A LETTER FROM DEACON NICK CHETTA Fr. Beau asked me to write a little about myself, so here goes. I was born in New Orleans and raised in Our Lady of Lourdes parish. This is the parish from which St. Angela Merici received two statues of Our Lady of Lourdes. I was blessed to have Italian Catholic parents with whom I lived, along with my grandfather, next door to my aunt, uncle, and cousins. One of my cousins was the founder and leader of the Original Dukes of Dixieland and my other cousin and uncle, “Papa Jac” also played in the band. With that as a background, I played trumpet at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School, De La Salle High School, and Loyola University. I received the max scholarship possible for a non-music major at Loyola. While in college, I majored in accounting and went through R.O.T.C. In my freshman year, I was coming home from a Christmas party with my family. Our car was struck by a hit and run driver and knocked into a telephone pole, with me being thrown through the windshield and thrown out of the passenger side door. A nurse passing by may have saved my life when she stopped the bleeding. Years later, I was introduced to her, not knowing that her children had gone to St. Angela and De La Salle. God provides. Occasionally, I see her at Mass at St. Angela. As part of the result of the accident, I had a limp with one leg shorter than the other (and still have), however, I was healed of the limp on my first step onto the grounds of Our Lady of Prompt Succor while going to my cousin’s graduation from Ursuline. God heals. Upon graduation from Loyola, I was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army Infantry. I eventually received orders to go to the war in Vietnam where I was seriously wounded by a pellet. The pellet severed my jugular vein and carotid artery. In 1996, I had repair surgery done on my carotid artery. When the doctor asked me when I was wounded, I told him in the summer of 1967, and he told me how lucky I was because the surgery that was performed in Vietnam had not yet even been taught in New Orleans. God provides again. After my recovery from my war wound, I was sent to West Point for a few months in order to train incoming cadets in Vietnam military tactics. I was released from West Point as a First Lieutenant and came back to civilian life. I continued with my education receiving an M.B.A from Loyola and my C.P.A. certification. I went to work with a national C.P.A. firm and then became a partner with a local firm in Metairie. In January of 1971, a friend asked if I would go on a blind date, to which I agreed. When I went to pick up my date, I found myself very attracted to her. A little over eleven months later, my date, Elaine, became my wife. We moved to St. Angela’s parish. Elaine became a teacher. We lived one block over from her sister and her family. A year later, our son, Nick, Jr. , was born and attended St. Angela Merici School with his cousins. He is now married to Nicole and has a daughter, Emerson, who is the joy of our lives. She attended St. Angela Merici School until her parents moved to Madisonville. Elaine and I became members of a charismatic covenant community, The People of Praise, and also became lecturers and extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist at St. Angela. After years of service, I found myself called to the Diaconate program. I returned to serve on the altar from my altar server years at Our Lady of Lourdes when I was ordained a Deacon in the Catholic Church on December of 1993. My Diaconate life has been very rewarding. I prepare young families for the Baptisms of their children. This gives me an opportunity to meet many people. It also gives me the opportunity to perform con-validations (marrying couples in the Catholic Church) for those parents or godparents who have been married civilly. Elaine and I have been involved in marriage preparation and I have served as the principal witness for several weddings, mostly family, including my son’s wedding. I’ve celebrated wakes and burials for the deceased in which I offer my support and shoulder for families to lean on. During two funeral services I have celebrated, I lead the family in a “second line” on Canal Boulevard to the cemetery. I’ve also been able to meet and befriend more good parishioners at St. Angela Merici. I am now retired as a C.P.A. I strive to spend more time with Elaine and serve our parish and our people in anyway I can. May God bless each and everyone of you, Deacon Nick
A reading from the second Book of Kings
One day Elisha came to Shunem, where there was a woman of influence, who urged him to dine with her. Afterward, whenever he passed by, he used to stop there to dine. So she said to her husband, “I know that Elisha is a holy man of God. Since he visits us often, let us arrange a little room on the roof and furnish it for him with a bed, table, chair, and lamp, so that when he comes to us he can stay there.” Sometime later Elisha arrived and stayed in the room overnight.
