SHRINE CLUBSSome members may not be aware of the presence of
local shrine clubs in Koraland. Shrine clubs for years have been a way to further extend the fellowship of our fraternity. Clubs are localized to certain communities, making it more convenient for our nobles and their ladies to gather and socialize on a more frequent basis. Membership is open to any noble; you are welcome to join any shrine club you wish regardless of your home location. Shrine clubs generally meet in the Fall, Winter, and Spring, moving functions outside for the summer months. Membership is extended to brand new nobles for no dues assessment during their first calendar year as a shriner. Many newer members do not get the opportunity to experience all that the fraternity has to offer, these club meetings are a great way to meet fellow nobles and ladies.
This article should stand as an open invitation to all nobles not currently a member of a shrine club to seek out their local group, contact the person listed in this article and join in the camaraderie. See page 2 for a list of active clubs and contacts.

FROM THE RECORDER’S DESK………by John R. Knox, P.P., Recorder
Greetings Nobles:As we rapidly approach the end of the
Shrine Year, I can truly say “Time Flies……especially as one gets older”. Serving in the office of Recorder for Kora Shriners is an honor
and privilege. Our Nobles and Ladies are committed to serving the organization in support of the fraternal activities, and in the
FROM THE DESK OF THE POTENTATE

MEMBERSHIP RAMBLINGSBy Paul Gardner, Membership Chair
Parade season may be over, but there is still much to keep us very busy. Your Membership Committee has been hard at work, and at our Fall Ceremonial we welcomed six new Nobles to our Kora family. We also recognized several nobles who have dedicated 50 years of service to Kora. As in the past, we will continue to have Cold Sands ceremonies when needed, so that new nobles can become active as soon as possible.
Membership numbers are looking good for the year so far. It looks like we will exceed the numbers for last year, not only in creations, but also restorations. Projected NPD suspensions are below last year as well. There are still quite a few Nobles who are “lost in the desert.” We haven’t heard from these folks and they are at risk of being suspended. Perhaps you are aware of one? Encourage them to contact the membership committee or the Kora office.
There are still tickets available for the Membership committee’s “Rifle Raffle.” You could be the lucky winner of a Henry Shriner’s Tribute edition .22 rifle. Don’t be left out! See a committee member or the Kora Office to get your tickets. Whether you are a shooter or not, this is a really nice addition to any Shriner’s collection. Since only 300 tickets will be sold, odds of winning are pretty good.
Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder’s membership campaign is picking up speed. “Just One.” A simple but powerful idea drives this initiative: If every current Shriner commits to recruiting or restoring “Just One” noble to our temple, the ranks of our brotherhood will swell tremendously.
Back in January when I was tasked with the Potentates position again I knew this would be a challenge. I had been away from the Kora Divan and units for the past 4 years and I really didn’t know what to expect. I am happy to say that throughout this year I have seen great strides made within Kora. The units and clubs, the event committees, and all the ladies have come together as a community. This is how Kora should be and by coming together as a unit, many more things can be achieved.
All the events so far this year have ended on a positive note and I know this will continue throughout the coming years. Your incoming Divan has proven to be capable and willing to support all the Nobles of Kora. Please welcome them and use them as a resource.
Lady Liz and I would like to thank you for all your support and for making our job easier. We have all worked hard this year and it shows. I would like to again thank you all for a great 2019. Best of luck to you all your endeavors.
FaithfullyIll. Richard Hersom 2015 & 2019
support of our philanthropy, Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, as evidenced by results of our fundraising activities throughout the year. Great job!
One important aspect of our ability to continue to have successful events is always to be working on MEMBERSHIP. Imperial Potentate Jeffrey Sowder has focused on membership with his “JUST ONE” campaign – if each member brought in “JUST ONE” new candidate, think of the positive growth we could experience. It is entirely possible and doable.
I would urge all Nobles and Ladies to be active in the upcoming events – the Feztival of Trees – both in Lewiston and a new satellite location at Sunday River Ski Resort in December, as well as the end of season and end of the year Unit and Club events.
Invite a Master Mason to one of these events and let him see first hand that ours is a fraternity of fun, fellowship, and philanthropy.
