Snow heroHOMAS Tapley, aged six, has received a certificate from
Chesterfield’s Mayor, Coun Alexis Diouf, after clearing around 30
metres of snow and ice.
Thomas, who lives in Croydon, was visiting his grandad, Albert Hardy, in
New Whittington, Chesterfield, during the winter’s heaviest snowfalls in
December.
He decided he wanted to do his bit to make it easier for local people to get
around.
Thomas said: “It was really hard work to move the ice and put grit down. My
gloves were all wet, so I had to use socks as gloves.
“I felt very happy when I had finished because it meant people would not slip
and fall over and my grandad was able to go down to the shop.”

Gathering steamThe Chesterfield area’s veryown railway attraction isbidding for a Heritage LotteryGrant to help improve facilities
OLUNTEERS at Barrow Hill Roundhouse have been given
a Springtime boost by making it through the first stage of a
bid for £100,000 of Heritage Lottery Funding to preserve the
site as a national railway treasure.
The Roundhouse is the last surviving one of its kind in the UK with an
operational turntable. Built in 1870, it was threatened with demolition in
1991 when the site was closed by British Rail. It was saved by a group
of dedicated volunteers who have transformed it into a premier railway
venue.
The attraction is connected to the national railway network and this
has encouraged several commercial rail companies to base their
activities at Barrow Hill, generating more than 40 jobs and making a
valuable contribution to the local economy.
The next big event at Barrow Hill is a Diesel ‘Rarities’ Weekend on
April 18th and 19th.

HESTERFIELD’S Queen’s Park will
once again be in the media spotlight
when international cricket returns to
the town in an Ashes summer when
England U19s face Australia U19s in the
second of five one-day internationals in
August. The match is to be played on Friday, 14th
August, and is a chance for supporters to
watch the England and Australia stars of the
future, including a potential appearance from
Derbyshire fast-bowler Will Davis who was
recently selected for the U19s tour of
Australia.
The match will bring a second helping of
high quality action for the Chesterfield public
following Derbyshire County Cricket Club’s
annual Festival of Cricket, in association with
Chesterfield Borough Council. This will be
held in July and includes LV=County
Championship action against Glamorgan and
NatWest T20 Blast fixtures versus
Northamptonshire Steelbacks and Yorkshire
Vikings.
Chesterfield Cricket Club Chairman Mike
Taylor said: “We are looking forward to
another great summer of cricket here in
Queen’s Park.
“In July, we will host Derbyshire County
Cricket Club’s Festival of Cricket and it’s
great that we’ll bring the curtain down with an
Ashes battle between the best young players
in England and Australia.
“Hosting both these high profile events is
great news for the town and also great news
for Chesterfield Cricket Club. Watching some
of the best players around always inspires
our youngsters at the Club and local schools
and these big matches provide us with
opportunities for us to raise funds which help
us continue to run a very successful league
cricket club.
“We’re proud to host Derbyshire‘s Festival
of Cricket and hope the Festival will continue
for many years. It’s been great to host
additional matches in recent summers like
the England Women, Yorkshire versus the
Unicorns and now the England and Australia
U19s.”
Entry for the international match will be free
of charge, beginning at 10.30am.
Big year ahead for TomNot only has he become a published author,Chesterfield’s Tom Hardwick has also beeninvited to spend seven weeks in America
LOCAL man who has a muscle-wasting disease has an
exciting summer ahead of him after writing a book about
his life.Tom Hardwick, 23, of Loundsley Green, has Duchenne muscular
dystrophy, which means he uses a wheelchair and needs 24-hour care.
Research for his autobiography ‘Not Wasted’ has led to him being
offered an internship with a charity in the United States.
Churches in the area are backing Tom in his efforts to raise more
than £10,000 to cover the cost of his flight, accommodation and
specialist equipment he will need. Tom became a Christian when he
was 13 and went on to obtain a degree in theology.
Tom’s carer, dad Ian, will be accompanying him on the seven-week
trip to California and it’s hoped his costs can be covered too.
Tom’s internship is with a global mission run by charity Joni and
Friends, called Cause 4 Life, which supports disabled people and their
families.
Tom hopes to learn how he can prepare to become, and help others
to become, a voice for disabled people in his home area and
particularly within the church.
He said: “The most important part of travelling to America and being
an intern with Joni and Friends, in my view, is to have an opportunity to
show kindness and compassion to people who, like me, are affected by
disability and to be an encouragement to them.
“It’s really important to me to value others above myself and this
internship is a fantastic platform to do that.
“I hope that whilst over there I would grow in confidence and gain
new insights into the challenges people with disabilities face so that I
may be better equipped to be a voice for them.
“Another reason I chose to take part in the internship is because I
wanted to do something totally outside of my comfort zone. I can very
easily find myself allowing my disability to dictate my life by thinking I
cannot do certain things and because of it not trying.
“It will be a fantastic achievement for me to go on a 13-hour flight to
another continent and then spend seven weeks there; this is something
that I would never have imagined doing. I hope this experience will
loosen a few inhibitions and help me to flourish.”
Tom was diagnosed with the disease, which only affects boys, aged
five. Life expectancy is 19 years so Tom is doing very well.
He is aiming to stage five events in the region over the next few
months to share his plans, promote his book and raise money. The first
was held at the church he attends - Holmebrook Valley Church.
Local businesses are also being asked to support Tom’s campaign.
He has a give.net site set up and hosted by his church, a registered
charity, which can be found at: https://my.give.net/notwasted
His book is available on Amazon as a Kindle version and through

