator for the iPhone. My design uses Bodoni font which adds playfulness to the form of the numbers. The over state turns the numbers orange and makes them larger to make it easy to understand which button you are pressing.

The theme to this stamp collection I designed is Alfred Hitchcock Movies. I chose 6 of his famous movies and took a symbol representing each movie and used it in my stamp design. I used a color scheme that flowed throughout each design and a font similar to Saul Bass’s poster designs for Alfred Hitchcock movies.
Stamp Design Collection
This stamp collection shows off some of Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest movies. Hitchcock is one of the most famous film directors of all time. He directed from the 1920s to the 1970s and was notorious for his thriller and suspense movies. This collection represents 6 famous movies: Psycho (1960), Rear Window (1959), North by Northwest (1959), Dial M for Murder (1954), The Birds (1963), and Vertigo (1958).
lauren farmerThis logo was created to be used throughout a wedding. I illustrated this line image using a drawing pad in illustrator. The car represents the focal point the client wanted in the wedding, which is holding a bride and groom as they exit their ceremony. The other images shows how the client used the logo design.
Wedding Logo Design
lauren farmerThis logo design was created for a photography company called M&M Photography. I came up with multiple designs to present to the client where they narrowed it down to one design. The chosen design is clean with a pop of color and matches with the brand of the business.

Ideation Process
lauren farmerI created this logo design through my internship at Purdue. I kept the design in a constricted form and added two symbolic elements to relate to the theme of construction and business which related to the event. This logo was used on every advertisement for the event and was exposed to most of Purdue’s campus. These pictures show how it was used on posters and the brochure.
Logo Design
lauren farmerI designed a 50 page layout during my internship for this book design that represents Liberal Arts Career Development Career Handbook. This book is posted on Purdue’s website and is made available to all Liberal Arts students. My designs reflect a magazine type layout while keeping consistant with the Purdue brand and color scheme. TRANSFERABLE
SKILLS Transferable skills are the abilities you possess that are easily adapted from one job or life experience to another. These can be acquired through work or volunteer experiences and they are easy to apply to new situations. Defining your transferable skills will help supplement your degree and résumé while helping you hone in on career options that suit your skills and interests.
How to Identify Transferable Skills1. Create a list of work experiences, extra
curricular activities, and class projects.2. Find at least three strengths developed
from each experience listed. Ask family members and past work partners to help you identify skills that they recognize in your work.
3. Use power verbs, such as those listed in the first column, to correlate each listed strength into one concise skill.
4. Keep a composite list of all skills for reference when building a résumé or applying for a job.
How to Apply Transferable SkillsScan job descriptions for qualifications the employer is seeking that directly relate to the transferable skills you have. These may not always be phrased with the same wording, but try to find a similar transferable skill of your own to apply to each qualification. This will not only help you decide whether the job is a good fit, but also help you prove to the employer that you meet their requirements. Make sure these skills are referenced in your résumé, as well as in your responses to interview questions.
Apply transferable skills to specific tasks when necessary. This is acceptable when the task is an assumed requirement for most jobs in the same field. For example, if a designer has a particular expertise in the Adobe Creative Suite, use this terminology when phrasing your transferable skills. Instead of simply stating that you “created” or “designed” a project, supplement this statement with “using Adobe InDesign” to assure an employer that you are familiar with current programs in the industry.

JOB SEARCH
INTERNET JOB SEARCH
STRATEGIES Searching for jobs via the internet has become the standard, especially for web savvy college students. Free access to the web and a plethora of resources make it the perfect playground for the up-and-coming professional. And while this can be considered a ‘good thing,’ it’s important to establish a job search strategy before entering the wide world of job posting wonder. Where do you begin? Start with the LACD website.
JOB SEARCH
Job Boards and Search Engines
The LACD Website provides an extensive list of job boards broken down by industry. Job boards like Indeed.com and Idealist.org and search engines like Google.com and Bing.com allow you to search for jobs and/or internships using key words and phrases. They also help you to find company and ‘niche’ job sites not always commonly known.
What key words do you use? Think quality over quantity here. To get the best results quickly, use key words relevant to the industry, job title, job level and geographic location you are interested in pursuing. This information, in conjuction with search word strings (word combinations), will help reduce the number of ‘junk’ results often given in a search.
Strong example: Event Coordinator position in Indianapolis, IN.
Online NetworkingOne of the most impactful trends in today’s job market is to network online. One of the most significan trends in today’s job market is to network online using sites like LinkedIn, Twitter, Flickr, etc… In today’s competitve market, if you’re not networking online, you’re out of the game. To be competitive, young professionals must now be savvy about creating and marketing a professional brand via the online professional sites.
Building your professional brand means creating a marketable identity. Here are 3 easy ways to do so:
Read and comment on blog posts made by leaders in the career area of choice Join LinkedIn groups in your target industry and respond to discussion threadsBuild your own website highlighting your talents and showcasing your work
Employers use LinkedIn and Twitter to search for matches for the skill sets and experience they need for their businesses. Both these networking sites have search features that allow employers to conduct keyword searches and find candidates that match a specific set of criteria. Employers are also using these two sites to exclusively post job openings. The postings are free and they can target savvy professionals on both sites. It’s a Win/Win situation for them -- and for you!
With the right strategy the internet job search can enhance your overall job search experience.