A final note, please be sure to submit your dues payments before the end of the year. You will need your 2020 Membership Card to participate in events in the New Year – and if you have not yet submitted your 2019 payments, please do so as soon as possible. If there are extenuating circumstances that may impact your immediate payment, please contact the Recorder – there are means available to assist Nobles to get through a challenge. Don’t hesitate to let me know – we do not want to lose any Noble for non-payment. Assisting a Brother in need is a vital tenet of our organization.
Stay safe and stay healthy in the upcoming Holiday Season!Fraternally, John R. Knox, P.P., Recorder

Noble Todd Burnett and Rob McKinley, HPP, Lady Doreen and Noble Skip Harvey, Noble Dennis Weightman and Lady Patricia
and Noble Forrest Genthner and Lady Molly. Welcome!
September 27 was a special night for 6 new Nobles who joined the ranks of Kora Temple. The Kora Kraftsmen and the Second Section conducted both the First and Second Sections of our Ceremonial Ritual for the 6 new Nobles. Illustrious Rick Hersom opened the hall for the first portion of the Initiation to the assembled Nobles and Ladies, which was well received by the guests. The hall was then secured for Nobles only as the work progressed into the signs, words and tokens, as well as the Second Section.
The new Nobles joining us are: Carlton “Skip” Harvey and Lady Doreen, Dennis Weightman and Lady Patricia, Bruno Salazar-Perea and Lady Clarisa, Todd Burnett, David Gleason, and Forrest Genthner and Lady Molly.
All the new members and their ladies expressed how welcoming the Nobility was for the evening. They also enjoyed watching the several 50 year members receive their special recognition. We are looking forward to these new Nobles and their Ladies as they become involved in the activities and events we have to offer.
$$ Pot Of Gold $$ The 2019 Divan has decided to do a pot of gold starting with the April stated meeting. That evening each noble will be given a ticket, at some point during the evening we’ll draw a winning ticket. A lucky noble could go home with a crisp $100.00 bill. But, if we draw a blank ticket, it rolls over to next
stated meeting which would be worth $200.00. Every stated meeting we’ll add $100.00 to the pot if no winner is picked. But you must attend stated meetings to get a ticket. Let us all bring the fun back and keep Kora strong. Good luck to all.

SHRINERS HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN BOSTON
Kenia's story
Kenia, 21, came to the Boston Shriners Hospital from El Salvador when she was only 12 years old after suffering severe burns from an accident involving loose wires at the mall. Even though it was many years ago, she remembers the event and the experiences that followed quite vividly.
Upon her arrival at the hospital, Kenia was rushed into surgery for an emergency amputation of her arm. Her mother remained glued to her side the whole time. “Of course, as mothers are, she tried to protect me and wrapped a blanket around me, so I couldn’t see [my amputated arm]. But when they moved me from one bed to the other, the sheet fell off and I saw myself. So in the beginning, I didn’t want anyone to talk or look at me — only my mom,” Kenia shared. Kenia felt she would be ostracized as a result of her injury.
Kenia’s mother was also severely impacted by the accident, as her sadness made her almost unrecognizable to her daughter. Kenia’s bravery, however, kept them both strong through the journey. Another supportive figure in this difficult time was Kenia’s doctor, Joseph Upton, M.D. Dr. Upton was there every step of the way during her treatment. Every time she would cry, he would find a way to reassure and comfort her.
“I have really developed and progressed since the accident. I didn’t think I’d be able to live in the same way, or do the things I loved anymore like basketball or dance. I stopped riding my bike. I didn’t think I’d be able to drive on my own, put on makeup, or dress myself. But now, I can do all of that,” said Kenia. Relearning and adjusting to functioning was a challenge, but with practice and

her support system at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston, she has grown stronger than ever.
Having just completed her first year of college, she reflects on how receiving a prosthetic changed her life. Even though she’s only 21, Kenia has many big dreams for the future, including working at a hospital so she can one day help other children reach their goals and progress through treatment, just like she did.
“From the bottom of my heart, I’m so grateful for everyone at Shriners,” Kenia said. “They returned my life back to me. At first I couldn’t walk, and now I can. I came here with my body incomplete, and they fixed and reconstructed me.”
SPRINGFIELD HOSPITAL HAPPENINGSA Valuable Part of the Team
Paws is the lovable canine mascot for the Valley Blue Sox, a New England Collegiate Baseball League team based in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Always a fan favorite, he never shies away from a photo opportunity or chance to dance. But fans may not realize that the person bringing Paws to life at many home games is Irvin, a 14-year-old with cerebral palsy.
