Alumni Meet 2014

Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru inaugurated the Bengaluru Chapter of the
Amrita Alumni Association on Saturday, the 2nd August, 2014 under the banner of „Alumni
Meet-2014‟.
The Programme was graced by the Campus Director Br. Dhanraj, Associate Dean &
Head Dr. Rakesh S.G. and Chair of the Alumni Association, Bengaluru Chapter Ms. Supriya
M., Assistant Professor, Department of CSE. The meet saw an attendance of around 60 Alumni.
While most of the alumni were physically present on the occasion, few of them formed part of
the Meet through Skype. The programme gathered the Chairmen and Heads of various
Departments, faculty and staff members.
The programme began with lighting of the lamp followed by the prayer. A formal
welcome address was given by Ms. Supriya M., Chair of the Alumni Association. Director
Br. Dhanraj blessed the gathering through his words and stressed on the importance of humility
in one‟s life. Associate Dean Dr. Rakesh S.G. apprised the alumni of the progress, changes &
extensions in the domain of academics, co-curricular & extra-curricular activities, student
exchange programmes with Universities abroad etc. He also took this opportunity to invite the
alumni community for the Meets, which are planned to be conducted on the first Saturday in the
month of August every year.
The meet included a Panel discussion on the topic, “IT Boom-Growing Pressure on the
Stakeholders”. Among the alumni who actively participated in this public exchange of ideas on
the topic were Mr. Thejas Gupta, Mr. Navdeep, Mr. Bharath Hebbar, Mr. Nayanar Dikshit,
Mr. Sriram and Ms. Vinela. The Panel Discussion was moderated by Mr. A D. Balakrishnan of
the CIR Department.
The later part of the event was devoted to recreation with cultural activities. The current
students of the School presented few cultural events including dance and music for their seniors.
The cultural events were followed by high-tea.

Some of the alumni visited their respective departments. The HoDs of each department
were happy to take them through the progress and activities. During their interactions, the
alumni came up with many suggestions regarding the syllabus of courses, laboratory
development etc.
The Alumni were, in general, very appreciative of the existing campus facilities and also
were willing to extend help in terms of conducting sensitization sessions for their juniors,
arranging for invited talks by industry experts etc. They appreciated the efforts put in by the
School in making this initiative happen.
The Alumni Meet closed on a very emotional note with the vote of thanks proposed by
Mr. Pramod R., faculty from the Department of ME.
Everyone parted with a resolve to visit again and with a promise to make sure that there
is more number of participation in the next Meet.
National Workshop on ‘Computer Networks

A 2-Day Workshop on „Computer Networks and Network Simulation / Emulations using
NS3‟ was held on 2nd and 3rd of August, 2014. The main aim of the workshop was to provide
the participants with a comprehensive understanding of Network Simulation Techniques for
Next Generation Networks & Mobile Communication Systems. Topics covered in the seminar
included an Overview of Network Simulation Concepts, Discrete Event Simulation
Mechanisms, Essential Tools for Simulation & Design Choices, Simulation and Emulation
Architectures, Usage Examples and Configurations for Wired & Wireless Network Simulation
Systems. The seminar concluded with a discussion on trends and future directions in Network
Engineering & Research. The resourse person for the program was Mr. Deepak Nadig Anatha,
Director, Solutt Corporation, Bengaluru. There were around 50 participants.
Kalakriti 2014

Kalakriti 2014, the talent fest for the first year students, was organized by Amrita School
of Engineering, Bengaluru on 16th August, 2014. Every year Kalakriti, which is conducted in
the beginning of the semester, provides a platform for the new entrants to showcase their talents.
MADNITE, the melange of sophisticated and graceful acts of songs, dance and drama
put together by seniors on the eve of Kalakriti set the standards for the performances during
kalakriti.
The eventful day dawned with the lighting of the lamp led by Chair - Amritadhara,
followed by an invocation song. There was a sense of excitement in the air and the campus was
vibrant with seniors encouraging the freshers to participate in every possible event to exhibit
their talents. Fun filled events like Music, Dance, Drama, Quiz, Treasure Hunt and Laser Tag
attracted a large number of participants. The group activities also projected the co-ordination
among the first year students who in a fortnight‟s time could conceive their own team and
eventually stage such wonderful performances. Students in great numbers participated in sports
events like Crazy Cricket, Football, Chess and Badminton. The most awaited and flagship event,
“The Icon” was won by Mr. Raunaq Kamra of ECE department.
Freshers‟ voices on Kalakriti Rahul of CSE in an excited tone, “It is a “breath-taking event!”
Shamika of ECE said, “A unique way of extracting talent from first year students.”
Sri Krishna Janmashtami Celebrations

