Judge William H. Wolff, Jr. retiring

Twenty nine judges will retire byearly this year. Among them is JudgeWilliam H. Wolff Jr., who will retirefrom the Second District Court ofAppeals on Jan. 31. He has said hewon’t ride off into the sunset just yetwith plans to try mediation and arbi-tration work. He’s also open toaccepting assignments to trial andappellate courts. As for his othernumerous interests, Judge Wolff saidhe’ll have more time to devote to flyfishing, skiing, hiking, cooking, gar-dening and out-of-state children andgrandchildren.

Just like Judge Wolff, More thanhalf of the retiring judges served onthe bench for at least 20 years, eitherin their current posts or in combina-tion with past service as municipalcourt judges. Their successors wereall chosen in the Nov. 4 election.

Judge Wolff offered this advice tonew judges: “I suggest you workhard, don’t forget what it’s like to bea practicing lawyer, don’t take your-self too seriously, and strive forexcellence, not perfection.Excellence is expected and attain-

able; perfection is not.” He praisedhis successor, Judge Jeffrey Froelich,as a distinguished trial judge whoenjoys the respect and confidence ofthe judges he will join. He said hehas no doubt that Judge Froelich willmake a seamless and effortless tran-sition to the court of appeals.

A member of the appeals courtsince 1985, Judge Wolff also praisedhis colleagues, also praised his col-leagues, past and present, on thecourt of appeals. “I couldn’t havehand-picked better people to workwith.”

“I have truly enjoyed the work ofjudging,” Judge Wolff said. “I havecountless fond memories of the peo-ple I’ve met and worked with overthe years, first as a trial judge andmore recently as an appellate judge.I have been blessed with outstandingstaff attorneys and with solid staffsupport. I have, for the most part, enjoyed a good working relationshipwith the bar. I found that if I respect-ed the job the lawyers had to do, thelawyers respected the job I had todo.”