When Irvin was diagnosed at age 3, his family brought him from Puerto Rico to the United States in search of the best care
for his condition. He came to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Springfield, located in Massachusetts.
“When he began treatment as a patient in the neuromuscular clinic, Irvin had limited movement on the right side of his body,” said Irvin’s mom, Isabel. “Bracing, physical therapy and participation in the hospital’s BFit power-based exercise and cycling programs improved his mobility and gave him the confidence and endurance he needed to pursue mascot acting,
which is very physically demanding.” Irvin admits that the job of mascot isn’t easy. “It can be hard
to wear the costume for long periods of time while dancing and performing,” he said. “But the best part is having the opportunity to interact with people of all ages and entertain them, and making the audience a part of my mascot world.”
Chris Weyant, general manager of Valley Blue Sox, explained that Irvin is a valuable part of the team. “Irvin is the definition of a team player, always willing to help at the ballpark at every turn,” he said. “The job of being a professional mascot is not an easy one, but he is always able to leave Blue Sox fans with a memorable experience when they meet Paws.”

When 18-year-old Chloe, a longtime patient of Shriners Hospitals for Children, saw the Barbie® Fashionista™ #121 doll with a prosthetic leg, she was more than excited. “I really was like oh my gosh, oh my gosh, finally a doll representing that segment of the population!”
As a teen with a prosthetic leg, Chloe didn’t have a doll that looked like her while growing up, so she knew this would mean a lot to others with limb differences. She decided she wanted to collect as many of the dolls as she could for other kids at Shriners
Hospitals for Children — Springfield in Massachusetts, where she has received prosthetic services since she was a toddler.
Chloe’s mom, Cindy, took to social media to ask friends and family to purchase the dolls as they found them, offering to pay. The request went viral and eventually Barbie herself got word of their efforts and replied to a tweet from Chloe’s brother who shared the story on Twitter. “The world needs #MoreRoleModels like Chloe. Sending a little something your way, @shrinershosp,” said the Tweet from Barbie. Donations poured in, filling Chloe’s dining room. No one asked to be reimbursed.
On Monday, Chloe and her mom delivered more than 400 of these special Barbie dolls – collected through family and friends – to the Springfield Shriners Hospital. Mattel, Inc., maker of Barbie, sent an additional 200 dolls to the hospital. Chloe was able to present one of the dolls to a fellow patient during her visit, and she says she hopes her donation will help other kids and teens with limb differences feel more confident.
SPRINGFIELD HOSPITAL HAPPENINGSShriners Hospitals for Children receives hundreds of Barbie dolls
with prosthetic legs from teen patient and Mattel
The donated dolls will serve as tools in therapeutic education and medical play for kids facing amputation – and their siblings – to help explain their situation, says Brock McConkey, CPO, manager, Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services (POPS) — Northeast, LLC. McConkey is the prosthetist who has fabricated and fitted Chloe with her legs for most of her life, and the person she says inspired her to make the donation.
This generous gift will be shared with Shriners Hospitals for Children’s 16 POPS locations around the U.S., where our teams design and customize orthotics and prosthetic devices that are tailored to the unique needs of each patient.
We are very grateful to Chloe, her mom, and the friends and families who supported these efforts, and to Mattel for their donation and their inclusive range of dolls to inspire kids like Chloe.
National Patient Ambassador Visits Springfield Shriners HospitalThe Springfield Shriners Hospital welcomed
Madelyn, one of the 2019-2020 National Patient Ambassadors for Shriners Hospitals for Children and her family to our facility on August 1. Madelyn is an aspiring occupational therapist attending Maryville University in St. Louis, Missouri, and had the opportunity to shadow Mary Ellen Brown, one of our OTs, during a session. Madelyn had a blast interacting with patients, and they learned a lot from each other!
The family loved meeting staff and patients throughout the course of their tour, and said that although they have been to 10 other locations, Springfield, MA is by far their favorite and most memorable!