ROOM above a Chesterfield hairdressing salon was the
venue for a major turning point in the career of singer Joe
Cocker. The latest issue of Twist’s sister magazine, My Kind of Town, includes
a tribute to the late, great rock and blues performer... and there is a
fascinating revelation about how he made one of the most important
recordings of his career at an unlikely local address.
David McPhie, who worked as Joe’s personal advisor and morale-
booster in the 1960s, recalls that the performer’s confidence was
at a particularly low ebb following one gig at Barrow Hill.
Recalled David: “He became very depressed, being faced with
sparse future bookings, even from his management, and no
prospect of anything recording-wise on the horizon. He told me
that if things didn’t improve radically in the next few weeks, he was
going to disband the group and return to his former employment as
a gas fitter.”
David told him that, one way or another, he would get him a new
recording contract, and the first step would be to make a demo
recording to hawk around the major labels in London.
“So we arranged a day at our rented upstairs flat, above the
hairdressers on the corner of Chatsworth Road and School Board
Lane in Chesterfield.
“It was recorded on one of those old, chunky, reel-to-reel tape-
recorders (a Ferrograph, I think), on Scotch tape, with a
rudimentary mixer and a couple of microphones. In addition to
vocals, Joe played drums with my own set being on hand, and
Chris Stainton played everything else: guitar, bass, electric
keyboard.”
Songs recorded included the recently Cocker/Stainton-penned
‘Marjorine’ which went on to become Joe’s first chart hit.
Added David: “My copy of this recording was later 'irretrievably
degraded' and rendered unplayable by being stored in the damp
cellar of the next house we moved to. What would that recording
be worth now, I wonder?”
The remarkable career of Joe Cocker, who died in December, is
remembered in an eight-page tribute in Issue 16 of nostalgia
publication ‘My Kind of Town’, on sale, price £4.99, from
Waterstones in Chesterfield and from the publishers on 01246
380016 (post free).

speak. Teenagers at Tupton
Hall School have
resurrected an ancient form
of communication - Latin.Students in the sixth form have
been attending Latin Club in
their spare time and some will
sit a GCSE in the subject this
summer.
Even though Latin is no longer spoken, it’s shaped many European
languages and Tupton Hall pupils are finding that a grasp of Latin
grammar can help them master other languages and enrich their use
and understanding of English.
Katharine Waring, 17, who wants to study archaeology in the future,
said: “I'm enjoying learning Latin. It's a very logical language with all
the rules set out. The hard bit is remembering all the tenses.
“I can see how closely English and the European languages
are linked to it. I like being able to see where our word meanings
come from. Like ‘January’ which stems from the Latin ‘ianua’
which means ‘door’.”
English teacher Alison Carter set up the group to give students a
slightly different academic challenge. They have been learning some
key grammar points and reading stories about Roman life, history
and culture.
Said Alison: “The students are really enjoying Latin. They are
sparky and able to use their knowledge of English and other
languages to fill in gaps or guess new words.
“There is a fun, relaxed atmosphere in the class and a great
combination of enthusiasm, intelligence and good humour.”

