Seventh Sunday of Easter June 2, 2019

MALLIA'S MOMENTS
by Fr. Joe Mallia
Next week we will all share in the joy of celebrating
Pentecost. But more than sharing in the mass, we need to
be praying for an experience of the actual event. Simply
put, we need the Holy Spirit! I can not stress enough how
important it is that we open our minds and hearts to the
working of the Holy Spirit in our lives and invite God to use
us in the way he used the Apostles in the early Church.
Recently, we held a parish wide gathering to talk about
the challenges we face and the path forward. There was a
fairly good-sized crowd, but small considering we have over
1700 families between the two parishes. By any standard,
that would be a huge Protestant church or even a mega
non-denominational church. The problem we face is not
that we don’t have enough people, the problem is that we
are not moved by the Holy Spirit. Like the Apostles, we are
locked away in our own little rooms by the fear which keeps
us from fully expressing or living out our faith. We are even
hesitant to make the sign of the cross and say grace in
public, even though athletes prominently make the sign of
the cross at sporting events. If we struggle to do the little
things, how are we going to do the big things? That is why
we need the Holy Spirit.
At the meeting, I tried to lay out the reasons why we must
begin the process of looking at how it is we run our parishes
and the challenges we face. The first problem we have is
that we have designed our parishes to be focused on
priests. Most people who are active in the parish see their
efforts as “helping out Father.” That is not a proper
response. Priests are here to provide sacraments and to
guide the people of God in their journey of faith. The parish
does not belong to the priest, it belongs to you.
Every person when baptized was anointed with Chrism
as a Priest, Prophet and King. Ministry flows from baptism
and not from ordination. You are all called to serve. If you
are waiting for priests to do everything, you are going to be
waiting a long time and the future does not look hopeful.
Simply put, in the next nine years, 80 priests in our diocese
will be eligible to retire. That is above and beyond the
already 23 priests who are serving as pastors who are over
the age of retirement (70). If we continue to make this
about what “Father wants”, we might as well close the
doors.
You are the real driving force of the parish! Your
presence, your work, your efforts, your faith, your sacrifice,
your commitment must be the life blood of the parish. From
the very beginning I have told you that I am here to serve
you and work with you in helping you become the parish you
want to be. I made no pretense expecting that you should
adjust to my style but that I would adjust to you and guide
you to make sure that what was done was in line with the
teachings of the Catholic Church.
During the meeting I gave the example of a pyramid as a
model of the church. Unfortunately, the pyramid has been
focused on the many serving the few. You have the large
number of people directing all their efforts towards the
direction of the eventual focus, the pastor. That pyramid
needs to be turned on its head. The pastor is there to
support and guide the lay leadership, who then call forth the
gifts of other lay members of the community, who are then
empowered to go forth to serve the greater community. If
we maintain the pyramid as it presently sits with the pastor
on top, we will end up collapsing on ourselves and dying.
But if the pyramid is inverted, the flow of effort flows out and
it becomes life giving to all.
Beyond the shortage of priests, who are already being
asked to serve multiple parishes, we have an aging
population. With birth rates dropping everywhere, the world
as a whole is getting older. By 2035, the United States will
have 78 million people over the age of 65 and only 76.4
million under the age of 18. The situation in many countries
in the world is worse, especially in Eastern Europe and
places like Japan and Singapore. In our own state,
according to the government populations reports, we have
2,231,000 children from ages 0-18 for 23% of our
population. There are 2,462,600 or 25% of the population
between the ages of 35-54. If you include the population
that is older than 54, you now have a total which represents
56% of the total population.
The challenges we face are diverse. We must consider
an aging and shrinking population, the rise in technology,
the various needs of the people we minister to, the lack of a
religious society, the poorly religiously educated populous
across the spectrum and the economic conditions of the
area in which we live.
But challenges are no reason to have fear. Throughout
the evening, we turned to Scripture for guidance. We read
from Lamentations and from Nehemiah. We prayed with
Exodus 14:12 which reminded us not to think that the past is
better than the future and we concluded with the words of
encouragement given to us by St. Paul in Romans 16:17-20
and 2 Cor 13: 5-8. The Word of God provides us proper
direction because at this point in the life of the Church, we

