Kinesiology Research Group• Goals

– Interdisciplinary• Humanities• Behavioral and Social Sciences• Life Sciences

– Student Researchers

What other questions or outcome measures can be integrated with bone strength measurements to create an

interdisciplinary project?

My Question to the Group:

Page 9: KRG (Kinesiology Research Group) Inaugural Meeting

PERIPHERAL QUANTITATIVE COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY

(PQCT)

Page 10: KRG (Kinesiology Research Group) Inaugural Meeting

Clinical Measures• DXA

– Dual Energy X-ray Absoptiometry– An areal density (not volumetric)– Correlated with bone strength

A DXA test measures your bone mineral density and compares it to that of an established norm or standard to give you a score.

Areal NOT Volumetric BMD

Clinical Measures

• Peripheral quantitative computed tomography

• Distribution of bone is very important

Volumetric BMDAND Bone Structure

Outcome Measures (Bone)

Other Measurements1. Muscle Density

1. a surrogate of intermuscular adiposity

2. Fat Density

3. Muscle to Fat Ratio

4. Marrow Density1. Bone Marrow Adipose Tissue

To Do

• Establish protocol– Research– Community outreach

• Optimize adjustments and subject position

• Develop and Organize Potential Studies– Compare athletes with different loading backgrounds

• IRB