Organisers of a reunion for former pupils of one of the area’s largest schools are turning back the clock 40 years
O you recognise yourself in this great old picture? If so,
your former schoolmates want to hear from you!A reunion is being held for pupils who were in the 5th form at Tupton
Hall School in 1975. Some of the group are pictured here in the lower
sixth.
The last time the classmates had a reunion was back in 1997 at the
Hunloke Arms, Wingerworth.
Another meet-up is planned for 13th June at the same venue, now
the Wingerworth Pub & Kitchen.
John Tucker, who is helping to arrange the event, said organisers
hoped former staff would also be able to attend.
He said: “If it’s anything like the last one, it will be a great night.
People came from as far afield as California.
“If anyone has any old photos, we’d like them to please bring them
along.”
Anyone planning to attend should email ths.reunion1975@hotmail.

w st Chesterfield’s Award-Winning MagazineTHello, my name is...
HESTERFIELD Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is
going back to basics.
The hospital’s 3,500 staff are supporting a national campaign that
reminds everyone in the NHS that compassionate care starts by
saying “hello” properly to patients.
Created by Dr Kate Granger, a young, terminally ill, hospital
consultant from Yorkshire, the ‘Hello my name is...’ campaign aims
to improve patient experience - in the UK and across the world.
The idea is simple – every member of staff is asked to show they
care by introducing themselves to patients, whether they are
treating them in clinic, looking after them on a ward, helping them
find their way around or bringing them a cup of tea.
A video featuring several members of the Royal’s staff who are
championing the cause can be seen on video sharing website
YouTube.
Director of Nursing and Patient Care at the Royal, Lynn Andrews
said: “‘Hello my name is…’ fits so well with our own Proud to Care
values. Introducing yourself to patients is kind and compassionate –
it shows you care, it connects you, it helps put patients at ease -
and it starts to build trust.
“We are delighted to support the national campaign and feedback
from patients across the country shows that introductions are vital -
the smallest things really do make the biggest difference.”

Meditation involves concentrating single-pointedly on a meaningful
object to make the mind progressively more peaceful.
The event is being held by charity-run meditation centres in Matlock
Bath and Buxton which organise classes, courses and workshops
suitable for everyone from any walk of life.
The event will be held at Chesterfield Central Library, New Beetwell
Street, on 14th April, from 6.30-8.30pm. The event is free but

Decade of PCSOsERBYSHIRE Constabulary is set to commemorate a
decade since the introduction of police community support
officers across the county. Just 43 PCSOs started out on the beat, now there are hundreds
making up more than 90 Safer Neighbourhood teams.
Their key role is to provide high visibility patrols and reassurance in
the community, working with residents and partner agencies to solve
neighbourhood concerns, including issues such as anti-social
behaviour, vandalism and nuisance drivers.