MALLIA’S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1
have more in common with the time of the Apostles than we
do with the church of 1950 for example. The early church
faced the same problems. They had few Apostles, little
resources, a mission given to them by Jesus to go out to
the whole world and no idea of how to proceed – sound
familiar? It does to me too. That is why God sent them the
Holy Spirit and why we need to ask God how to guide us
too.
I believe the future is bright if we approach this process in
faith and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. I am asking
all of us to pray for our parishes, for our lay leadership, our
parish staff and most undeservedly, myself. I am calling on
more people to step up and volunteer to be part of the
parish councils. I would like to get the number of members
up to 15 per council.
I want to reiterate that this is not a process that will lead
us to shrinking our efforts, but increasing our efforts. This is
a process that seeks growth and expansion and not
reduction. We must create a parish structure that is lay
focused and driven under the guidance of a priest who
provides proper spiritual guidance. I see great work on the
horizon, but like always, it will depend on you. I told those
who attended, we have two options. We can bury our head
in the sand and pretend things will get better on their own or
we can address the issues, chart a course forward and
make the efforts to create a better tomorrow. The pivotal
question remains, do we believe that the Good News of
Jesus Christ is worth proclaiming to the world or not? If the
mission given to us by Jesus himself, to bring the Good
News to the world, is worthy, then we have to move
forward.
If this is your parish, if this is your community, then the
responsibility for it is on you. The future of what we will be,
begins today and it begins with all of us doing more than
what we have done. We must build the future on the
accomplishments of the past and with a hope for a better
future.
I will keep all of you informed as we move forward.
There will be another parish gathering in September. We
are in need now of people to step forward and submit
their names for consideration for the Parish Council
that will be drawn on Pentecost Sunday. Most
importantly we are in need of your prayers. Thank you and
God bless.
School registration:
Some of the grades are filling up, especially Pre-school.
If you are interested in being a part of our school next year,
you need to get your registration in soon. Take advantage
of the $1,200 first year tuition for grades K-8.
Vacation Bible School:
Spaces are filling up quickly and
we have to limit the size of the group
as a result. If you want your child to
be a part of this years VBS, please
sign up today. Thank you.
Kickball:
We already have four teams that are or will soon be
formed. If you are interested in playing, you can join as a
team or a single member and we will put you on a team.
The games are played on Wednesday night (weather
permitting) on the softball diamond at Memphis High
School starting at 7:00 p.m. The average game takes
about 40 minutes. If possible, we will try to have each
team play twice per night to make it worth the trip and add
to the fun of round robin play. Hope to see a few more
teams this year. Please email me with your team
members or your interest to be placed on a team. Thank
you. Remember, the age limit is senior in high school and
up.
Walk with Jesus:
The pilgrimage walk is coming up. Volunteers are
needed to help carry the Blessed Sacrament during the
walk. Please sign up at church.
Holy Family Parish Celebration:
June 15-16 is right around the corner and I want to
extend to you my hope that you will come and share some
fun with each other this weekend. No matter which parish
you are registered at, I want to express my desire that we
do our best to celebrate our time with each other. I
especially want to reach out to those who don’t come to
such events. Simply put, its time you do.
Saturday night there will be a great dinner and fun
entertainment. It’s $25 a person and I hope we fill the tent
this year. We all need a good time considering the
weather we have had. On Sunday, there will be mass
outside and then a free-will offering lunch and free games
and raffles for the kids, Bingo for the adults and a DJ under
the tent. Please make plans to be there and please return
the raffle tickets before that date to be included in the
drawing. Hope to see you all there.
Attention all alumni of Michigan Tech and St. Albert
the Great Parish:
On July 24
th
there will be a cookout/potluck here in
Richmond for alumni and their families. If you are a
graduate of Michigan Tech or know someone who is,
please let them know of this event. You can get more

Intentions
Looking for a way to get
involved with the Festival?
Consider working behind the
scenes as a chairperson:
Volunteer Chair – Setup and manage
the SignUp Genius online volunteer
scheduling (the 2019 schedule is
already setup); Help sign up
volunteers who do not utilize the
internet. Someone will assist you this
year and into the next to make the
transition to chair easy.
Entertainment Chair– Arrange and
follow up all festival entertainment that
would be held under the beverage
tent. Entertainment is set for 2019 but
we would like someone to take over
now so that we can make the
transition to chair easy.
Festival yard signs Chair – 60 Small
yard signs-prepare, hand out signs to
parishioners and collect after festival.
Seven Large yard signs-prepare and
set up signs at designated spots.
Obtain sign permits from
municipalities. Three daily event
signs- set these signs up on the
Monday of festival week. Someone
will assist you this year to make the
transition to chair easy.
Outside Setup Chair- in charge of
obtaining contracts for the tents,
tables, chairs, dance floor, bars, port-a
-johns (the 2019 contracts are already
set) and oversee their deliveries; make
arrangements to get picnic tables from
the Good Old Days and the stage from
Holy Family. Oversee the setup with
parishioners on set up night.
Someone will assist you this year and
into the next and explain the complete
set up process to you so that the
transition to chairperson is easy.

St. Augustine Festival Volunteer Information
We have decided to keep the volunteer sign up this year
online only as it proved to be very beneficial. However,
it was too difficult to keep the signup board in church and
the online signup in sync with each other last year. So,
there will not be a signup board in the church this year.
There will be two ways for you to sign up online:
Visit our website www.staugustinecatholicparish.org,
click on “Parish Festival” at the top, then click on
“For Parishioners” in the left column. Scroll
down to “Volunteers” where you will find
instructions, a link to a printable version of the
list of volunteer descriptions and time slots, and
a link to our Sign-Up Genius page. If you are
already familiar with Sign up Genius, simply go
to www.tinyurl.com/stafestival2019 to sign up
If you do not utilize the internet, we will be
available after all masses on Saturday, June 8
th
and Sunday, June 9
th
to help you with the online
signup. Future sign up dates will be published in
the bulletin.
A flyer with all the descriptions and time slots will be in
the bulletin several times for you to review. You can
also visit our website as indicated above to print one off.
If you have any questions, please call Cindy Manchik at

I cannot believe that we are wrapping up the
second year of our Transitional Kindergarten
program this year! I am enjoying teaching this
class as I watch my students grow academically,
socially, and in their faith. With such amazing
preschool and kindergarten programs, I am so
grateful to be teaching this new program that is
such a wonderful steppingstone from preschool to
kindergarten.
As part of our end of the year activities, the
students are now each filling out a memory book
that asks questions about things like their favorite
book we read, favorite part of the day, and what
they learned. It seems the more years I teach the
quicker the years fly by, so it is one of my favorite
things to do with the kids - to stroll down memory
lane! It is amazing to hear in their own words what
they remember and what has made the biggest
impact on them. There were comments about our
science experiments, learning about animals, writing
numbers, learning about patterns, listening to our
religion songs, free choice, and playing soccer
outside.
I am blessed to have had another successful year
in TK with such a smart, funny, and creative class
with many more to come I am sure! I love seeing
how they show such confidence and can’t wait to
see them soar in kindergarten and beyond.