Sri Krishna Janmashtami, the annual celebration of birth of Lord Krishna was celebrated
with gaiety & grandeur in the campus on 20th August, 2014. The idols of Lord Krishna in
various forms were decorated and put up in the reception area. Rangoli competition took place
where many students participated and drew various forms of Lord Krishna and adorned the
same with attractive colours. The programme started off with a pooja and recitation of Krishna
Ashtothara, followed by signing of a Bhajan by Director Br. Dhanraj and dramatic enactments
covering some aspects of the life of Lord Krishna by the students. The friendship of Sudhama
and Krishna was also enacted. The celebrations concluded with the „Uriyadi‟ / „Dahi Hundi‟,
which was organized near the boys hostel, wherein the boys enthusiastically formed human
towers to reach and break the pots. Prasadam was distributed to all the staff and students at the
end of the programme.
Kathakali Performance - SPIC-MACAY

Amrita School of Engineering, Bengaluru hosted the SPICMACAY „Kathakali‟
performance by the Sadana Troupe - Sadanam Balakrishnan, Kalamandalam Narayana
Nambiar, Sadanam Bhasi, Sadanam Vijay, Sadanam Ramakrishnan, Sadanam Devadas and
Sadanam Srinivas - on Monday, the 25th August, 2014. The programme was organized in
Amriteswari Hall.
The performance by the artists was truly mesmerizing. The attractive make-up of
characters, their elaborate costumes, gestures and the body movements enthralled the audience.
The musicians and accompanying instrumentalists greatly added to the energy of the dance.

Researchers' Day
A Department-level Research Scholars' meet was held on 19th August, 2014. The event
was organized for all the research scholars with an objective to share and discuss their research
topics. The meet included presentations by scholars on their research work. All the research
scholars attended the meet.
Dr. Bharat Jayaraman, Chair PGP, Amrita University & Professor at University of
Buffalo attended this meet. The Meet started with an opening address by Dr. Bharat Jayaraman.
This was followed by presentations by the scholars and interactions.

A 3-Day “Train the Trainer” Workshop on Business Intelligence co-hosted by Infosys
Limited, Bangalore and MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore was held between 5th
& 7th August, 2014 at M S Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore. This workshop which
is a part of the Campus Connect initiative of Infosys was attended by Dr. Rakesh N. and Ms.

The objective of this workshop was to enable the faculty of the institutions, which are
partnering with Infosys and other Corporates under Campus Connect initiative, to get a hands-
on experience on how to orient the students to put into practical use the knowledge gained from

Dr. Dhanesh G. Kurup arranged a demonstration and talk on "Software Defined Radio" on
22nd August 2014 at ASE, Bangalore. The event was conducted by Agile SDR Pvt. Ltd., a
Bangalore based company offering products competitive with similar NI products. The talk
was arranged for faculty members and students.
Prof. S. Ravishankar & Dr. Navin Kumar, in association with IEEE Bangalore Office
organized the event “IEEE Awareness and Membership Drive” on 27th August 2014 at ASE,
Bangalore. The event was organized for faculty and students. It gave a brief awareness about
IEEE current activities and procedure to join, cost etc.
Dr. Navin Kumar presented a Seminar titled "The New Emerging Technology: Visible Light
Communication in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)", to all the faculty members of
the Department of ECE on 2nd August 2014 at ASE, Bangalore.
Dr. Vamsi Krishna Tumuluru presented a Seminar titled “Demand response in smart grids”
on 16th August 2014 which was attended by all the faculty members of the department. The
Demand response is very critical for the smart grid. It is changing the way the grid used to
operate. While demand response was offered by large consumers traditionally, that
convention is changing today with the inclusion of small consumers (e.g., residential loads
like HVAC, EVs, etc.) through load aggregators. The presentation gave a broad overview of
demand response; highlight the research opportunities and few insights into his research.
Dr. P.R. Vaya presented a Seminar titled "Origin of Concepts"on 30th August 2014, which
was attended by all the faculty members of the department.
Amrita Center for International Programme (ACIP) Coordinators, Ms. Sunitha R. and Ms.
Priya B.K. arranged a talk on “Electronic Materials Used for Flexible Devices” by Dr. Shadi
Dayesh, on 7th August, 2014 at ASE, Bengaluru. The talk was telecasted trough A-VIEW
and was arranged for the faculty members and students of the Department of ECE. Around
55 students attended the event.

