Do you know? What exactly is poke?
“Poke,” pronounced 'po-keh', means “to cut crosswise into pieces” in Hawaiian. Traditionally, it's made with fresh ahi (tuna), marinated with shoyu and sesame oil (thanks to significant Asian influences), and served with limu algae. Variations include addition of other ingredients and fresh fruits, nuts and grain.
It’s unclear as to where the dish originated, but in her book The Food of Paradise: Exploring Hawaii’s Culinary Heritage, Rachel Laudan explains poke as a “local creation, melding existing Hawaiian taste for raw fish with the existent Asian, particularly Japanese taste for the same, but coming up with a new synthesis.”

Do you know? The loco moco is said to have been around since the 1940s when — according to one debated legend — a restaurant wife-owner threw something together that the hungry neighborhood kids could afford. Her husband then said, “The kids are crazy. Call it loco moco.”Another legend says it’s named after the first boy to eat one; he was nicknamed Loco.
Whatever its origins, the loco moco is the surfers' cure to their raging appetite after a long day out at sea. It’s been called a gastronomical monstrosity and a cultural emblem.

Do you know? Why do Hawaiians love Spam so much?!
In times of war, food preservation and devising strategies to ensure food can be easily stored makes sound logic - Hawaiians got creative and came up with many ways to eat Spam; eventually, this humble little item made its mark in the cuisine and became an indispensible feature of Hawaiian food to this day.
I guess you could say we spammed Spam.

Do you know?Shave ice is a bigggg thing in Hawaii to be taken seriously. And no, it's no grammatical error - Hawaiians say 'shave ice' or 'ice shave'.
Shave ice traces its history to Japan, where it is known as 'kakigōri' and dates back to the Heian Period. It enjoyed world-wide popularity after Japanese plantation workers immigrated to the Hawaiian islands and took their traditional dessert with them, creating shave ice from large blocks of ice using Japanese swords which were family heirlooms.
Cool, huh?

Do you know?Originating from Polynesian mythology and legends, the Tikis have existed across the Pacific Islands since ancient times.
Among the various Polynesian cultures, each having their own account of the origin of things, the Hawaiians describe the first man to be Kumuhonua, who was made by Hawaiian deities mixing red earth from the four corners of the earth with saliva, and the first woman was made from one of his ribs.
