Maybe you remember that last summer Classical 101 launched its first-ever musical instrument drive to benefit school music programs in Columbus…we called it Replay!
Well, it was a tremendous success, so we’re going to play it again. By the time all was said and done, we had
collected 300 instruments so that kids in Columbus would have access to the benefits of a musical education. Music can set a child
on a lifelong journey of discovery, and research shows that those children perform better academically.
In the second year of Replay! we’re hoping to surpass last year’s totals, but we’ll need your help to do it. If you missed the chance to donate, mark it on your calendar…we’ll be collecting from July 16-21, and we’ve expanded our hours of collection and added a Saturday to accommodate everyone’s busy schedules.
You can donate a new or used instrument – we’ll even take strings, mouthpieces and new reeds – to help a young musician who might not otherwise have access to a quality instrument. At this time we’re not able to take donations of sheet music or large instruments like pianos or organs. Drop off instruments at WOSU’s offices in the Fawcett Center the week of July 16-21 to get kids ready for a new school year. Learn more at wosu.org/replay.
And if you did clean out your closets and gave away your dusty trombone, you can still help. Help us spread the word! Mention it to your neighbors, your church choir members, talk it up at the family reunion…get creative! An instrument gathering dust in a closet today can be singing out loud and proud on the football field or orchestra stage by September.
You can help us spread the word by emailing this flyer to your friends, or by printing it out and posting it at your local church, coffee shop, bookstore or other community meeting place.
We’re replaying…REPLAY!

Dog Days of Summer Feature Hot Political News Conventional wisdom says after Memorial Day, political campaigns slow down as voters and supporters tune out and head to the beach. Not this summer. Central Ohio will feature a key race that national political observers are watching. Ohio’s 12th Congressional district seat is empty after Pat Tiberi left to lead the Ohio Business Roundtable, and voters will choose his successor on August 7th.
The gerrymandered district which stretches from Westerville, north to Delaware and east to Zanesville ordinarily favors a Republican candidate, but this is no ordinary time. An open seat
always provides a greater opportunity for a competitive race, but add in Democrats’ passion to thwart President Trump, and the 12th district race looks to be tight.
Republican State Senator Troy Balderson of Zanesville faces Democrat Danny O’Connor, who serves as Franklin County Recorder. Balderson narrowly won the Republican primary in May but has quickly consolidated conservatives behind him. O’Connor easily won his primary, but faces a difficult task attracting votes in the largely rural and conservative district. O’Connor needs to persuade suburban independents and moderate Republicans to turn out and vote for him. Even then, it may not be enough as Balderson showed in the primary he can roll up big margins in Licking and Muskingum Counties.
O’Connor is trying to follow the same path as other Democrats who have won in Republican districts. He vows to expand healthcare and protect Social Security and Medicare while saying he won’t support House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Balderson, endorsed early by Tiberi, touts his conservative credentials, calling for lower taxes and regulation as well as his support for gun rights and opposition to abortion.
89.7 NPR News will provide extensive coverage of the race that is the first contest of a double header. Both candidates face each other again in November.

Classical 101 can also be heard in Columbus on HD Radio 89.7-2 as well as streaming online at wosu.org and on WOSU’s mobile app.
Music in Mid-Ohio Music in Mid-Ohio returns this month, featuring performances from around the area. July features the McConnell Arts Center Chamber Orchestra, the Columbus International Children’s Choir, and the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra and Chorus along with several performances from Chamber Music Columbus. Music ranges from Bach and Schein to Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder, Schubert’s Death and the Maiden Quartet and even a little Irving Berlin. Sundays at 1pm.
Exploring MusicFor the week of July 9, Exploring Music brings you Get the Picture? Listen your way through the works of composers inspired by well-known paintings and poems. Pianist Alicia de Larrocha will perform
Goyescas by Enrique Granados, a musical transcription of Francisco Goya’s paintings. The week’s music includes Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler (Matthias the Painter), and Rachmaninoff’s Isle of the Dead. Art and music are one! Weeknights at 6pm.
Sunday Baroque On July 22, Sunday Baroque delves into musical patrons, who have always played an important role in supporting the arts – and baroque era musicians often relied on royal patrons or the church for their livelihoods. Those composers understood how important it was to butter up their supporters, and they sometimes even dedicated music to those VIPs. Tune in to hear some of their work. Sunday mornings from 6am-10am.
Bernstein Summer Classical 101’s Bernstein Summer continues through the month of July on The American Sound, showcasing performances led by some of Leonard Bernstein’s conducting protégés. Also enjoy Dominick Argento’s steamy Valentino Dances, Michael Torke’s Bright Blue Music and Earl Wild’s ”Doo-Dah” Variations, along with American classics like Gershwin’s An American in Paris and Samuel Barber’s Summer Music. Saturdays at 6pm and Tuesdays at 7pm.