Welcome back! When it comes to eating out in the town centre, there is something new - yet strangelyfamiliar - down Corporation Street. Deborah Wain reports
OU can be forgiven for looking twice when
you step into the stylish new addition to
Chesterfield’s evening food scene – Habanero
Grill, in Corporation Street. For offering a warm welcome is manager Cesare
Viracca who last year was supposed to have retired
from the business after running the popular Santiago
restaurant at Whittington Moor for over 20 years.
It says a lot about the potential of the Habanero Grill
that Cesare, who came to the UK from Chile in 1974,
was persuaded to start a new venture after hanging
up his waistcoat.
And, within weeks of opening, word has got around
about the new place with diners attracted by its
whitewashed interior and lively salsa music - and its
food, of course.
As Cesare points out, there are no other restaurants
in the area specialising in authentic Latin American
and Mexican cuisine and the location is just perfect,
surrounded by bars and close to Chesterfield’s
theatres.
Colleague Mike Firth and I called in after work one
evening and we were instantly transported to warmer,
colourful climes.
The restaurant, a former late bar, is bigger than it
looks from the outside and offers 70 covers in total.
However, because it has a series of interconnecting
rooms, you can find the right set-up for any style of
evening – from tucked-away tables for two to a back
room ideal for a large group.
You can take your own wine on Tuesdays,
Wednesdays and Thursdays, which is an added
bonus.
It’s also worth mentioning that there is an entire
upper floor with its own small bar for private parties
where guests can enjoy a hot and cold buffet.
Cesare has seen plenty of changes in the tastes of
the people of Chesterfield and reports that people are
getting more adventurous with what they order.
Head chef Simon Sewell has worked in kitchens all
over the world, including in Hollywood where he
cooked for people like Barbra Streisand and Rod
Stewart. He’s created a menu offering a wide choice,
whether you want to go for a flame-grilled steak or
something more exotic. You can turn up the heat if
you want – after all the Habanero takes its name from
a small, but fiery, chilli!
Mike and I both opted for Mexican favourites. Mike
chose a Grande Chimichanga (£13.50) – a fried
tortilla parcel stuffed with succulent, tasty chicken,
chorizo, chilli and cheese.
I went meat-free with the Fajitas Monterray (£11.90)
– stir-fried fresh chilli-marinated vegetables on a
sizzling platter with soft, warm flour tortillas.
Both our dishes were served with salsa, salad, sour
cream and chips (the potato variety rather than corn
chips) so they were hearty portions but we happily
polished off the lot. In fact, it was one of those
courses that you wanted to keep on eating.
When it came to dessert, Mike and I already had our
eyes on the Churros (£3.60) so, when three women
on the table next to ours all emphatically placed an
order for these, our decision was made. They
appeared to have dined at Habanero Grill before!
If you haven’t had churros, they are a slim, sweet
sugar-dusted fritter and, in my opinion, even yummier
than a doughnut because they’re served piping hot. At
Habanero Grill, they come with a hot chocolate
dipping sauce. All in all, simple but absolutely
delicious.
Habanero Grill is open Tuesday to Saturday, from
6pm, although opening hours could be extended in
the future. Buen Provecho - enjoy your meal!

HRIS Radford relaunched Brampton
Brewery in 2007 and produces
award-winning ales from its site at
Chatsworth Road Business Park – just
200 yards from where the original
operation is thought to have been based
almost two centuries ago. His brewery has a couple of nearby pubs,
The Rose & Crown and The Tramway
How much of a pedigree does Chesterfield have as abrewing town?It has a fabulous pedigree. A hundred years
ago there were three sizeable breweries
operating in Chesterfield – Scarsdale,
Chesterfield and Brampton – doing well,
winning awards and selling lots of beer.
Naturally, our interest is in Brampton whose
origins can be traced back to 1822, but which
in itself has such a rich and varied history.
What's the most unusual beeryou've sampled?I’ve struggled with a banana beer, primarily
because usually a banana tone in a beer
indicates an ester off-flavour, so why anyone
would purposefully brew with it is beyond me.
But I’d have to go for a Rauchbier (smoke
beer) brewed by Schlenkerla of Germany. I’ve
had smoked Porters before that have been
lovely, but the original Schlenkerla is so
heavily smoked it’s like drinking an ash-tray.
How do you pull a perfectpint? That really depends if you live north of, say,
Watford, or not!
Usually, up here you’d make sure there was
a sparkler on the pump, put it right to the
bottom of the glass and leave it there.
Four firm, but not aggressive, pulls on the
hand-pump should leave you with a tight,
creamy head and a pint that settles crystal
clear.
What provides the inspirationfor the naming of your beers?Generally speaking, inspiration comes from
the original Brampton Brewery and local
history.
What's the most memorablelocation in which you'veenjoyed a pint?I’d have to go for my honeymoon; we went
skiing to a beautiful little town in the Colorado
Rockies, called Steamboat. It was half way up
a mountain, looking down across snow-
covered slopes that gently fell away to the
picture-postcard mid-western town in the
valley below.
Which beer from the pastwould you like to see back on sale? The original Brampton Mild. It had such a big
following and was probably the most
renowned of all the beers brewed locally.
What are your other passionsin life?First and foremost, my family. My wife, Julia,
and I have been blessed with two beautiful
boys aged eight and six, and I don’t get to
spend nearly as much time with any of them
as I would like.
I’m also a massive Spireite so enjoy relaxing
at the match on a weekend (with a pint of
Golden Bud at half-time, of course!)
Describe yourself in threewords.Obsessive, Considerate, Restless
Favourite line from a movie?“If you build it, they will come” – from ‘Field of
Dreams’. I swear I heard the same whisper
when we set the brewery up!
What did you have forbreakfast today?Tea and toast.