Thank You
Our Committee would like to thank everyone who helped make the 2019 Kora Kare for Kids Ride-In and BBQ Competition a huge success. We especially thank the Hillbillies for organizing a fun corn hole tournament and bringing the train and outhouse for rides around the grounds, the York county Shrine club for cooking some awesome turkey legs and the Kora Brew Club did a great job with the Friday night chicken dinner. The Kora ATV club organized a great trail ride for the riders while the Widows Sons Grand Chapter led an awesome Motorcycle ride and the Log Rollers organized the Car Show. Also a big thank you to Amy Doyle for capturing all the fun with over 1500 great photos! It was so awesome to see so many Units, Clubs, and Nobles working together, having fun, and helping kids for this Shriners Hospital fundraiser!
One of the highlights was certainly Kechi Okwuchi, her powerful story of recovery and her very talented singing voice was a very special treat that we all will surely never forget. There were so many wonderful parts of the weekend that all enjoyed, but one of the best parts was our Kids BBQ contest with six Shriners Hospital patients who teamed up with Professional BBQ Pit Masters to compete in the kids Turkey burger contest. It was a great positive experience for both the patients and the pro teams!

It is a fall night in October and the trees were beautiful today. Anne and I drive to Augusta this afternoon to look at the foliage. Kora had a very busy summer and early fall and a lot of successes. As we move towards
the Election of Officers on December 7, 2019, it is also a time for us to reflect on the past and look forward to the future of Kora Shrine.
It is also a time in which change happens and this year is no different. With the changes of members of the Divan, there will also be new Directors of Units and Clubs for 2020. I want to thank the Directors for 2019. For those stepping down, I thank you for your support of Kora Shrine, some of you for many years.
As many of you may know, I announced in the Fall Sands, that I would be stepping down as Unit Colonel at the end of this year. I want to thank the many Nobles, Directors, and Divan members past and present, that have made my experience as Unit Colonel very rewarding. As a member of Kora Shrine since 1982, I have had many rewarding experiences as a Shriner of Kora Temple. Being Unit Colonel although can be very time consuming, I do not regret a minute. It is not my intention to simply not be around at Kora Temple, but rather to offer some of my time and talent to other areas within Kora Shrine. After all isn’t that what we as Shrine-Masons are supposed to do.
It is not my responsibility to select a replacement, but I would be remised if I did not thank Noble Mike Higgins and Noble Bob Doyle, both of whom served Kora Shrine as Lt. Colonels and did a fantastic job during my tenure. I would also like to thank my wife Anne who on many occasions supported me during the last 7 years as Unit Colonel. I know Anne would want me to thank both Pat and Amy for their friendship during this period of time.
We have much to be proud of here at Kora Shrine. I think it is important for every Noble to look at how they have supported Kora Shrine and to commit to even more support in 2020. As the Unit Colonel, I know all to well the significant roles that Units and Clubs play in the success of Kora Shrine and I want to wish all of you well in 2020.
I have asked all Unit Directors to resign their positions before the Election of Officers meeting. This will allow those that want to be considered for a leadership position of a Unit to communicate that to the Chief Rabban their desire or recommendation to whom should take over the Unit.
There will not be a Stated meeting in January prior to the Annual Meeting.
On January 11, 2020 at the Annual Meeting, I would ask that this year like those in the past, that all Units honor Ill. Potentate Rick Hersom with a large attendance of Unit Members on the floor in the Ceremonial Hall in the afternoon. This is also an opportunity for Unit/Club Members to share with others all the work and donations that you have made to Kora Shrine and our hospitals during the year. Please make every effort to have your parade uniform on, as we honor Rick one last time.
As we move into the Holiday Season, Anne & I and Lt. Colonel Bob & Amy Doyle wish you all a Marry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Well the parade season has all but wrapped up, it has at least for us. After 15 wonderful parades this year, we have begrudgingly stowed away the trikes for the winter. Reflecting on the year it really is truly amazing how much we have learned, and how much fun we’ve had in the process. Our first practice we struggled to maintain control let alone coordinate any maneuvers. But countless hours of seat time and the unerring dedication from our members gave us the confidence to start our first parade with two tires sideways.... That’s a good thing, trust me . We are not the same group we were back in May. After a while it becomes second nature and you develop a feel for these machines. Every new member to a motorized unit, I’m sure goes through this process of figuring things out. We had 6 guys all figuring it out for the first time, what an adventure!