Later Elisha asked, “Can something be done for her?” His servant Gehazi answered, “Yes! She has no son, and her husband is getting on in years.” Elisha said, “Call her.” When the woman had been called and stood at the door, Elisha promised, “This time next year you will be fondling a baby son.”
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

LITURGY FOR THE 13TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
R. (2a) For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.
The promises of the LORD I will sing forever,
through all generations my mouth shall proclaim your faithfulness.
For you have said, “My kindness is established forever;”
in heaven you have confirmed your faithfulness.
R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.
Blessed the people who know the joyful shout;
in the light of your countenance, O LORD, they walk.
At your name they rejoice all the day,
and through your justice they are exalted.
R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.
You are the splendor of their strength,
and by your favor our horn is exalted.
For to the LORD belongs our shield,
and the Holy One of Israel, our king.
R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans
Brothers and sisters: Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life. If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. We know that Christ, raised from the dead, dies no more; death no longer has power over him. As to his death, he died to sin once and for all; as to his life, he lives for God. Consequently, you too must think of yourselves as dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Second Reading Romans 6:3-4, 8-11
The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord.
Jesus said to his apostles: “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. "Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because the little one is a disciple— amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Gospel Reading Matthew 10:37-42
R. Alleluia, alleluia. You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation; announce the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Pro-Life Ministry Join St. Angela Pro-Life Ministry at the Abortion facility on General Pershing St. for a prayerful presence on July 9th. We will leave after 8:30 am mass. The deeper value of being outside of the abortion facility is that it is a place of such despair and hopelessness. It is a place where God is most urgently needed. Praying outside is bringing God to the facility. Sometimes that presence is enough to be a sign of hope to somebody entering the facility. Please consider joining us.
FAITH FORMATION

Saint of the Week SAINT JUNÍPERO SERRA (1713-1784) Feast Day: July 1 No one who has stood before the quiet majesty of Mission San Juan Capistrano, or the altogether different but no less lovely Mission Dolores in San Francisco, or any of the missions from San Diego to Sonoma can fail to bless the Franciscan padre who, while not founder of each, was inspiration for them all, Saint Junípero Serra. Abandoning the comfortable academic life to which his doctorate in theology entitled him, Serra journeyed to the New World where his tireless traveling, dramatic preaching, and penitential austerity converted thousands of native peoples. Saving souls and celebrating the sacraments were Padre Serra’s primary mission but not his only one. Education in letters and crafts, trades and agriculture transformed the people, while roads and irrigation systems transfigured the landscape. His more than thirty years of ministry were not free from conflict with authorities or without controversy in the retrospectively critical eye of history. But when John Paul II beatified him in 1988, he praised Padre Serra for assisting his converts to use their new faith to advance their true human development. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Out of compliance with the precautions regarding COVID-19, Catholic Counseling Service (CCS) continues to offer telehealth services to individuals, couples, and families through the phone or video-conferencing platforms. This new and effective method of counseling allows CCS to extend our services across the archdiocese to areas we weren’t previously available. Beginning Monday, May 18th, we will resume our face-to-face counseling at our New Orleans office; however, staff and clients are required to take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of all, including wearing facemasks and maintaining 6 feet apart where possible. Through the generosity of a donor, CCS has received a grant to increase the number of clients we can assist with the cost of counseling, including providing pro bono services when necessary. CCS offers counseling for $50 a session and will continue to use a sliding scale to assist anyone looking for counseling. We are committed to removing finances as an obstacle to mental health services. Anyone interested in counseling can speak to our intake coordinator by calling our main office at 504-861-6245. If we are unable to answer a call, please leave a message with their name and preferred contact phone number and someone will return their call within the next business day to complete the intake and schedule an appointment. All calls are completely confidential. We are proud to continue our mission of providing quality and affordable counseling to the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
