Cloud Computing Defined
(U.S. National Institute of Standard of Technology)
Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. This cloud is composed of five essential characteristice, three service models, and four deployment models.
Characteristics:
On Demand Self-Service
Broad Network Access
Resource Pooling/Sharing
Rapid Elasticty
Measured Service
Open Source Dominated (Open Stack, Hadoop)
Service Models
Infrastructure as a Serivce (IaaS)
Platform as a Service (PaaS)
Software as a Serivce (SaaS)
Deplyment Models:
Public Cloud
Private Cloud
Hybrid Cloud
Banks, and other financial sevices providers, have been doing some aspects of cloud computing for a long time but the enabling technologies have improved largely through open source (community) driven efforts.
5 SWIFT Latin America Regional Conference 2014
THE GROWING NEED FOR THE CLOUD
67% of IT budgets slashed in 2009
85% of computing capacity is idle
70% of IT budget spent maintaining legacy
infrastructure, not delivering new capabilities
50% of CIOs say they're understaffed
46% of IT execs say meeting SLAs
“more or much more” difficult and costly
14% annual decline in IT execs who say
they are becoming “more strategic” to their organization
Data from Industry sources
I.T. infrastructure is at a breaking point
6 SWIFT Latin America Regional Conference 2014
WHAT DOES THE CLOUD REALLY MEAN TO YOU
ENDING WASTE The old way:
Overbuying computing capacity, based on infrequently used peak demand.
Purchasing, installing, and provisioning a server for each new request in the organization. Maintaining it for years to come.
Responding slowly to business opportunities or threats because it takes a long time to add or change apps and infrastructure.
Having to manage and support many different infrastructure platforms.
7 SWIFT Latin America Regional Conference 2014
SEIZING OPPORTUNITY
The new way:
Buying computing capacity as you need it, when you need it
Responding to demand for new services in minutes, not months.
Meeting SLAs by using all available computing resources to meet users' requirements.
Efficiently managing the diverse systems and platforms you already have, without having to replace them.
Using IT to drive innovation and respond to changes in the business.
WHAT DOES THE CLOUD REALLY MEAN TO YOU
More than 60% of banks worldwide will process most of their transactions in the cloud by 2016 – Gartner, October 2013

Cloud Computing In the News....
Big Price Reductions in Public Cloud Space:
March 26, 2014 – (Bloomberg) “Amazon said...that prices for its S3 storage service, which is used by customers including Netflix Inc., will be reduced by about 51 percent. The prices of other services will be lowered on average by 28 percent to 61 percent, depending on the product.”
Traditional IT Vendors Responding in Non-Traditional Ways:
April, 29, 2014 (IDG News Service) - After initially slamming the cloud concept as meaningless hype, Oracle has introduced a Solaris update that includes a distribution of the OpenStack cloud management platform, promising an easier time for Oracle customers running mixed cloud environments.
May, 15 2014 (IDG News Service) - IBM today announced at the OpenStack Summit that it is expanding its support of open technologies by providing advanced OpenStack® integration and cloud virtualization and management capabilities across IBM's entire server portfolio with IBM Cloud Manager with OpenStack.
May 15, 2014 - IDG News Service - Joining Red Hat, Oracle, Canonical and others, Hewlett-Packard is releasing its own distribution of the OpenStack cloud hosting software.

Infrastructure as a Service
Innovation Powered by Open Source: OpenStack as a “Game-Changer”
“While we believe that OpenStack continues to enhance functionality and is being used in a number of industries as companies look to deploy more flexible infrastructure, our sense is that the vast majority remains in test and development environments. This pattern is akin to the way Linux was adopted, before the shift to running mission-critical applications or workloads on the technology.”
William Blair Report – May 19, 2014 (Commentary following OpenStack Summit)
The OpenStack project mission is to produce the ubiquitous Open Source Cloud Computing platform that will meet the needs of public and private clouds regardless of size, by being simple to implement and massively scalable.
Projects:Compute (Nova), Object Storage (SWIFT), Block Storage (Cinder), Networking (Neutron) Data Processing (Shara), Image Service (Glance), Identity (Keystroke), Dashboard (Horizon), Orchestration (Heat), Database Service (Trove).