CRAZY COPSby William Brochu, Scribe
Hello all. Well it is safe to say Summer 2019 is in the rearview mirror. The leaves have shown us great color and beauty. They as well will soon yield to old man winter. But wait, not so fast. The Holidays are near and fun with family is dear.
Thanksgiving is a big travel holiday. Just ask me, because I will be in the mountains of NC. Not so much for the turkey and fixin’s, but for family. Around the same time, the big annual event happens again. That’s right…FEZtival of Trees. The many volunteers and helpers make this event feel magical. So much fun to watch the children placing tickets into the candy canes of their favorite tree. Yes of course the Matchbox tree, obviously.
Check the Kora calendar for the all the activities taking place at the Shrine. The Crazy Cops are excited to support and be involved in many of the events. We hope you all can come out take part of the fun and spirit that make the Shrine such a special place.
Seriously, the Crazy Cops wish everyone the best as 2019 draws to an end. Stay safe our friends. See you in 2020.
As much as we hate to pack things up for the year, we have so many other events to look forward to. The fall Ceremonial was a blast, welcoming in new Nobles to Kora Temple. We can’t wait to help with the Feztival of Trees and all the activities happening that week. And we are super excited to be sponsoring a tree at Sunday River and wish all the best of luck to the Oxford County Shrine Club in their endeavors with that event. And of course, the Kora Christmas Party should be a hoot as it always is.
October 26, we had our last shindig of the year at the Fortin compound with games for all ages and a hearty meal and refreshments. Even though we were short one member (we missed

you Joe), we had a blast. Bernie and Jen do such a fine job hosting these get togethers and making us all feel like a part of the family, even going so far as to make sure we all get our daily servings of veggies; I'll take that “Crown and Kale” Jen and drink it too!
2019 was an incredible year. We are thankful to everyone here at Kora Temple who made this such a fun organization and have supported our little unit. We can only hope to bring as much value to Kora as we have received over the last year. Merry Christmas to all and have a wonderful New Year.
FUNSTERS by Adam ‘Simba’ Tanguay, Director
HIGHLANDERS by Chet Matthews, Chief Highlander
Greetings from the Flag Unit. As I write this, it is my sad duty to announce the closure of this proud and long standing unit which was officially folded in August of this year.
On August 6th, five members of the Kora Flag Unit, Units Colonel Bernie McAllister, III. Potentate Richard Hersom and Chief Rabban Gerald “Sonny” Jutras met at the Offshore Restaurant in Rockport. The members voted in favor of splitting the financials 4 ways: The Boston Burns Hospital and the Springfield Hospital, The Kora Shrine Center Building Fund, the Transportation Fund, and The Scholarship Fund.
Through the years, this proud unit supported and promoted Kora Shrine Center, the Masonic Fraternity, Shrinedom, and good fellowship amongst its members. I was sincerely honored to be a part of this group of fine men.
In parting, I want to sincerely thank the remaining 7 members (and their supporting wives) for their unselfish devotion and tireless energy in participating in all the authorized Kora Parades through the years. The 7 members are: Russell Fish, Robert Newbert, Robert Farrington, Louis Metcalf, Frank Mitchell Jr., Lawrence Wildes, and Arthur Kiskila. Peace and Happiness to all of you.
Well it’s the end of another year for the Funsters with only a few events left. The parade season was good, if not as well attended as I would have liked, but in all went well nevertheless. My hope is that next year we can have more participation and more fun, by trying to bring back what the founders of the Funsters used to do.
But until next year, we have our Christmas Party and the Upcoming First Annual Oxford County Shrine Clubs Feztival of Trees in the Jordan Hotel at Sunday River. The Funsters are co-sponsoring the Lottery Tree with the Buccaneers. I hope to see a lot of you up to Sunday River either supporting us through volunteering or just checking it out.
La’ Math (good day) Noble Lads & Lassies, A little Highlander History would seem to be an appropriate
subject for this writing as it’s been forty years since the Highlanders were just a gleam in the eye of a few Nobles.
That’s right! Forty years ago in 1979 a small group of Kora Nobles envisioned putting together a Pipe and Drum Corp. The group, not yet a KORA unit, held their practices on Wednesday nights at the
A Blast from the Past. Anything can Happen at Robbie Burns NightDoooon’t Miss it!
