as free.

It was supposed to be
temporary. But the Soviet
Union never gave up control

divided into North and

As part of the cease-fire agreement, North and South Korea were separated by a 2½
mile wide strip of land where no one lives. It is called the DMZ: Demilitarized zone.

North Korean soldiers have dug at least 4 tunnels underneath the DMZ. Three
were found in the 1970s.

There's now a series of concrete walls blocking the tunnel where it runs under
the DMZ.
http://korea1.travellerspoint.com/s6/
Each wall has cameras on both sides so South Korea and North Korea can see if anyone messes with them.
![Page 28: Korea and the “Cold War”](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081418/5697bf9a1a28abf838c91f56/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Wide enough for tanks, this more than 30,000 troops
per hour could move through this tunnel. There’s even a “room” for troops to
assemble.

It is hard for outsiders to get permission to visit the North.