The game show attributed as „ECIF‟ was conducted as a part of Kalakriti 2014. Participants
in a team of 3-4 were required to solve number puzzles and riddles within a stipulated
amount of time. Two teams competed against each other and the team solving maximum
number of puzzles was victorious. A total of 22 teams participated and enjoyed the event.
ECIF in collaboration with SANKHYA put forth „QUANTUM QUEST‟ as a part of
Kalakriti 2014. „QUANTUM QUEST‟, a gaming event in which the circuits were designed
by the higher semester students received a huge response by the participants. A total of 51
students were part of this gaming event which can act as a substitute for shooting games in
future.

Mr. Akanksh B. (VII Semester, Department of ECE) and Mr. Raghunandan N.V. (VII
Semester, Department of ECE) were selected at the University level, to attend an event

Signal Processor.
Technical Dumb Charades and Quiz
Technical Dumb Charades and Quiz was organized by the Vidyuth forum members on
21st August, 2014. Nearly 80 students took part in the event.
Orientation of MPLAB through knowledge sharing
An interactive session was organized between 3rd & 4th year students of EEE to
understand PIC16F778A microcontroller and programming the same using MPLAB software.
The students Ms. Sneha, Ms. Srilekha, Ms. Kavya, Mr. Madan, Mr. Praveen and Mr. Balaji
from the 4th year explained about the software and its applications.

A technical talk on “Basics of Machining” was organized on 6th August, 2014.
Mr. Prasanna, Head Training, Guhring Private limited was the resource person. He delivered
a talk on the machining processes and its application in tool cutting industries. It was an
interactive session with loads of videos to aid visualization on the topic. The students had an
excellent insight to what the cutting tool industries do, challenges faced by them and how
they overcome it. The seminar was attended by 120 students belonging to S5 & S7.
A talk on “Digital Solutions in PLM” was organized on 19th August, 2014. The programme
was organized at Krishna Hall. 50 students of S5, attended the same. The resource person
was Mr. G.V. Ravi Kumar, Head-Training and EDS Technologies Private Limited, who
gave an excellent insight into the topic and shared his experience at Ashok Leyland Pvt Ltd.
and at EDS Technologies. He explained how PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) is being
revolutionized by using digital solutions like CATIA by saving time, money and effort and
why it is important in today‟s industries. The session was highly interactive with students
involving in the discussion.
A talk by a delegation from Pro/E Creo CAD Training Center was organized for the students
of 140 S3 on the topic "Designing on PTC Creo" by CMS Technologies Pvt. Ltd at E-
Learning Hall. The students were given an insight on the advantages of CMS-Pro\E course
and how it has been developed to cater to Engineering students seeking to improve their
employment prospects by improving their skills and build their career through higher
productivity and technical expertise. The talk was organized on 20th August 2014.

Dr. K.V. Nagaraja delivered an invited talk on “Introduction to Finite Element Method” on 1st August 2014 in a one-week Faculty Development Program, “Analytical and Numerical Techniques in Applied Mathematics and Engineering”, organized by the Department of Mathematics, Malnad College of Engineering, Hassan during 28th July - 2nd August 2014. The workshop was sponsored by TEQIP-II (Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme-II).
Dr. V. Kesavulu Naidu delivered an invited talk on “FEM using Mathematica” on 1st August, 2014 in a One-Week Faculty Development Programmee, “Analytical and Numerical Techniques in Applied Mathematics and Engineering”, organized by the Department of Mathematics, Malnad College of Engineering, Hassan, Karnataka during 28th July - 2nd August, 2014. The workshop was sponsored by TEQIP-II (Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme-II).

„Battery Research Laboratory‟ was inaugurated by Director. Br. Dhanraj and Associate
Dean Dr. Rakesh S.G. on 11th August, 2014. The new lab is equipped with Electrochemical
Workstation and Hot Air Oven. The funding for the instruments was obtained from Vision
Group of Science and Technology, Government of Karnataka under their „Seed Money for
Young Scientist for Research‟ Scheme. Our college management has sponsored
Rs. 1,50,000.00 towards the purchase of the instrument and has allotted a room in 2nd Floor
of „B‟-Block. The lab is equipped to measure Current-Voltage, Current-Time, Charge-
Discharge, Impedance etc., of solid samples. A wet-lab is also available for preparation of
samples.