U.S. Army Reserve Center (Armory) in Auburn, Maine. In June of 1981 the groups then Adjutant Russ McCrum wrote to the Kora Executive Committee requesting to be accepted as a KORA unit and in September of that year the Highlanders, still not knowing of their acceptance as a KORA unit, were given permission to perform before the Nobles at the Fall Ceremonial. They were greeted with a warm and loud welcome when they began their performance, a standing ovation when the performance was over, and then Potentate Ralph Hodkins announced that the Highlanders were the newest unit of KORA….And hundreds of performances later, and with tens of thousands of dollars raised to support the Shrines good work we are still going strong!
Along the way the Highlanders while remaining true to the traditions of a Scottish military style pipe and drum corps, and never forgetting that out primary purpose is to spread the word about and support the Shrine's good work, have established a few traditions of our own. The best known is perhaps our Annual Robbie Burns Night extravaganza. This will be the eleventh year we will celebrate this uniquely Scottish remembrance of Robert Burns, the venerated Bard of Scotland’s birthday, with all the traditional pomp and circumstance and food and drink in abundance required of a Robbie Burns Dinner along with what has become our own traditional and not so traditional additions. We are pleased to once again invite Nobles and their families and friends to join us for this fun filled evening which will be held once again at the Martindale Country Club on Saturday February, 1st. See the ad with details of this unique event in this issue of the Sands. We must limit attendance to 100 guests so reserve your place soon.
And after 40 years the Highlanders still meet most Wednesday evenings to practice. Only the place and time have changed since then. Practices are now held at 6:30 PM at the Kora Shrine Center and we invite any Noble who would like to learn more about us to visit us or contact Chief Highlander, Chet Matthews (207) 841-2474, [email protected] or any Highlander.
You just might be a potential Highlander if…The sound of the pipes and thunder of the drums make you stand a little straighter or makes the hair of your neck stand up. Or if… you have always had a secret desire to have intimate knowledge of what’s worn under the kilt. Or you may just be a potential Highlander if… you’d just like to learn something new while helping to support the Shrine and our Hospitals and have a hell of a good time doing it. No musical background? No worries, we will provide lessons.
Until next time, Slainte mhath (good health) and Sealbh math dhuit (good luck).

LOG ROLLERSby Ron Guptill, Scribe
The parade season is over. We had a rough start of the season but we finished strong. Trucks are ready to rest for the winter.
Lots of work to be done in the spring before we start in 2020. We would like to say congratulations to Wayne Whitey and all
the other members of Kora Temple that received their 50 year pin. We had our end of the year party at Arthur Jordans' home on
Oct. 26. We had good weather that day. Last year we had freezing rain so a lot of our members were not able to attend.
We are getting ready to have our tree at the Feztival of Trees. We have some decorations donated from a lady that works with my wife.
Tabs that were dropped off at the Temple from a number of Log Rollers.
CASH CALENDAR CLUBby Cash Calendar Club Members: Bob Doyle, Rob Madore,
Pete Provencher, Carl Pinkham, Ken Goutreau, Gary Robinson
We trust that everyone has enjoyed their summer and fall full of sun, parades, barbeques, family, and friends. During the summer months, we have enjoyed paying out winnings everyday to some great supporters of the Kora Shrine.
It is hard to believe, but we are headed into our fourth year! With your support we have able to pay out almost $30,000 in winnings and we were also able to present checks for donations to The Kora Transportation Fund, The Boston Shriners Hospital, The Springfield Shriners Hospital, and Kora Temple projects in excess of $20,000! We are already planning for the work we can perform with the proceeds from 2020 and are anticipating another successful year.
With that being said we are already ramping up for our 2020 Cash Calendar!! We currently have tickets on sale and we encourage you to visit our Facebook page for more information (www.facebook.com/KoraCashCalendar/). If any Noble wishes to assist in selling tickets, we are offering a free ticket for every 10 tickets sold. Sell 100 tickets and earn yourself 10 chances to win all year long!
So thank you all, please like our Facebook page and feel free to share posts to increase awareness of the Kora Shrine and Shriners International.
KORA KAMPERSby Bonnie Perkins, secretary
Kora Kampers held their fall meeting for 2019 on September 7, 8, and 9 at Bayley’s Camping Resort in Scarborough. We had 42 members in attendance and added 3 new families. We had 3 guests this weekend, David Saphier’s parents and Alan Collins' son, Nathan. Nathan helped with the Chinese auction. David’s mom enjoyed driving David’s golf cart around the camping resort with Lisa Saphier as her co-pilot.
Some members arrived early to relax and visit around and have campfires. On Saturday inclement weather chased us around so the Chinese auction, meeting, and barbeque were moved to the afternoon; evening campfires were rained out. (So, we missed out on our s’mores and mountain pies).
We discussed additional camping trips in summer of 2020.Always looking for new members to join the Kora Kampers –
open to any Shriner in good standing and his immediate family; you do not need a camper as Bayley’s Camping Resort rents campers and cabins. Happy holidays to all!
A proud Grandfather!Tony Perkins, Director
of Kora’s Legion of Honor, and Lady Bonney are the proud grandparents of a star athlete.
Maddie Perkins, a sophomore at Winthrop High School, is leading her field hockey team in scoring, and her goal has been the Junior Olympics.
Winthrop won the State Class C championship last year, with Maddie scoring 39 points and 12 assists. This past summer she was invited to the U16 Futures Championship in Lancaster PA, and was one of 75 players invited to the AAU Junior Olympics in July. “It was definitely a different experience than what I have been doing in my whole life” Maddie said. She was one of two Mainers at the U16 Junior Olympics this year.
Her coach, Jess Merrill, says she knew Maddie was going to be outstanding from her past performances. She has continued to increase her skills by playing “up” with older players during her training sessions. “It’s nice to have that type of skill level that we can use, and have her knowledge on the field”, said Merrill.
Needless to say, Noble Tony and Lady Bonney are extremely proud of Maddie’s accomplishments – and we look forward to hearing about her in the future.

In July of 2019, the Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic celebrated its 30th Anniversary. Many thanks go out to all those who volunteered their time and effort into not only the “premiere high school sporting event in the State of Maine “, but also a very important and successful hospital fundraiser that continues to grow each year. This year’s event, marked by
triple-digit temperatures on the field at Hill Stadium on the grounds of Thornton Academy in Saco, ME, resulted in a final score of 60-14 in favor of the West squad. The score, however, no indication of the tremendous effort put forth by the over 150 selected participants from across the State of Maine, on and off the field.
“Lobster Bowl Week” kicked off on Saturday, July 13th, with the 14th Annual MSLBC Golf Tournament which was held at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro, ME. On Sunday, participants reported to their respective training camps. Foxcroft Academy hosted the football players and coaches while Thomas College hosted the cheering squads. The week was filled with fun activities such as bowling and a beach trip, but also many team building exercises and practice sessions. The annual MSLBC Awards banquet on Friday was hosted by Anah Shrine Temple in Bangor and featured keynote speaker, Mike DeVito, former offensive lineman of University of Maine Black Bears, as well as the NFL’s New York Jets
MAINE SHRINE LOBSTER BOWL CLASSICby Joe Hersom, President MSLBC
and Kansas City Chiefs. All of the week’s hard work and preparation provided a great Game Day on Saturday, and although the score may not have reflected the effort put forth by both squads, the 30th Annual event concluded as a huge success.
“Adversity” was a common theme throughout the week as temperatures were extreme to say the least. The pride and determination of this year’s players, cheerleaders, coaches, and training staffs to make the MSLBC a success was second to none. The MSLBC Board of Governors applauds and offers tremendous kudos to all who assisted in the preparation, collaboration, and execution of participants health and safety efforts throughout the entire week. We would also like to offer a special “Thank You” to following: Thornton Academy, Foxcroft Academy, Thomas College, and Natanis Golf Course, for their hosting and support; Kora and Anah Temple’s Divans, Units, Clubs, and Nobles for the many tasks and duties that are completed and the support they provide each year; Mike Devito for his inspirational and motivational keynote address and support of Shriners Hospitals for Children and the MSLBC; The countless volunteers, sponsors, and contributors who sacrificed their time, money, and energy towards our success; the 2019 participants and coaches, who, because of their effort, affords the 2019 Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic the honor to provide a donation of $50,000.00 to the Shiners Hospitals for Children of Boston and Springfield, MA.
We look forward to 2020 and encourage any Noble who wishes to become a part of this great event to contact [email protected].
